“Look at the Owl” or “Sat Tee Touy” is a traditional fable of the Khmer people of Cambodia and Thailand, and, until recently, much of it was shrouded in mystery. From the cassette album “Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk and Pop Music Vol. 1”, this recording is the only I’ve ever heard and likely one of the few existing. Though probably recorded in the late 1980s by the Khmer folk musician Darkie, people curiously (but also kind of understandably) associate the song with Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, which ruled Cambodia during the prior decade. This is indeed entirely apocryphal though, as this style of music is “Kantrum”-it only took hold in Khmer communities in Thailand and only developed its electric/techno themes during the 80s, after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. As I said, much of the information about the song itself has been elusive. People commonly believe the artist to be unknown and its lyrics have been for years, despite some believing that a fake transcription which praises Pol Pot and compares him to the titular owl is real. To the contrary, the actual lyrics never even mention an owl and while those in-the-know have known it to be a rather rambling song about animals, it wasn’t until the end of September of this year that KZitem creator S Netzach would upload its actual lyrics, using a transcript by KZitem user F. Tee (which has since been updated, and is what I used in my video). All credit goes to them for opening the gates to end this minor but deep historical music mystery. Here is the link to the original video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l4R4q5itqWl8goI There is one final question relating to this song, however, that I wish to answer: what do the actual lyrics mean? In writing the English subtitles for my video and comparing Google’s translations to the lyrics on S Netzach’s video, I realized that despite various Reddit threads and KZitem comments from both years past and present, this song doesn’t ramble at all and, in fact, tells a definite narrative with an embedded, rather heartwarming moral: A company of rabbits sell various medicines, but a gang of frogs and lizards come along and steal some of their goods, in particular marijuana. One of them, a black-furred and black-eyed hare (mistranslated as “hair” or “head”) who indulges in alcohol, laments the wrong done to him by cursing one of the frogs’ mother. Meanwhile, a doe rushes to find her “master” (which I interpret to mean mate/buck) and buries her glass of wine along the way (which I believe implies she was saving it for later, hence the lines about her already being full). The black rabbit loses his way in the midst of the rain mentioned in the line about cursing, and the rain creates a stream which uncovers the buried wine, which he finds. The moral, from my interpretation, is something similar to the dualism of yin and yang: the world has a way of balancing the bad with the good and vice versa. The rabbit, though being wronged and getting lost, through that journey of hardship discovered something he enjoyed; the wine was even spilled for him to drink. The deer, being well-fed and having a partner, lost her wine. The frog, though getting what he desired in stealing the cannabis, in turn lost honor as the rabbit cursed his mother. Of course, this is my personal understanding of the story from my attempted polishing of the English lyrics. They will be further polished by others who know Khmer much better than I do, but I hope this sufficiently solves the final mystery of “Look at the Owl”. Please enjoy.
