She met both of them when they were still babies (Kitten respectively, puppy) and her motherly instincts kicked in. She effectively raised Howie and Duck. Watch the videos of these times. She treated both of them as if they were her own pups. Steve is different, as he is a fully grown (though small) adult dog. Plus he is jealous as well. She considers Tim to be her man, especially now that she is in heat (Coyotes bond for life, coyote packs are, like wolf packs, made up from a pair of parents and their adolescent offspring. The children will eventually leave the pack, find a mate and start their own packs). So now she doesn't just have Itty Bitty as a rival (she can smell that Itty Bitty is female), but also Steve as an intruder.

That's one of the ways you introduce rats. Rats are fairly territorial so even if they seem like they love having a group of friends they still need to be introduced slowly or you will most likely have a bloodbath. He should maybe take a blanket or something that Steve has laid on and put it on her couch or do like I have seen on "My cat from Hell" and have Steve wear a wool ball collar and then put the collar on Weave so she gets used to his smell. I think they'll get used to each other soon enough.
@mygirldarby
4 ай бұрын
Yes, they should have first been introduced on neutral ground and then kept strictly apart, either with fencing or crating so they can see each other but can't get near each other. Over several days they will start getting used to each other. Then they can slowly get closer. I wouldn't let them get near each other for at least a week. That's a good idea to feed them while they are close, but can't get at one another.

Maybe try and keep Schteeve and Weave apart for a bit. Set up baby gates or something similar so Weave can adjust to his smell and his presence. Normally it's best to introduce canines to each other on neutral territory so no one feels defensive over their turf, but obviously that's not possible with Weave. She's trying to intimidate him because she thinks he's going to take over her house her pack etc. She's stressed and he's very nervous. I think if you force them to be together when they are both on edge there's going to be a fight and it might not end well for Schteeve. I think she'll mellow with time. Your house is her second den so she's going to be extra amped up there with an intruder around. Later on try having the two of them hang out further from the house.

A suggestion: ✨Maybe Itty Bitty could try introducing Steve more gradually in a place in which he feels safer, for very short time slots, and give them both treats and use a softer encouraging tone of voice....and Tim could stand by Weave instead of close to Steve. Do all this slowly over a period of time till either one no longer sees the other as a threat, and associates each other's presence with nice pleasant things like yummy treats. Might take some days. It's important to always make their meetings feel pleasant and calm. Always praise the good behaviour and treat, and immediately stop the session and don't praise or comfort or reward if Weave or Steve start to get aggressive towards each other. Don't spank or shout at them. Removal of treats will be enough I'd imagine.🌷All the best👍

Having her go through heat at this point is cruel in my eyes. She could get ganged up on out there & that would be the end for her. The reason Weave came to Tim in the first place was because she couldn’t assert herself within any pack. She might be dominant at home but out there in the wild she’s got no ticker.

@suicune8576 I understand. He was unneutered. My husky, while larger than my corgi, is still very much a puppy. He takes the crying a little too far. Huskies are very vocal. My corgi was cuing in on the crying. My husky needs to learn how to stand up for himself just a bit. The point is that the reaction of the corgi is a visceral reaction to the crying. Rooted in the deep brain of the canine. It's hard to train out. Coyotes have a primal urge to kill what they view as competitors. Occasionally, they do it with raccoons and small dogs. They kill them not as prey but to remove them. They do it fast. They snatch them up by the neck, give them a quick shake, and that is all it takes. This behavior is natural to Weave. That was the point of my remark. But thank you for your impertinent training tips and the misunderstanding that my husky was a young puppy. 👊

