Why don’t you stand you springing cows on the feed pad under a roof with some feed when it’s raining?
@TheOnceADayFarmer

Couple of reasons, but mainly because I don’t like calving under there, I’ve done it before and the calves get covered in poo and possibly trampled. So wasn’t a big fan. And The effluent system on the feed pad isn’t really big enough for standing them off over night I did put the late mob on it the other day with some hay but, hopefully this summer we can sort it out.

Awesome video as always Andrew. That’s some udder on no22, she’s must be very close to giving birth. That’s a massive amount of rain your friend had on his farm. That’s something you don’t need at this moment in time. Your dad seems chuffed with the new wheels, bet you can’t keep him out of it haha. You guys look pretty chilled at the moment, hope it remains that way my friend. Thanks for sharing mate.

Calving seems to be a smooth as silk...no problems at all. Land that gets badly mucked up and the grass returns relatively soon is truly a gift.

You haven't tagged your R2s because Allflex is inundated with tag orders ? That's my issue, haven't tagged mine for that reason, looks like farmers left their orders late this year. great video, look forward to the next, calving is exciting isn't it

Great video as always Andrew, also great tip about how to get calved cows out. I'm assuming that you have water at both ends of paddock for that to work

Where are you going to get time to make videos in a few weeks when you get real busy. Very interesting how you get through calving on your farm. We'd be looking at calving cameras at night as cows inddprs for Jan Feb calving season. Very labour efficient with your system.
@TheOnceADayFarmer

I’ll find time, it’s the editing that takes a while at night. Yep our systems down here are very labour efficient, we pretty much have to be so when the payouts low we don’t go backwards

@@TheOnceADayFarmer fair play. We do Try and get cows straight to grass after calving but Irish wet springs can be very tricky thus have to spend money on indoor facilities. Slurry etc. Which adds cost and labour. We do kale some years for young stock for outdoor wintering on dry land.. We can learn more from yee in nz. On kepting it simple. I've considering oad next year as labour on dairy farms here are very scarse and costly. I your opinion are Jersey the ideal cow for oad. It's hard to make the jump but with oad would suit my farm and family life.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
3 жыл бұрын
Totally different climate down here aye, we just don’t get the rain like you do. Yes In my opinion I think jerseys are really well suited for OAD, but I think that the kiwi cross wouldn’t be bad either. If you can make it work OAD is awesome, surely it would be easier to find labour not having to milk in the afternoon 🤷 and it frees up so much time to do other things 👍

@@TheOnceADayFarmer with the type of cow we have I'm nervous about making the jump. Traditional Irish fresian good milk yield but a grass cow. They say only way to find out is to try it out they say. Have a bit of kiwi and Jersey cross but not much. No labour is very hard to find. Alot of best young dairy lads head over to you to nz to milk and get experience.
@TheOnceADayFarmer

Yeah you won’t know till you try, it’s whether you want a better lifestyle but can afford to produce a bit less. I have know idea how Friesians would go on OAD. Fair enough, good to get away from home for a bit and experience different farming systems aye
