Just discovered Calimoto after doing a lot of research to improve ride planning for the Garmin Zumo XT. Makes it really easy to do. I’m trialling the free version. I’d like to go premium or even to just purchase the map package. Euro to Australian $ conversion is terrible at present so it makes it rather exxy. Not sure if you can compare it to buying a Garmin or whatever. With that you get a dedicated bike nav with free map updates. But then you can also use an old phone with Google maps and a Quadlock mount, I guess. In any case, Calimoto makes ride planning so much easier than that abomination called Garmin Basecamp, that’s for sure. Anyway, thanks for the videos. Well done.

I use Tom Tom satnav primarily because it gives me warning of all the speed cameras, even if I'm not following a route - just turned on. You briefly highlighted that it shows cameras but didn't go into detail. Does it give you voice and screen warnings when approaching cameras (using a route or just turned on) or is it just an icon on the map? Tom Tom online route planning is rather basic but it also supplies twisty and very twisty, etc. This looks far more sophisticated and user friendly.

I completely agree that this is by far the best satnav for bikes, especially for the round trip mode. Unfortunately I live bang in the centre of England and so had to choose one half of the country as my free map (I chose Northern half), and consequently many routes which stray into the Southern half are unavailable to me. I did ask Calimoto if they could add a Central region option as the free map, but no luck. If you use it all the time, then £49pa is reasonable I suppose, but for the casual user it's rather steep I think. No complaint as to functionality though.

@teapotone
2 жыл бұрын
No - if you check the main junction board before a roundabout and look at the sign for the roundabout, if you count how many options there are displayed, you’ll find that Calimoto is correct. Often there will be an ‘exit’ on the roundabout that doesn’t actually go anywhere, it’s just a dead end into a field or lay-by etc, but Calimoto will count this as an option. It’s always best to have your phone on display if you can, then you can see on the map where to exit.👍

Not sure if you’ll know but is it like Strava (app for push bikes) where your trips are public to view unless you change settings? Cause there’s been an few issues with thieves tracking peoples routes on Strava.

Great videos keep it up. I did the full membership to this app thabks to you. However I do have a question. So the routes planned by calimoto are all paved road right?
@teapotone
3 жыл бұрын
Yes they should be, but if you have it set to the Super Twisty option it can take you down some really ‘rural’ roads that may not have been used in a long time! I pretty much never use the super twisty option because of that. It works off OpenSource mapping - not the google mapping structure most main satnav’s do - hence why there’s no speed or traffic information available. They hope that as the user base grows and finances increase, they can invest into the google mapping infrastructure and these facilities will become available

Hi. Thanks for the vid. One burning question for me, is how can I minimise the notifications? I'm doing a 300mile ride with 90+ waypoints. She's driving me mad with 4-5 instructions for every single junction. It's going to totally ruin the ride with constant nagging. I know with Google maps you can set it to less info. Hope someone can answer this before I leave. Thanks 👍

I really like Calimoto and use it loads, but I don’t think they have the balance between “freemium” and paid versions right. I’ve tried the paid version and wasn’t all that interested in all of the additional features. Freemium works really well and has great functionality, so I’ve not a great incentive to pay the premium. If it was £10-£15 a year then I’d be happy to pay. Trouble is, if they downgraded freemium to encourage me to spend £45 then I’d stop using it. Cheaper with a few more bells and whistles then I think they’d make more money. I absolutely love that it tracks where you’ve been! I’m trying to colour in Bournemouth and Poole!

Hello Bruce I have a premium account and the one feature I would find really useful which I cannot find is route export on my mobile phone app. I also have a comment on road numbers the desktop version does show the road numbers but only if you are very careful when you zoom in. Have you found a way to make them more visible and if so please show me how.
@teapotone
3 жыл бұрын
Hello bud, You can share a route easily on your phone to another Calimoto user, but you can’t yet export it as a .gpx file - that has to be done via the desktop version. Regarding road numbers, I just do the same as you and zoom in/out until I see them

Hi Bruce, informative video on Calimoto. Hoping to do a Central Asian trip in 2022. Do you think Calimoto is a good substitute to Garmin? Your thoughts please?
@teapotone
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nazar, Calimoto works off OpenSource mapping, so often the maps aren’t as updated or detailed as the likes of google etc - but I used OpenSource maps for lots of my RTW trip without issue. Personally I wouldn’t bother with any satnav these days as your phone does a better job. HOWEVER - you will need to make sure your phone is unlocked and allows the use of ANY SIM card. That way you can buy a local SIM card in whatever country you arrive in, pop it in your phone and you then use data at that local rate (which is almost always a LOT cheaper than using your own country’s sim in a foreign land). You can set Calimoto to offline mode, that way it’s not relying on any date signal, but you’ll have to download the relevant map before you go offline. Also make sure you can power your phone either off the bike or from a battery pack. Calimoto drains my iPhone 11 Pro battery flat in about an hour and a half so I power it off the bike or an abler power pack 👍

Been using this for a couple of months and generally it's been great and it's pretty simple to use and finds some interesting routes and road if I'm just out for a bimble. It did try to send me through a 2 foot deep river crossing (unsuitable for motor vehicles road) on a recent trip to Norfolk, just 10 mins after I'd been extolling it's prowess over my mates £350 bike satnav .. so 9/10, losing a point for embarrassing me 😂

Bruce, the PC based route planner can do round trip routes, on you vid at 9.30 mins, where it says "more" if you click that it brings up the random (or directional) round trip generator.
