The British ( English,Scots, Welsh and Irish) spread the Empire through not just warfare but also trade. Many colonies were handed back peacefully towards the end of the Empire as the principles of democracy and human decency came to the fore. On balance, The Empire was, eventually, a force for positive change globally. It brought stability, the rule of law and technological advances to countries that perhaps would not gone that way. As a British subject my feelings towards those days are to look back and contextualise through the prism of time the actions taken. Some actions whilst reprehensible in the modern day were at the time of happening somewhat excusable. I look at the positive effects our tiny island off the northern coast of Europe has had.

The English / British were very late in starting any sort of colonial work , other countries in Europe had done it for a long while and it was starting to restrict trade so something had to be done starting with the east coast of America . The land in France was because of 1066 when the Normans ( Viking French ) invaded and they owned a lot of land on the west coast of France due to marriages etc and they wanted more as so did the king of France . One point to remember is french only was spoken in the English court until King Henry 5 and he said how can we rule when we can't talk to our people so he made it that only English was to be spoken ( you could make a point that up to this point it that it was the french that started any wars but did have an English army lol ) . Any trading places had to be defended and most were from Europe like france , Germany , Holland , Sweden , Portugal , Italy and not forgetting Spain who all wanted land and was determined to stop the British ( hence the help America got from them , they were not so much as your friends but it was to stop the British at all costs ) . The main reason why we became to dominant was our technology and culture where most if not all other countries were still using a form of autocracy ie royalty and the like or were stuck due to religious beliefs, whereas the British focused on democracy which allows the constant recycling of power, vs long term powers who fall due to incompetence, greed or religious reasons and also due to England’s geographic location means that England tends to be isolated or hard to get to making any invasion extremely difficult due to the dangerous nature of the English Channel even to this day, up north you had the cold Atlantic seas which tends to be very rough, added in the fact that Britain has a lot of resources at the time as well as strong rivals such as France and the rest of Europe ensuring that Britain is always combat ready as well as being strong enough to withstand any invasion, on that note again to England’s culture and unique history made England a hub of new and life changing inventions such as the steam engine which can increase work output by ten times, trains ensured mass transportation of heavy goods and resources as well as people, the British doctrines for ranged combat as well as a heavy emphasis on naval and navigational strengths and skills ensured a strong navy as well as a strong merchant navy, and another key factor was England’s approach towards expansion was mostly economically or expeditionary vs military subjugation and conversion rather than the former which is why many cultures still exist to this day ie India, also what ensured Britain’s dominance was again its geography, being an island made attacks less common if not downright impossible, the weather whilst not the greatest was good enough for plenty of food, lack of dangerous wildlife (yes we do get mosquitoes but they rarely happen) so things like bears, wolves ect and in reality the only dangerous thing in England outside of humans are either seagulls and foxes, which makes life somewhat less dangerous

It all began with a financial innovation called the Bank of England established in 1694 to fund the expansion of the navy , which enabled world trade routes essential for the island trading nation to be protected. The resulting imports of cheaper food wrecked the British farming industry, which was then the main employment for the British population. The resulting migration into cities then provided the workforce necessary to fuel the industrial revolution, which further cemented British world dominance. As a kid in the 50's I recall a Sunday morning music request programme on the radio (Two-way family favourites?) that would sequentially link up with bases around the world to exchange family and sweetheart greetings with British Forces Posted Overseas (BFPO's). By then I think it was mainly Germany, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Aden and maybe Hong Kong and a few bases in the Far East.

Interesting.... look at every country in the world that today speaks our language, and you can see that we invaded and took over there. And we are a pint sized country that had massive ambitions, and would, by area, get lost it if were dropped in any of the great lakes of the States.

Any country around for a thousand years has fought to remain around for a thousand years. Before that we had 500 years of invasion after the Romans left. Most of the world was a very different place, countries didn't exist, like Germany was Prussia until 1871, France was Gaul until 1450 and Russia didn't exist until the 15th century, Brussel was created out of the Napoleonic wars, the names we see are modern and the territories weren't clearly defined for much of early Europe, you get the idea... If the British weren't in India and invading Afghanistan in 1839-1842 Russia would have invaded India. The context of invasion or war is significant, but not here they are simply defined as aggressive invasion. Don't forget the other empires Netherlands, France, Spain and Portugal... colour them in too and see where the conflicts were and why... Bare in mind it was the French (using modern labels) that invaded England in 1066 and England spoke French for 300 years. The Union Jack as a flag didn't exist in its current form until 1801.

