Timothy's performance is one of the most honest and most natural in recent years! It's beautifully nuanced with little details, little mannerisms and gestures. There are scenes where he doesn't say a single word but his face and expressions say a thousand words! Probably the most beautiful lead performance in a movie from a young actor in a very, very long time!

The film weaves its own spell and I, too, walked out of the cinema feeling good from having been washed by its caring observation of deeply felt love and passion. It is a beautifully realised film. For me, Timothee Chamalet’s performance is the centre of it; he captures Elio’s loss of self in this romance so well. Personally, I have doubts about the casting of Armie in this role but there is no doubt he gives his all in this performance. I disagree with you Stu on one thing: these two are not normal characters; one is a Ph.D grad who is about to publish his first book, the other is the highly intelligent, highly talented, highly precocious son of a university professor. They are as attracted intellectually as they are emotionally. Perhaps because they relate to each other and the world around them at such an erudite level, their conjunction is even more touching. They pack their books and learning to one side, and love with the abandon of joyful discovery of each other.

I absolutely LOVED this film! It’s the best gay romance movie since Brokeback Mountain. I have never really wanted a sequel to a dramatic/independent movie before- until now. Apparently the novel doesn’t end where the film ends; it continues and picks up with Elio and Oliver 15-20 years later.

Great review Stu lol! I watched CMBYN at a film festival in New Zealand over a month ago. It's AWESOME! Luca & Co have adapted Andre Aciman's book brilliantly. Armie & Timothee have a natural chemistry which enhances their great (& heart felt) performances. There also is great humour in the film. My LOL moment would be the over talkative couple at the dinner table. Keep an eye on Elio's parents during this scene, particularly Elio's Dad. When Sufjan's songs appear, they are both inspiring & heartbreaking. And if you haven't seen the film, STAY for Timothee Chalamet's devastating performance as the credits roll. CMBYN is THE BEST movie that I have seen this year. Oh & one other thing. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, you will NEVER look the same way at a peach ever again lol!

I know this is an old post, but just thought I’d comment anyway. I absolutely loved this movie. I saw it 5 times in the theatre’s and bought the DVD as well and have watched it at home multiple times. The acting, the story, the location, the music, the pace, the atmosphere, I just loved everything about this film. As you said, one just feels like they are watching 2 people’s relationship naturally evolve. The chemistry is so good between the two leads, you don’t feel like you are watching them act in a movie. I became a big fan of Sufjan Stevens after this film! Such beautiful music, I bought the soundtrack. Thanks for your reaction to the film! I enjoyed watching. Stay safe! 🙂✌🏻🙂

NataliGreen Did you think the film was faithful to the book? Do you prefer either the book or the film? Thanks
@nataligreen517
6 жыл бұрын
Dennis Staughton It's difficult when a film is based on a book, because there's always changes because of time, locations, etc... and sometimes they're not always good. So if you are seeing a film that's based on a book you should be prepared for some changes. Having said that, for CMBYN i was of course prepared, but the trailer had this ambience, so peacefull and natural that i thought that it was going to be a great film! And thank god it was! It's not the same as the book of course but for me it's as faithful as it gets because the essence wasn't lost, the message wasn't lost either, the pace, the places and many many things. Seriously only Luca could have made this Masterpiece, and if you see his other movies you can tell a beautiful pattern as for the soul of his movies. I really hate when people don't answer what they were questioned, but i'm going to have to hate myself i guess. I can't pick one for the life of me, they're both the same but so different? It's like your favourite meal prepared by your mother or in your favourite restaurant (weird metaphor sorry) and they both have such a special place in my heart, BOTH! Have you seen the movie or read the book? And wich one do you prefer?
@dennisstaughton7474
6 жыл бұрын
NataliGreen Thanks for getting back. Don't hate yourself! Your answer is exactly what I was hoping for. I just saw the film last weekend. I loved so much about it, but being about the same age in 1983 as the Elio character and having a similar experience, I saw missed opportunities about the main characters' connection. I will be reading the book as soon as I can find it. I'm generally more of a reader than film-goer, so I'm looking forward to the book. While the movie is visually enticing and absolutely gorgeous, I'm hoping the book digs a little deeper into the emotional connection leading into the relationship. I didnt find Oliver as appealing as many apparently do. I would like to like him more in the book, if that makes any sense! I guess that's not the wisest way to embark on a novel, though... Thanks again. P.s. loved the food metaphor, btw!

Dennis Staughton I have to see my notifications to see if someone reply because i never get my notifications, but yours just popped in the morning wich is weird because it never happens, destiny (or my app updated). That's what i love about this film, that no matter what age you can identify yourself with the character because it's about love. But what do you mean by "missed oportunities about the main character's connection"? are you talking about the development of his personality? And i'm more of a book reader too, i read the book first so for me the movie was perfect, considering the complexity of the book. And in the book does develop the relationship but of course in the eyes of Elio, so we can only see Elio's emotions and what he thinks Oliver's are. Why didn't you find Oliver apealing? Fisically? Or Personality wise? And i honestly ended up hating Oliver, but mostly Elio because they didn't try enough for me at least :'( . And because Elio tells everything from his perspective, Oliver sometimes is the worst and sometimes the best, so it's really up to you. And yes read it, i think you would like it, it more descriptive. I have the pdf if you want it, i can send it to you. P. S: thanks 💖

What you said, lol. Impeccable, beautifully quiet film that takes its time (it never drags) and IMO flawless writing, directing, and across the board fine acting from all, with the two principals even that much more outstanding. You'd have to be blind with prejudice or dead not to find it deeply moving, humane. Nothing is ever 'perfect,' while I thought this one came damned close.

I really wonder how long before people exist their hallucinatory state and start realizing this movie is about a kid getting psychologically destroyed by a psychopath ? 9 minutes review, not a word about the fact that Elio has a girlfriend his age named Marzia at the beginning of the story and goes as far as having sex with her. And nobody finds this strange or problematic whatsoever. Naaa, mysterious-hollow love allows everything to happen. It's magic. And manipulation and abuse never happen under the sun.
