Must have been a military position. So, what's really down there that they have banned the world from exploring?
@craigcampbell1843
2 жыл бұрын
@@hogleg2 no one is banned from going to Antarctica. You can book a cruise to go there but it’s probably not cheap and you will be limited to where you can go for environmental reasons and because ships can only get so close to certain areas because of sea ice. They just have a lot of rules and don’t want people traipsing around doing whatever they want while they’re there because it can be extremely dangerous with the weather and crevasses and because it’s so important to preserve the environment there. It’s known as the Antarctic treaty. Mostly what’s down there is a lot of ice and scientific research. NASA has a huge facility there. It’s the coldest driest place on earth so they test new equipment for space exploration there. They research Pangea. Global warming. The ozone layer etc. when I was there they had discovered a huge lake a mile under the ice and were trying to figure out how to explore what was down there without destroying anything. Lots of stuff going on down there. A surprising amount of wildlife too. Seals. Penguins. Whales. There’s an active volcano called Mount Erebus. What got me the most was the beauty and the complete silence.
@craigcampbell1843
2 жыл бұрын
@@hogleg2 if you want to experience life at the US facility, Mcmurdo, on Ross Island you can apply to work there for six month stints and live in the dorms. You can also walk to the New Zealand facility from there and see big C130s land and take off from the ice. There are KZitem videos documenting life in Mcmurdo if you want to see what that would be like. You can see Scott’s Hut down by the pier which is the site of an expedition in the early 1900s. If you want to see what it’s like to go there as a tourist, the Kara and Nate KZitem channel recently went there on a cruise and did a whole series on that experience.

@@craigcampbell1843 thanks for the info. I just find it strange that it's the only continent you're not free to explore. Admiral Byrd claimed a land beyond the ice bigger than America.
@craigcampbell1843
2 жыл бұрын
@@hogleg2 as I said, you are free to go. You just have to follow the rules of the Antarctic treaty that a number of different countries have agreed upon in order to preserve the environment and work together in their scientific research of the area. It’s for the greater good. I don’t know a better way to explain it. There used to be nuclear reactors down there and other things but everyone realized that the research and environment there can be used to help the whole world so they agreed upon terms to protect it. No different really than a state or national park. You can’t just walk in and do whatever you want but you can go there and experience it in the ways agreed upon.
