Regardless of cultural and respectful reasons, the Word says not to do so, and it is the final authority.

When I read Matthew 23 and saw that, I stopped calling my pastor Pastor and started calling him and other pastors by their names. When they questioned it (and some demanded that I revert), I showed them Matthew 23 and told them I won't do it anymore because Jesus said not to, and their uncomfortable/angry response to it showed me that it was a matter of pride for them to be called by that title. I pointed out that the pride of the leaders and the tendency of the people to look to the leaders first instead of to God is what Jesus spoke against. They were each breaking the first 2 Commandments, and also the 10th. It becomes an issue of whom you'll put first, obey, revere as priority, and risk offending. A humble servant can put away the title, understanding that it belongs to God, and that they are merely methods of conveyance of the True Pastor's/Master's/Teacher's message. We're like bullhorns, microphones, and amplifier speakers conveying the message/commands which come from the Teacher and Master Himself, THROUGH US. Who are we, as public service announcement tools, to get upset about not receiving an honor which actually, literally and ultimately ONLY belongs to the Voice Himself? Be happy to be a vessel He uses to speak through and stop fighting to be called by His titles. God is the true leader, by ANY reverent name or title. He's the Most High and we're all on the same low level as spiritual siblings. A first name basis between siblings is sufficient! If God puts you in a position of authority within the Faith, AMEN, and to Him be ALL the glory! Be glad, be content, be joyous in, and be at peace with the fact that He uses you as an instrument for His glory, and reject claiming any of it for yourself, by a title or otherwise. A truly humble servant wants to know the LORD better and make Him known, so that HE receives all glory and honor, and the servant seeks none of the glory of God for himself. SERVE the LORD with gladness...not yourself with greed for that which rightfully belongs to Him ALONE. Being the sound equipment for the One Whose sandal straps we are unworthy to untie is MORE than enough.

@@michaeldukes4108 I don't think he is. I've seen so many pastors and so called apostles and what not refuse to be called anything but that. They do carry about pride and refuse to level as Brothers but rather exalt themselves and lord over the sheep. Jesus specifically condemns those who lord over the flock. Not to mention Paul and Peter and John the ones who had the upmost authority didn't have people calling them by apostle or pastor but rather by their name reserving the title to adress those who would question their authority. If they didn't and leveled with the church as equals then why does a pastor refuse to be called brother so and so rather than pastor? Their heart isn't right nor do they rightly discern the body of Christ. Jesus is the head of the church and we are all members of one body. Not one with greater honor than another.

Good points but remember, if we claim to be 'sola scriptura' then we can't put culture or tradition ahead of what is taught in the Word. That said, in the NT we find that to address another Believer (outside of their given name) is simply to call them 'brother' or 'sister'. No special titles for anyone and NO distinction in the Body between 'clergy' and 'laity' ..all are equal of the same family and have the same Father.

*Titles puff people up, including professors whom expect to be called "Dr. ____." "Knowledge puffs up." Jesus was addressing pride* when He said: "call no one teacher" in this Mt. 23 text. *No teacher should call himself "Dr.," or expect to be called such* in the classroom, social media or elsewhere. 1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat. 3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do. 4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them. 5 But *they do all their works to be seen by men.* They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the fringes of their garments, 6 and *love the place of honor* at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 the *salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi by men.* 8 But *you are not to be called ‘Rabbi’, for one is your teacher,* the Christ, and all of you are brothers. 9 Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. 12 *Whoever exalts himself* will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

*Calling Ph.D.s and professors “Dr. ____,” pastors “Pastor ____,”* and etc. is also *the opposite of what Paul said to do* in 1 Cor. 12.: “Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, *on those we bestow more abundant honor… whereas our presentable parts have no such need.”* 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired. 19 If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now they are many members, but one body. 21 The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 *Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor;* and our unpresentable parts have more abundant propriety; 24 *whereas our presentable parts have no such need.* But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part, 25 *that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.* Doing the opposite of what Jesus and Paul said to do is *sin.* It’s rebellion against what the Holy Spirit wants us to do, and leads to pride, disharmony within the body of Christ - *one-man shows instead of unity.* *Jesus promised to give us His glory that we’d be ‘ONE’ with each other in Him “that the world will know”* - Jesus' prayer in John 17. No church in America right now even has the reputation for being alive, let alone actually is alive according to Jesus’ assessment. See Sardis in Rev. 3:1-6. Where is the glory of God, the presence of God? *Why do we think it’s okay to continue business as usual without the presence of God anymore,* since God guarantees that when we draw near to Him He’ll draw near to us. Shouldn’t we be figuring out why churches are spiritually dead right now, instead of acting like everything is okay? Instead of making excuses, let's do what the Bible says, including: when Jesus said “call no man teacher,” then we should call no man “Dr. ____,” “Pastor ____,” etc.. *Instead of puffing up those who already know they're important, we should be building up* members in the body who seem less important, as Paul said “that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another" - 1 Cor. 12:25. And this is not “legalism.” It’s obedience. Steve Hill, who worked with Michael Brown at Brownsville called out *"antinomianism"* (against rules) as one of the seven great lies in the church today, based on his spiritual avalanche dream.

Pastor, bishop, missionary, apostle, teacher, evangelist, and prophet. These are ministries. The noun “minister” means servant. The verb “minister” means serve. So those are not titles for impressing people. Where in the Bible do we see anyone addressed as “Pastor Peter” or “Apostle Paul” or “Prophet Isaiah” or “Evangelist Philip”? *Not even one time.* They were simply called by their names.

I appreciate what Dr Brown said about secular, cultural titles. I'm a missionary in the Philippines. This culture loves titles to show respect to elders. If a Filipino is addressing someone older, he/she will use a title. Since I'm the oldest person in my church, most of the adults call me 'Kuya,' which means older brother. Others call me 'Amahan.' which means dad. Many of the children call me 'Lolo,' which means Grandpa. These are all cultural titles, not ecclesiastical titles. If you oppose those titles that my friends voluntarily give me, do you ever use "Mr" or "Mrs"?

That's because Peter calls himself an Elder. Isaiah is called a prophet in the NT. Paul calls himself a bond servant of Messiah and the least of the disciples.

That would be a hard no. Can you call you biological dad ‘father?’ What is the context Yeshua (Jesus) was meaning? He was meaning in the religious sense. By address people by titles, they can get puffed up and become arrogant and prideful. It’s a service to them to call them by their name or ‘Mr. So and So’ to keep them humble and for them to be reminded they they are no greater than the sheep they are watching over. They are a brother of the sheep, not their lord and master, not their teacher, but only a watcher/caretaker.