Most of these countries are still part of the Commonwealth. Some French colonies joined too. We did evil but we did good too. The Indians used to burn widows to death on the funeral pyre of their husbands. When the British discovered it they told the Indians to stop. Indian holy men insisted it go ahead as it was their custom. The British Governor replied "Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs!". The widow lived.

This video is actually highly inaccurate in using the term "Invaded", over half of the areas he quoted as "invaded" were either liberated in time of war, or actually started their relationship with Great Britain through trade and were actually more than happy to have a strong bond within the Empire, because of the security the Empire brought with it. Yes some countries were invaded, but in most cases it was because they were being ruled by British enemy's, or countries that had fallen under the control of say Nazi Germany as just one example. Because if the Empire was so terrible, why are there 54 of those 65 countries now in the Commonwealth of Nations (with more wanting in), which they joined willingly of their own accord under leadership of Her Majesty and the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth of Nations is more than just a trading pact amongst member states, it's also a security pact that is similar to NATO, just it contains about a third of the Worlds population. And since then the CANZUK International Agreement has been signed by Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K., and along with the other Commonwealth Countries also starting to put the weight of the Commonwealth behind it by also wanting to sign on, because of an easing of freedom of trade and movement between Countries. This will be a giant change in the financial and manufacturing world. The first signs are showing already, with the E.U. starting to suddenly start playing nicely with the U.K. And China looking towards the CANZUK and Commonwealth nervously judging by the sudden increase in various approaches they are taking towards us. A lot has changed in the World, especially after the last 5 years of American politics, and so you tend to look to your old friends to sure things up. What the other financial and industrialised countries and Unions might need to take notice of is, thanks to the Global reach enjoyed, not just by the U.K. but the other members of the Commonwealth of Nations and the growing CANZUK International Agreement, one third of the planets population is getting stronger in every possible way. Plus the 14 British Overseas Territories or Protectorates, with one U.S. State wishing that they could join. The U.S.A. has 5 of which 4 want to become British Overseas Territories or Protectorates instead. Gibraltar was actually gifted to the King George the Third by King Ferdinand the Seventh of Spain after the Napoleonic Wars, owing to the fact that it was the Anglo-Portuguese Army that Liberated Spain from the French. Yes Franco tried to take it back just after the Second World War, but he couldn't overwhelm the 150 Naval Marines and Commandos from 42 Regiment. Franco lost at least 600 dead and twice as many wounded.

They chose to be part of the Commonwealth, it serves a purpose. The Commonwealth is a democracy, the Empire was not, so saying they joined the Commonwealth because they liked being part of the British Empire is inaccurate. If they’d like being part of the Empire they wouldn’t have chosen independence. The Commonwealth chooses its head, currently HM The Queen, but they choose who comes next. It will be the Prince of Wales, but only because the Commonwealth recently voted that it would be him, it could equally well have been someone else. The UK is just one country within the Commonwealth, we don’t tell Commonwealth countries what to do. The only similarity between the Commonwealth and the British Empire is that many of the same countries are involved and some of them choose to keep HM The Queen as their Head of State.

Stripping people of their identity and culture, stealing from them whilst forcing your own “civilisation” is hardly anything to be proud of. And no, Britain isn’t repentant. They have blatantly refused to admit and apologise even crooked France has offered some sort of “acknowledgement”. Also some of the art work stolen from some African countries (eg Nigeria) is still in the British museum and they refuse to return it. The British literarily amalgamated tribes to form countries for their own economic benefits, those tribes continue to be at war to this day while the British still gain. The vid used the archaic spelling of Irak - the name it was known by when the British ruled it. The reason being that the phonetic translations between Arabic and English have been revised over the 20th century in order to improve accuracy and a number of K sounds were re-rendered as Qs. Other relics of this change are seen in how "Muslim" was once written as "Moslem" and "Qur'an" once written as "Koran". The video also used a few other archaic spellings like "Wassington" and Nicarague" but didn't use it for many other examples on the map. So, really not sure why they did that as the inconsistency is confusing.

It's tempting to believe Britain is in relatively better shape. But then up pops Harry and Megan. The statement that 65 countries celebrate their independence is not true of all the countries. Countries like Canada celebrate their founding, not independence. The shape of possessions in Africa tended to follow natural boundaries or existing tribal boundaries. Some of Africa was invaded by the British to crush the institution of slavery. Overall the British are very peaceful people and were forced to defend themselves particularly when they were in other counties, sadly they could not complete their collection of countries.

It does however feel as if this near four hundred year domination of the world by one "tribe" is coming to an end and the world will become a far more complicated place
