I know this video is old but, I’m just coming across it. Dude have the switch installed wrong. The switch goes on top of the mounting bracket not under it, that’s why it won’t tighten up, and the car wouldn’t start because it wasn’t adjusted and locked in place. The threads are in the mounting bracket not the switch.. this is just a FYI for whoever come across this video.

What can happen on these cars is that the ignition is NOT connecting with the rod inside the steering section...so that needs to be re engaged. You have to drop the wheel from the dash to get to the rod, which connects to the switch at the BOTTOM of the steering collum (sp) under the hood. For some reason only known to God, that is where they put the engagement switch! Sheesh! So, no, you do not usually need a new starter at all...just the rod needs to be hitting the switch when you turn the key.

Glad you got it fixed. That clicking that you was hearing from the driver side area of the engine bay was relays clicking.

I have a 1988 Pontiac firebird. looks very similar to your vehicle. When I turn the key on headlights pop out radio works just fine but wont start. New battery starter cable tight. I have decided that Im going to change safety switch. Does the console have to come out?

Mine is doing the exact same thing It was driving fine the only issue the starter was going out so I change the starter and it keeps doing the same thing but the car was running great no issues just started came home parked two days later went to turn it on and now it does the same thing as yours.

mine would do that about every other month. I just hook up a charger, only for a second and it fires right up. Replaced the starter relay and it was burnt. Might want to check that. Behind drivers kick panel. Costs about 20 bucks

Hi, if the starter makes a click when you try to start it, then it's either a bad or low battery or the starter might be bad. Could be other things too like VATS if your car has it. If you hear no click from the starter then I say it could be the neutral safety switch or VATS.

I have found also another problem... there is a black cable/wire coming off the ignition going under the floorboard and it may get loose. If this happens and gets loose the ignition will not turn all the way, I figured this out while looking at the ignition assymbally while trying to start it and i saw that it was loose, so i put some pressure on the cable and the ignition would will pull back and tension would come back. this was a huge problem for me I tested and replaced everything having to do with the ignition only to find out it was only a loose cable. hope this helps somebody in the future.

I have a 89 Camaro RS Had the same problim when I put a 350 in it! Turned out their is a little wire junction box to the right of the battery, It was so corroded it wasnt getting power to everythig! I took it out cleaned the wires installed a new junction! Problim solved!

Check the ignition section....the rod may not be engaging the switch. those wear down after time...like now after 30 years:) Just a thought. Mine did!

Who told you to replace the Neutral saftey switch..? Yes, as TheDesipaki said, it could be the ignition module,if the ignition module is faulty, the starter won't receive power. Easy way to test the ignition module, turn your headlights on and turn the key to run, if the headlights dim, the ignition module is good, if they do not dim, the module is most likely dead. Check the 3 wires that are fastend to the starter motor solenoid, easy to access, make sure their all snug.

Did you get to the heart of the problem? My 89 5.7 does same thing, temp gauge goes full on when key flicked forward but go to start and nothing, not even click from starter, maybe small click from relay but that's It. Fuel pump kicks in for couple seconds all interior, ext accessories work fine and batt full charge What mine started doing before this condition was it would start to backfire and lose power under load to where I would finally just Auto all the way down and die. Had to have it towed home and it hasn't started since. I really hate this goddamn car but I love it.

I'm having the same problem with my 91 Z28. It will start up but will not turn on after I've been running it for a while. the temp gauge says the engine isn't over heated nor do I see signs of it being so, all electronics work but the engine won't turn over. any ideas of what it would be? +Andreas Nyh Mine did that and it was the distributer. The distributer sends a signal back to the ecm, which sends a grounding signal to the injectors. The injectors stay hot.

I have a different problem that someone may know the answer to. The power coming into my fuel pump relay is low. When cold It will crank over but not start. So I stop and crank it again and it will start. However, if I jump power from my battery to the fuel pump lead it will start right up, then I can unhook the extra power and the car runs fine. It has a new fuel pump relay and a new oil pressure sending unit.

I have an 89 irco . When I turn the key on I don't hear the fuel pump kick on. It has a new fuel pump, new fuel relay , new fuse. I can run a hot wire to the pump and I can hear it run but thats the only way. The car had been sitting I would start it once a month and than one day it would not start up. And I don't know where to look next. Any help would be appreciated.

No. I am thinking of having someone come out and check the key chip. It may have gone bad. If thats not it than I will probably just junk the car. Spent too much money on it and don't want to spend any more.

There is an in-line fuse for the fuel pump close to the battery. Follow the positive terminal wire and you should see what looks like an electrical connection point with no wire on the other side of it. This is a cap, you remove the cap and a fuse is inside it. Replace the fuse if it's blown and that should solve your fuel pump issue. If not, considering what you've already checked it may be a short or grounding issue.

does the car crank when you turn the key? the "chip" is a resistor. it doesn't go bad, what happens is there is a wire that runs from the vats module up the steering column and into the lock cylinder where it reads the resistance value on the key. the wires that touch the key break over time. the official fix is to replace the lock cylinder. but the quick fix is reading the resistance on the key and sticking a resistor(or multiple in line) into the connector on the column which bypasses the key's resistor.

I would say most newer Camaro have a anta thif system in it or something alike that may be you need to look at your ingiosn switch or bad wire somewhere I'm not sure when that startedant thrif in maybe around 1986 on up

When I drive my 92 z28 for long distances and turn it off, it won't start again. I hear a clicking though. Starter is good, battery is good. My theory is the headers are giving off too much heat to the starter, expanding the solenoid and getting it stuck. Sometimes she turns on, other times I hit the starter with a hammer while someone turns the key and vroom vroom

+D.A.W.G.s I always suggest wrapping the headers. Don't make it any hotter under the hood than necessary. You can ruin the starter

I thought about what dalton suggests but i ended up doing da wrapping to da starter n worked great. Had da same issue years back with my 87 mc ss and did da samething after wrapping up headers first. Figured out wrapping da starter turn more affective n cheaper..

If none of that works then you probably need to replace your starter. Don't check for fuel pressure or spark yet, theres no point, those have nothing do do with the starter not engaging.
