In my opinion, the best part about this game is the fact it DOESN’T take place in the Western Front. The developers knew that side of the war was done to death, so they made the brilliant decision to only cover the Pacific Theatre and the Eastern Front, which are less familiar, had more vile and atrocious conditions and were fought with extremely-motivated soldiers. This allowed World at War to be MUCH more memorable and unique than any other COD or WW2 FPS and, as a result, it is easily in the top ten best FPS games of all time.

The first 3 minutes of this game are better than the entirety of COD:WW2 and BF:V combined... How is it that in the nearly twelve years since this game's release, not one other game has ever made a genuine attempt at a real WW2 story? This game is proof you don't need hollywood style characters and over the top action to be awesome. For the first five fucking minutes of Vendetta you don't even fight enemies, Reznov just talks to you while you sneak through the ruins of Stalingrad, and yet that's still more engaging than the entire story of WW2 or BF:V Not to mention the cutscenes... Not one cutscene actually revolves around the characters themselves, because the game knows they are unimportant compared to the actual story they are telling. Reznov and Roebuck are awesome, but they're really just voices to narrate the feelings of actual men who fought in these battles, Reznov's need for revenge after seeing his country burned and comrades massacred in particular is a pretty good narrative tool to show just how angry and bloodthirsty the Red Army was after Stalingrad.

I really like how this into just gives a quick nod to the German conquest of Europe, but then shifts its attention to Asia. Like the devs were saying "Yeah you know this already, let's see what's happening over here." It's easy to forget how brutally Japan behaved in China, and I also applaud this game for having the guts to show footage of Japanese soldiers burying alive Chinese captives. It also does a great job showing how formidable the US was, with its sheer amount of industry and manpower to use.

Mistakes and inaccuracies in this intro - Japan didn't invade Indochina in 1937, they invaded CHINA in 1937. The Japanese didn't invade Indochina until 1940 and Southeast Asia in 1941, the latter was around the same time as the attack on Pearl Harbor. I guess the intro makers were like "Oh, there's this thing that's called Indochina. I guess that means all of the China." But Indochina means the mainland Southeast Asia that have the mix of Indian and Chinese cultures. That's why it's called Indochina - The 50 star flag. The US used 48 star flag in WW2. Alaska and Hawaii didn't join the union until 1959. Minor oversight. - The Zeroes didn't use green camouflage until Model 22 which weren't used until after Midway. Probably budget reason because we didn't see Zeroes in the game until 1944. So the animators probably re-used the assets from the game. - Zeroes didn't use fuselage mounted 250 kg bomb until Model 52. Zeroes used two 60 kg bombs mounted on both wings until 22 Kou model. For reasons see above. - Tanks and self-propelled grenades. I guess if we say "Self-propelled grenade", it probably refers to the modern RPG, which the term of anti-tank grenade launcher or Rocket propelled grenade weren't used until the very first (failed) RPG-1. Or it's the rifle grenade, which weren't called self-propelled grenade as well as they're commonly referred to just "Rifle grenade". But I think in this case they probably means the bazooka or the tank shells. Both of which WERE NOT called self-propelled grenades. The bazooka were seen as more of anti-tank rockets, while tank shells are called tank ammunitions to this day. - Private Miller is a marine as we see that he was a part of the Carson's Raiders (Which were never captured at all. They all went in all at the same time.) But here it says 34th Infantry Division, which is a division in the Army and didn't see combat in the pacific front at all. Miller probably was meant to be a soldier, but I guess they changed him to a marine because of the Makin raid mission and it's "Cooler".

World at War was always my favorite call of duty game. As a kid, it was my favorite because of how fun some of the missions were like Black Cats and Blood and Iron. Now as an adult, it's my favorite because of the atmosphere. World at War did something that no other call of duty did to this day: portray how brutal war really is instead of glorifying it like many other video games. Not only in the game but even in the title screen it's dark and eerie along with music that sounds like it came from Freddie Kruger. I also love the fact that they use real footage from the war from both sides just to show how brutal everyone from all sides were. I also love the fact that they showed the after effects of the war such as the "thousand yard stare." There is no glory in war. It's just something they tell soldiers so they risk their lives.

I really do love this intro. It is awesome. But, the history nerd in me can't help but cringe everytime I see "Indochina 1937". Japan invaded Indochina (modern day Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) in September 1940. In 1937 they were invading China (not the same place). Still, great intro and an even greater FPS historical shooter. Truly the best in the series. Edit: I also love the fact that this game does not go the route of other WW2 media depictions and pretend that Japanese war crimes don't exist. It's rather refreshing.
