This is great and I don't mean any disrespect at all but to get his feel you really need to disregard the strong beats, having watched a documentary of him teaching some stuff one thing I picked up on is that his rhythm is totally unsterile and he is a master of manipulating time by playing in front or behind the beat and if you listen to the original solo it has a totally different feel love all your lessons but think this is a really important aspect of getting that feel

Hey Justin, I just what to say great thank you to you for this advice at the begging of the video. I've tried to do that by ear, which I thought I can never ever do, but I managed to "decrypt" nearly 95% of the solo. It was such an interesting exercise! I came back to the video to check the parts I'm missing (end bits).. Wow, such a great tutorial of one of the best solos ever created!

Justin recommends that we try to pick this solo up by ear. However, what are the building blocks of picking up a solo yourself? Does any one know what are the underlying concepts of picking up a solo. (Other than knowing scales) Maybe I can learn those and then try and pick up the solo myself. Right now, I wouldn't know where to start really.

Really great lesson Justin, one question I have though... from chord analysis the song seems to be in the key of D minor... but the solo seems like it's in F# minor / A major. The solo sounds great but from a theory perspective I can't really figure out how this solo "works" with the song?
@WooliteMammoth
4 жыл бұрын
Verse is in Am, Chorus is Dm. The solo is just a modulation to the I major. It's a cool little trick to make it sound separate but not that separate. Think of how it makes you feel - the switch to major gives it a feel of fake relief or happiness. Think of the chorus - DREAM of Californication. The solo is a self enclosed little environment separate from the verse and chorus much like a happy major dream. When it ends it goes back to the reality of the Am chord and the hopelessness of California's depressing themes like waking up back to reality. The solo works through the contrast both thematically and harmonically. They do a lot of major to minor or minor to major modulation or just borrow a chord from the minor scale - see songs like Desecration Smile (intro is in Emaj, switches to Em for the verse to sound "darker" then to A major for the chorus), the bridge in Under the Bridge (hehehe) chords go Amaj, Am, G, F.
