I needed a break, a break from my busy life, a break from my usual landscape photography subjects. In this episode, I wanted to take a long exposure, so I headed to Fifty Point Beach for a sunrise with a filter kit, and some colourful dreams.
Long exposure photography is a technique that can necessitate a lot of gear, but at a minimum, you need a sturdy tripod and a Neutral Density (ND) Filter. These 2 tools will allow you to use your regular photographic techniques to extend your shutter speed and take a long exposure.
However, if you want to REALLY setup up your game, what you really need to do first is change your subjec, find something that will benefit from a long shutter speed, and second visualize the end result and make a plan to capture it.
I find, water, fast moving clouds, and strong sunrise / sunset colors are the best combination. High contrast subjects that can livi within a milky flowing water are typically my go to.
As you continue to learn more about long exposures, you will find some of the more advance topics, graduated filters, color cast correction, using an intervalometer or bulb timer all make their way into your vocabulary.
Good luck out there, thanks for watching,
- Nick
