From its publication in 2005, "California Native Plants for the Garden" has been a horticultural best seller and is now in its tenth printing. The authors Carol Bornstein, Bart O'Brien and David Fross have always wanted to add to the over 525 plants covered in that book. In this presentation Carol and Bart reveal some of their favorite native plants that didn't make the book's final cut.
Bart O'Brien, president of Cal Hort, is one of California’s leading experts in native plant horticulture. Bart’s impact is felt statewide. A long-time member and former president of the CNPS Santa Clara Valley Chapter, he is the current director of the the Regional Parks Botanic Garden in Berkeley. Before that, he served as the director of special projects for Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, during which time the Southern California Horticultural Society named him the 2005 Horticulturist of the Year. While in Southern California, Bart also developed an interest in the botany of Baja California and continues to serve as a board member for Terra Peninsular. Among his many accomplishments, he is credited with compiling a list of more than 7,000 California native cultivars, helping to save the Edgewood Park serpentine grasslands, and co-authoring multiple books, including Care and Maintenance of Southern California Gardens.
Carol Bornstein is one of Southern California's most highly respected native plant specialists. She just recently retired as Director of the Nature Gardens at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, where for more than 8 years she oversaw the long-term care and development of this 3.5-acre habitat for urban wildlife and the museum's live animal program. For nearly 30 years, she was horticulturist at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Carol co-authored two books, the national award-winning "California Native Plants for the Garden" and "Re-imagining the California Lawn: Water-conserving Plants, Practices, and Designs", both of which champion the benefits of designing gardens in harmony with nature. She continues to advocate for sustainable, regionally appropriate landscaping and to share her knowledge of plants native to California and other mediterranean and dry-climate regions through her writing, teaching, and design work.