Just remember that Steve's just a boy in human terms and he's got an adult being aggressive if not violent towards him. It's important for them to become socialised, but don't traumatize him in the process. I would be much more comfortable if you had Steve in your arms than on the ground with her towering over him. I don't think leashing *her* is reasonable (some people suggested it), but even if you were sitting on the ground while holding him, it would give you more control over the situation (being able to protect Steve if need be) and also give him the comfort *he* probably needs throughout the ordeal. Some people said stuff about not petting weave when she's being like that, and they might be right- I'm not sure how non-domestic animals respond to reinforcement, but that's what this might be getting interpreted as. I don't agree with a smack on the nose if she's being mean, but don't be afraid to raise your voice at her so that she receives clearer information from you. Sharp and loud ack or ah, like the "uh" in "uh, no" are better. (I'm sure letter accents exist to convey this better, i just don't know them). Either way, try to be clear and consistent in the messages you want to convey to both of them; Steve shouldn't have to feel *as* afraid (even if he is in danger), and weave shouldn't be thinking she's allowed to nip at him (which is exactly what wolves do before going for the throat of a dog on a chain, by the way). ..Actually, all that said, think of a scale of escalation. If you're saying "no" to her for being growly, you need to be able to escalate if she does. Even a clap of your hands when you see her going in for something physical might be enough- but it also might not be. You definitely don't want her grabbing him and running off - and i know that's not something you want to consider, but keep it in the back of your mind just in case. She's beautiful, but wild, and Steve is potentially just a snack to her, and not a "threat to the family group" like people keep saying. She might not even see him as that, yet. Anyway, sorry for all that text; just some food for thought. Thank you for your videos, and for somehow making us genuinely care about a coyote half way across the world. She's almost family for all of us, too! 🙏

Brace yourself for the 'wilder' side of things to predominate. I see something hormonal going on, and twisted as it may seem, 'Steve' is competition or a hurdle between Duck and her. It may pass in a few weeks, just as likely it won't. She's maturing into what she is. Be prepared to intervene when things get really out of hand. Duck's loyalties might yet be tested. Sorry to be a downer, but I clearly sense she means real harm to Steve, and I'm not sure he has the druthers to fight on her level. She's not a pet, she's a sometimes friendly (and loveable) Coyote. Be prepared to fight on Steve's behalf, and petting her when she attacks him is being read by her as your siding with her. Be prepared to give her a good smack, or it might end up worse. I know enough about wild animals and dogs (including a Wolf-hybrid) to read the signals.

I have to add, and I'm really torn on this....a solution might well be to have her 'spayed'. A lot depends on whether you want to keep her, or keep Steve. If Steve's hormonal state was the issue, it would show in his relationship with Dak. I'm sorry, but the 'order of things' has been upset. It's wonder enough that Duck is not laying 'territorial claim' to Weave. And thank God for that. The yard would be bloody. And Weave has a 'brotherly' equilibrium with Dak. You'd know if it was otherwise. That order has been upset. Something has to give, she's very unlikely to accept Steve, and you won't be able to let him run loose like Duck does.

I agree with a lot you said. But I don't agree with hitting her and I do agree she is not feeling poor Steve at all. Definitely a tough situation. I think it's a bad time to introduce another animal right now because she is going through changes right now and this change or "heat" is new to her, if she is not pregnant already she will be soon and then she'll be super territorial and when it comes to pups the momma coyote will become very serious.

You are completely correct. Tim is trying to treat this Coyote as if its a domesticated house pet. She's not a domesticated house pet. She's a Coyote who is part of his family unit. SHE IS A COYOTE. NOT A FAMILY DOG. They have a lot of traits that dogs have, but the way they behave in the unit is extremely defensive and territorial. Tim is handling this completely wrong and I hate to say it, he's acting in a manner that is down right dangerous to weave.

@fckintrash.- She would have to be darted and taken under anesthesia. Probably would not find a veterinarian to do it. Open season on coyotes there. All year. Poor Weave. Poor Tim. It's a tough situation. If she's preggers she will be really bad. 😞 Idk if they stay in heat when they're preggers or not.

You won't ever see her be spayed. What vet would see her, and how do you think he would get her there? Tim has only made friends with her and she keeps coming "home" because she knows Tim will feed her. She's not a dog, and SHE allows Tim and the family to be friends. After Duck being gone for so long, when he was dog-napped, they had to re-establish "boundaries". That's what will happen here. We raised coyotes when I was a kid. Several of them. They got older and naturally went "wild". I've still got pictures of them. One of the 1st ones we had would come in the house in the morning and wake me up for school by yanking me out of bed by my ponytail. It's going to be a process with little Steve but it will end with acceptance. Until or if she gets pregnant, he probably won't see her again. She might not get pregnant either. If no males accept her Tim will still be home. If so, guess he will deal with it.😊

Steve seems to want to be friends with Weave, since he lets her get close and smell him (despite the fact that she'll nip his tail each time). Both Weave and Howie will need time to get used to Steve, and Steve is going to need to accept that he's behind the cat in the hierarchy 🤣

Weave is jealous of Steve. Weave sure loves her Daddy. I find it so amazing a Coyote is this tame. Around my parts, Coyotes are much bigger than Weave. I have always feared them because I know so many people who have lost their pets to coyotes.
