I saw Camel in 1974 when they toured with the "Mirage" album. They were great to say the least one of my favorite concert nights of all time, Andy Latimer and Peter Bardens were phenomenal. They were backing up Wishbone Ash that toured with "Live Dates". A fantastic evening at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.

"Once he wore grey, he fell and slipped away from everybody's sight." I hate prog rock, but I love Camel, especially the song where they open up the soda can. " behold gatamoth, son of Brendoshyle. One of Camel’s most famous songs, this nine minute prog rock classic is split into three parts, and is based around the character of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings novels. The song makes use of multiple time signatures, utilizing a slow, ethereal approach at the beginning before transforming into a fast-paced Moog-driven second part. The mood of the song then reverts to the pace of the beginning for the third part, before closing in a haze of Moog and Andrew Latimer guitar work. Lyrics- When he rides, my fears subside For darkness turns once more to light Through the skies, his white horse flies To find a land beyond the night Once he wore grey, he fell and slipped away From everybody's sight The wizard of them all, came back from his fall This time wearing white He has a certain air, as if he's never there But somehow far away And though he seems afar, like a distant star His warmth he can convey

I want you all to try something. This will be as close to a live concert by CAMEL as you’re gonna get. If you have two phones use them both to play this tune. Doesn’t matter if they’re old or new as long as they have good speakers. So play this video on one phone and play the same on the other phone a split second later. Turn off the lights, lay down and place the phones on both sides of your head a few inches away from your ears. Relax and enjoy the live-like sound and a brilliant natural high. NO DRUGS NEEDED.

Nimrodel (Nim - white; rod - little cave; el ~ lady, or something like that) is the river on the borders of Lothlorien where the Fellowship rested for the first time after the death of Gandalf in the deep of Khazad-dûm. It is also the name of the lady that dwelt there ages ago. In this song I feel like the stories of these two characters are mingled in their grief. It encapsulates the beauty and tragedy of the lores, making us experience the feelings that must have been felt by Frodo and the other hobbits at that moment.

This is far from future for their time, far, far away. No wonder why camel stayed as "indie". I don't know too much about their personal life and situations with big recording companies etc, but I guess, it was Camel members who choose to be not famous. I wonder if they thought that just like other bands, money would destroy their original music, then decided to not fallow the path... Can someone give me a small explanation about this topic? What was the reason behind this? Were they not talented as others in their time or they simply couldn't/wouldnt't sold themselves?

It's not a good answer, I mean: Camel have (had) a sound of their own which is recognisable at first listening
@gaycha6589
5 жыл бұрын
Simple answer is that they were signed to Decca (Deram) Records who were shite at marketing and promoting new acts. My dad worked fir A&M records in 1974 when this was released. He knew the Decca rep. Decca were better suited to marketing classical music. No sex and drugs and rock n roll for them. Alas for Camel, by time they realised that they had little commercial support following Snow Goose, the punk era was upon us, making Camel look rather dated. I had pleasure of watching them perform Snow Goose on release at Torquay Town Hall. They were great. But the Punks were coming.......and the rest is history. I still love the Mirage and Snow Goose Lps. Great pieces of work
@gliddofglood
4 жыл бұрын
@@gaycha6589 In my view they somewhat lost their way and became increasingly jazzy. I don't know why. For example, Rain Dances isn't a patch on Mirage - too soft and slow. Andy Ward was an amazing drummer who injected real excitement into the tunes, as on this track. The original line up was the best, but I don't think I ever saw it. Ferguson had shuffled off by the time I saw their Rain Dances tour.

I saw them open for Wishbone Ash and Kiss in San Diego. I left after their set. Awesome band. They played several nights at La Paloma Theater in Encinitas a few years after and have always had a big following in San Diego County. The commenter above me is correct, I think. Had A&M had them, it may have been different. On the other hand, A&M had Strawbs and where did that go? They were never going to be blockbusters, but they lost their way after Moonmadness, IMHO.
