I don't know what it is about the new prog bands, they can obviously play. It's probably just me being an old git. Stuff like Floyd, Genesis, and Yes seems to have more depth, and that's what I grew up listening to. This was almost like a grunge/prog song, Nickelback with a degree. I know I've asked before but could you react to some Talk Talk. They started out as a standard synth pop band. Then they did a complete about turn musically. I guarantee you've never heard anything like it. Mark Hollis was a genius who sadly died a couple of years ago. Their use of silence, and space is amazing, which I know is an unusual thing to say about music, but sometimes it's about knowing when to play something. Their masterpiece is Spirit Of Eden and I'd recommend the opening track The Rainbow. If you like that then try New Grass off their follow up Laughing Stock. It's beautiful.

I found this song by accident when I needed to replace that other under 25 minute pick, and it seemed like a musically substantial piece. I still think it's a sign that people are writing prog these days. I bet the heavier sounding last part was supposed to be in contrast to the choir-like vocal section, and would appeal to fans of theirs who liked heavier sounds. I just wish that last part wasn't so long and repetitive.

Hi, I can't say I didn't like it, because I did enjoy the beginning, then I just wanted it to end. I think I have been spoilt rotten listening to incredible Prog Rock music for so many years now, that when someone new comes along, and I've never heard of them, plus they sound like a more established group, it just to me personally becomes a same old same old. There was nothing new or memorable. Tomorrow I will have forgotten it. It made me sit up at the start and go, Ooo this could be good, and it was, but then I lost interest. However I never will judge a group but one track. A the moment I wouldn't be thinking, I must buy this album. Early days guys - I will need to hear something else. I also have to say - Lex, I love the pendant it is beautiful. Great reaction and you are correct. I personally feel they lost their way, with this one.

Not sure what to think of this one. I actually have their previous album, Bloom, but never got in to it (not sure I'd ever recognize anything of it out of context). I didn't care for the lead guitar flourishes that were prevalent in the first part of the song. The ending didn't bother me, though. Did like the "choral vocal" part. The parts I did like reminded me of Haken, but I like Haken more. Speaking of, I think you'd find Haken worthy. Try the very eccentric song "Cockroach King" from their best album, The Mountain. It's like Gentle Giant goes metal, with bits of Dream Theater, King Crimson and some jazz flourishes. A little bit of djent as well, but not overwhelming.

Parts of this were awesome. And understanding that this is the final song, maybe it has some callbacks to earlier parts of the record, but there were just too many seemingly unrelated parts. Nick & Lex, your taste is right in line with mine. I like heavy stuff, but those last sections were definitely in the outer reach of acceptable metal for me. It only hurts because those early parts were so damn good. I wonder what this band will sound like next year.....

Great review but have to disagree with you on not liking the heaviness. Dream Theater had way more heavy stuff in some of their songs. I would point to the Awake album having some very heavy riffs. Also the song Graves links back to the opening riff quite a bit but in varied sound forms. Their new album Rise Radiant is amazing and is softer all round. But the band really showcase of great they are as musicians.

Great song, great Band. What annoys me a bit is that almost every progressive rock title should always sound like Dream Theater. I seemed to have only touched the surface of Caligula's Horse with the few tracks I've heard and added to playlists, and that they are well known to Prog Metallers and those that like Tool and similar bands. Nick, I have to defend this track; The 1st half, the vocals and the melodies of the guitar were BEAUTIFUL, I loved that part. It had parts that reminded me of later era "Haken". But after the pause . . . . I LOVED the transition! And I wasn't struck that it was _that_ drastic a change, and was it THAT heavy? :P I thought it was really gorgeous that they could be so melodic, then heavier in the end (thank you Meshuggah and Opeth for instilling those abrupt or atypical changes). I don't see this any different than what Opeth has done in their heavier Progressive/Death Metal days. From "Brutality to Beauty" and visa/versa. I don't think it's quite as "Djent" as those type of bands, again, its much like Haken (like your reaction of their instrumental "Nil by Mouth") but yes, as Nick said; they have that "melancholic" vibe, much like Tool, but at times heavier (like the many bands that have been inspired by Tool, Riverside, Porcupine Tree and Paradise Lost). I REALLY believe, the more you take a listen to this track on your own, you will have a different take on it Nick and Lex. It was well put together, and the ending part is made to headbang to (i.e. the ending of Opeth's "Deliverance" for example, BEAUTIFULLY Heavy and almost impossible not to headbang to, even with the very tricky timing). The repetitive riffs at the end are to feel the vibe, the emotion . . . and you guys were moving to the groove ;). I'd have to read the lyrical content to see if there is a part in the song that brings on the "change" of emotion. I'm having second thoughts about you hearing "Meshuggah" now Nick, hehe :p. It would be MUCH heavier than this, but again, since you are a Holdsworth fan, the track I suggested (before they used 9 strings) shows why the Lead Guitarist is a HUGE fan as well. But I want to keep it a _surprise_ when Allan's influence comes in. Again, the bicycle analogy; At first you need training wheels, then you ride your bike on your own with confidence, but later you want a better bike to tear-up the road or trails! :D The more you listen to various types of Metal and Prog Metal, I really believe you guys will get used to the abrupt changes and heavier tones and extremes. Even I have a point where it gets too heavy as a Death Metal fan (Infant Annihilator . . . the band, and a few others, that actually hit my personal ceiling). But saying all this, I also realize; "One mans meat is another mans poison". Edit: Maybe it's like exposing someone to Dream Theater for the 1st time with a track like; "Metropolis - Part I: 'The Miracle and the Sleeper". The middle part would be really _out there_ for the average listener, even for Metalheads (instead of introducing them to "Pull Me Under" or "Take the Time"). I had to searchout the lyrics, and it provided a link to this interview as the band talks about each track, and for "Graves". And the aggression at the end makes even more sense as the music is a _reflection_ of the lyrics: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1JyhvZ2GbmWXrX4 I have had the same fears and anxiety if I were to be a Father, and what I've lived through in my life . . . "[Verse 1] Faint heart World can wait for the weary hands to learn it's too late But I'm spit and I'm rough dirt What do you want from me? Faint heart Tip of my tongue A song like youth, wasted on the young And it's over and over What kind of father could I be? [Verse 2] Faint heart Rain to the spark At last my light, giving in to dark And the thought of it crumbling to dust, no, I was not done Faint heart I beg she won't see the coward, the cur, maybe this is me These hands shaped stone But I'm scared like you wouldn't believe [Bridge 1] Faint heart Only a glimpse I was wrong, take it back, just let this one live [Verse 3] Then it hits me like ice to the bone What if I'm just like him? For some reason I didn't find this comment a week ago, so I thought maybe it was deleted. Their assessment of the song went from very positive to very negative due to the last 4 minutes - but if you go back to the beginning of the song, when the drums and rhythm gtrs. come in, they seem to be drop tuned there too. It just isn't accompanied by the repetitive shouting. Thanks for all of the music. I really haven't been keeping up with the music scene recently, because though I'm still into guitar, I haven't developed a liking for the harsh vocal styles popular these days. Maybe Jinjer will be the "gateway drug" to that. Glancing at the music, Kim Mitchell's name jumped out at me. I used to see the original Max Webster lineup in bars in the late 70's whenever they were playing. So my excuse for no longer keeping up with certain trends is that I'm old.
