Meanwhile, these and other "progressive" decisions exacerbate inflationary pressure by increasing distribution costs for every good and service. Let the market dictate these sorts of evolvement. Trying to force this when the technology is not ready from both an economic standpoint and practicality standpoint is just not wise. My company is experimenting with a few electric trucks. They said the range for the trucks was advertised as 350 miles per charge, but in practice with a heavy load, it is less than half of that. They are already spending a ton on tow bills, and are afraid to send them into LA or bay area traffic.

I remember in the 80’s and 90’s California kids audibly scoffing at people from other states because they were the cool kids. Times have changed. Specifically, one foreign exchange student spoke to my class. When he mentioned he lived with a family in Missouri, the students in my class chuckled. The consensus was “this guy came all of the way to America to live in Missouri? What a waste.”

My parents both grew up in Whittier and Norwalk. My mother remembers riding horses from Whittier to Huntington Beach on vacant plots of land. She and her boyfriend would hitch up their Horst the hitching post down there and spend the day at the beach before riding home. I grew up in the Antelope Valley area. A small unincorporated country area out there that is a little bit nicer than the rest of the valley. My family has seen a lot of changes over the three generations. California’s slide has been a living example of the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I grew up mainly in Bellflower ca in the 60’s and 70’s. Lived in so cal most of my life. I laugh when I hear people talk about how polluted the air is, having lived through countless smog alerts throughout my childhood. A statistical comparison between air quality then and now isn’t even close. But what really has changed in California over that period is that the government is no longer interested in serving its constituents. What it does now is leverage it’s citizens good ( but Ill informed) intentions to further its political ideology. It has been a one party state for over thirty years now and the decline in livability and the wastefulness and corruption of the state government you see is a result of that.

So, they make these things called batteries which can store electricity. You can get them as small as a coin cell or as big as a shipping container. One Tesla Mega Pack could keep a hospital running for days. If you put solar on the roof it could last longer, maybe even powering itself most of the time.

No, California didn't ask that. The California Independent System Operator "CAISO" suggested in a Tweet to not charge during peak hours. We were also asked to run major appliances in the evenings. In all the years of living here, it only happend once and only during a freak heatwave. The grid is growing. Solar is growing. Relax

What this means is that there will be a massive amount of buying of diesel trucks in California before 2036, or trucking companies will move out of state so they can continue to run diesel trucks, and there will be a lot more shipping to non-California ports because shipping costs to California will go up due to trains being forced to switch to diesel trains at the state border.

Unless a suitable, economical replacement is found for diesel, you're going to see shipping costs in California skyrocket. That will make the economy crash because many living there now will not be able to afford to do so then. As an Ohio resident, I don't want to pay for California's dumb liberal ideas when their state finally does collapse.

For drayage, an electric truck costs less to operate. That is why Amazon is making the switch. This law will have no net effect on almost all companies. The days of the diesel truck for "last mile" operations are coming to an end. As battery technology continues to improve, the range issue fades. Remember that legally, a truck driver has to stop and rest. If the truck is recharging while they rest, the driver will have no change to their job except not needing to fuel up.

I love how she asked "how will this increase cost" the company i work for has a fleet of 38 trucks. We are adding 4 trucks later this year, totalling 2 million dollars. Those are diesel. If every truck that wants to run in the state of CA needs to be electric in less than 20 years, the cost to just up and change out all the trucks in every fleet will be astronomical

Don't forget to factor in the battery cost. You will need to replace batteries every 6 months at about $10,000 per time for such a big truck with large battery arrays. High drain, high charge, high load, high heat - batteries are not made to do that and endure that punishment every single day for 24 hours a day of constant driving. And guess where all the materials being mined to make all those new batteries come from.

I have seen so many videos that say how horrible the batteries are for these vehicles. They are dangerous for the environment and they can't be recycled easily either. They said the amount of energy to produce them and then the poison to recycle them is just as bad for the environment as fossil fuels.

With one full-sized American driving, you've got about 800lbs left of carrying capacity, but veggies aren't very dense, so I suspect if I crammed it full we're talking about a little over a quarter ton of capacity, limited by volume instead of weight. In other words, not ideal for hauling more than people :)

Furthermore, the amount of EV and infrastructure changes from now to 2036 will be even *more* than from 2009 due to the exponential growth curve of technology and emerging market places (logistics curve). Also, *existing* diesel trucks can still operate *indefinitely* past 2036. Just won't be able to buy any *new* trucks. Semi trucks have service life of 10+ years depending on maintenance and duty schedule.

@@LundunDansqua The engines are not going to be the problem. I think they are the future. It's the issue of the logistics of requiring all these trucks to now be connected to the power grid. California is going to have to invest heavily into their grid if they want this to work. But once those trucks leave California, where will they get charge? For this to be viable other states will also have to invest heavily in their grid and add charging stations. I'm not saying we shouldn't look towards electric semi trucks in the future, I think they'd be great, but California doing this alone in only 13 years doesn't seem realistic to me.

Freightliner is the only Semi Truck manufacturer producing Semi's in America, which means majority of them will have to be imported. Freightliner just started production in 2022. Brilliant y'all. I used to work with a Driver from California. He had a 1973 Peter built that was fully restored. He retired when they made his truck illegal. He was getting twice the fuel mileage of a modern rig. He said he was way too old to go into debt for a new truck

As well as the manufacturing costs with the need for oil based products (plastics, tires, lubricants, etc) and the included power for the manufacture. Then shipping.. Diesel engine does'n generate CO2 , only gasoline does . Modern engine makes actually cleaner air at tail pipe then it is at intake, Exhaust air is mostly steam. NO is eliminate by injecting urea. On other hand, there is benefit on brain health to inhale NO, see other you tube.

Keep in mind when all these EV cars and trucks are charging it jacks up the peak rates for all. We will be paying higher dmv, electricity rates to make up for the lost gas tax revenue.

These types of rules always impact the small owner-operators the most. The better way would be to mandate charging stations first and only after, mandating truck type. They have it backward.

Just wait until all of the drivers boycott California & their grocery stores will be depleted, the cost of fuel will be even more insane, the majority of the out of state deliveries are brought by older diesel trucks, so once the regulations give a reputation of traffic citations for drivers no one will want to go there. There aren’t enough big companies to fill the demand even if they do have an all electric fleet. They deserve everything coming because they voted for it, but then they’ll start moving to FL or TX & repeat their voting habits 🫤

So I was reading an article in some scientific rag about how the air in LA was tested and found that the greatest concentration of pollutants in their air came from personal hygiene products like body spray and perfumes. I loved the irony that the things these folks predominantly came from the products they used to make themselves appear more beautiful
