Funny how the SUV is now more popular than ever, yet events like the Camel Trophy no longer exist. Something like this needs to come back with manufacturers competing for top honours of most capable off-roader.

These aren't SUVs. These are tried and tested rugged old Land Rovers. These can get you anywhere. Unlike the Kia Sportage or the Jeep Renegade that can't go over a speed hump

Unfortunately the Land Rover is not built nearly as well as it used to be nowadays you’re lucky to keep them on the road for six months without something breaking specially electronics it’s a shame such a great vehicle turned into a yuppie wagon

@@davidsortore8636 i’m a big lr fan but I cant agree with you on the good build quality of em back in the day. We owned a few defenders, all from different generations and christ they had problems. We had a weak spot for them so just kept on repairing and repairing but to be honest they are huge moneypits lol. I remember the doors not closing properly, always ac water on the passenger side floor, oil leaks, steering noises.

I had a 1995 Discovery 1 Tdi, 295,000km, two broken manual transmissions, 1x broken transfer case, all wheel bearings, cardan shafts, oil leaks again and again, cooler, water in the interior and rust. The engine was great! It was very good for off-roading and easy to repair. But eventually...🤮

I don't own a 1998 300tdi discovery with 285000km's. It's my daily and never let me down. Offcourse I need to work on it sometimes, but he never leaved me stranded.

The market has moved away from the camel trophy days. Today’s “men” are so thoroughly feminized, they aren’t interested in tough off road vehicles. They want sat nav, lane departure warning systems, vehicle stability control, and back up cameras.

This was the greatest marketing ever. I was a kid in the 1990's and knew very little about cars, but had seen a quick take of couple minutes of this in the news... and remembered it forever- that the Discovery was the greatest off road vehicle and one must buy a Land Rover. I would honestly buy a Camel Trophy built Land Rover at the dealer, new, exactly as shown on the Camel Trophy.

My buddy recently bought a real 98 camel trophy defender 110 ----It looks really cool, and he will use it for minor 4x4 (fishing trips) back country use, --- (he has another rover for off road bashing) ---- but it is great to see these vehicles still out there and being driven :^)

I remember watching the 1989 Trophy and thinking it was the best thing I'd ever seen. Watching these again now was like watching the decline of LR and the watering down of the challenges. It was all a bit sad really!

I had a 300 tdi Discovery (M REG) bought it new, no power lot's of smoke, Main dealer could not fix it after at least 8 attempts over 3 years, warranty expired so had to fix it myself, I blocked off the EGR valve and knocked the guts out of the catalytic converter it then ran faultlessly, kept it for 15 years.

I used to own a Rover and as much as I loved the looks, interior quality and off road capability, it was in the shop once every month. Sometimes for as long as 2 weeks.

The key to owning one is to find a good yoda LR mechanic to know what he's doing. That equals less time in the shop in my experience with these. The older ones such as the '70 88 I owned could fix it all myself. Less electronics too fail the better.

Lifting your trucks in order to fit large tires won't help you here. Even the stock Land Rovers with their low center of gravity rolled over in some situations so your lifted trucks will lay on their roofs half the time :P Also you can't just increase track width to tackle this problem, the tracks are too narrow to do so. Awesome driving but Landrover should have stopped earlier, 1997 and 1998 just aren't as impressive as before.

Yeah despite freelander has a new suspension it is just not match to the older versions of land rover models such as discovery and defender even range rovers ... it has very low clearance and it more like a road jeep I was sad back then when they introduced freeLander they kinda ruined themselves in my eyes. Still wanna get defender 90 :)

There is a saying in Chinese, walking ten thousand miles is much better than reading ten thousand books. Of course reading is important, but getting out there and experience it yourself is what will stay with you. People talk down on you because deep down they are jealous that they couldn't do the same as you. Don't let the naysayers influence you! This will be your journey of life, be safe and be smart. I'm see why land rover pulled away; the trophy event got away from the original idea and added bikes, canoes, and pointless obstacles...

Douglas, those rovers are still available, im all for it bro. I want to do a multi continent expedition. stating in Yukon Alaska and ending in the Yucatan

Douglas Anderson they tried, the G4 comp, however, just after they started it the Great Recession hit, and they halted their car destroying exploration mission

No wonder why the trophy went down the drain. It was and should have stayed a ofroad race. Biking canoing and what the Heck was that all about. Dependable ? Probably not at all but it was fun to see the whole thing exept the last parts wich I skipped through fairly quick. Kinda looked like normal winter driving in Norway :)

Admiramos este evento es lo maximo en su tipo siempre estamos pendientes de admirar eta obra de srte en cuestion de su aventura y desde luego mi reconocimiento alos reporteros que cubren estos eventos waaaauuu gracias
