What do people go to Cambodia to see? Of course, they go to see the Anghor Wat temples in Siem Reap city, but they cannot avoid facing the country's bad past.
Cambodia has a history that amazes me and is hard to understand. What happened in that past still haunts the people of the country today. There are as many mines in the country with a population of 40 million, and those mines still continue to kill or maim people. The people I see on the street either experienced or witnessed the genocide that took place in 1975. One out of every four people has an arm or leg amputated or blinded by mines. In the capital Phom Penh, I first go to see the killing fields of the Khmer Khemers.
So who are the Khmer Rouge?

The founder and leader of the movement is Pol Pot Pol Pot They are responsible for the Cambodian genocide that resulted in the death of approximately 2 million people.

Khmer Rouge Killing Fields
There are more than 20,000 places where mass murder was committed across the country. In total, about 2 million people are said to have died as a result of torture, starvation and disease. When those who died during the civil war are added to this figure, the number exceeds 3 million.
Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Khmer, knew no bounds in carnage. To conserve ammo, executions were carried out using poison, with large knives or sharpened bamboo sticks.
In various parts of the country, knives, wooden sticks, hoes, bent rakes, and skulls of victims killed with these tools are found as evidence. Even children were killed by executioners by hitting their heads on rain tree stumps and thrown into a pit next to their parents. The aim here is to prevent children from avenging their parents when they grow up. Some victims were asked to dig their own graves. Those who were executed were buried in these mass graves. In this killing field, I see the skulls of the victims, their clothes, and places where children are executed, such as the execution tree. The sullenness on my face ossifies, I leave with the feeling of pain stuck in my throat and my heart clenched. This killing field was just one of thousands, many of them untouched…
When my Cambodia trip was over, I had indescribable emotional turmoil. The country, which has no trace of its glorious past, is today among the poorest countries in the world. I can't get out of my head what Cambodians are going through. But still, Cambodia is a country worth visiting.
