I see a lot of people saying Nikon can do this with Snapbridge. I have double and triple checked this with Nikon prior to making the video. You can transfer files while shooting over Bluetooth but only a 2 mega pixel jpeg, not the full-res jepg. You can after the fact pull down a full res file but not at the time of shooting for auto transfer. I will keep you updated if I find out otherwise.

I shoot weddings so I investigated using the Canon camera connect app as a backup. The problem is I don't leave my camera on all day long. Camera connect doesn't automatically reconnect when you turn your camera on, after you make a call, change a battery... I came to the conclusion using this feature as a backup was not practical for weddings. Will work for very controlled situations.

In my case, the best solution i've found for events like weddings or for studio photography, plus wildlife photography, and very cheap solution with great results, was to buy a Canon 40D with the WFT-E3 wireless transmitter, which it has usb and ethernet port on it. For outdoors or for places that you can't have an ipad or laptop with you, you just connect a usb memory stick with same memory capacity as the card's one. This works as a second card slot as you save any picture jpeg or raw in real time in both the card and the stick. I'm always using that when shooting for clients. The ethernet port is an amazing feature, as you can connect a very long (even 50m long) cable from the camera to your pc/laptop, etc and you can transfer jpeg or raw files, straight to any device (in way less time than wireless), without loosing connection etc and also you can save the pictures to the card if you want. You can find an almost brand new Canon 40D for about $150 and the wireless transmitter for about the same price. So, with $300 you have a totally professional setup for any occasion and it works always flawlessly.

@S Tra well I'm not a millionaire like you to spend my fortune for a brand new camera and I found that the 40d works perfectly for me and better than newer cameras, using the wft E3 on it. Anything else you say, is just pointless.

I have been photographing since 2019 and haven't had a card just fail but I recently had my card in card reader in computer and the usb connection on that ubs slot is slightly "loose?" And during transfer it lost connection and corrupted the whole sd card, thankfully they were just pictures for hobby but I went to a friends wedding and took a buch of pictures that were on there n now guess what there gone now, so if I would have had 2 card I could have realized the issue and not used that usb slot for the 2nd card but now its gone or I can maybe see if i can mail it to some company to retrieve which im sure wont be cheap. Bottom line would be nice if manufactures would make more cameras with 2 card slots. Thankfully when I was the photographer for a different friends wedding I took 3 or 4 cards and swapped throughout the day so in case there was an issue I had most of it and thankfully had no issues. I also have in the past had flash drives and micro sd cards fail so redundancy is never a bad thing.
@kevinwang7894

The odds of a card failure doesn't matter, it's a safety feature. As long as it's possible it's nice to have. Like a seatbelt; just because the odds of you being in a car accident is miniscule doesn't mean lower end car models should stop installing seatbelts. Ofc a card failure isn't a life threatening issue, but the logic is the same, especially for working professionals. And just because there is a second card slot doesn't mean you NEED to fill it, so hobbyists who can't care less can still stick with single card. It's simply a matter of why wouldn't you at least offer the option. Sure, these models are probably targeted more towards hobbyists, and they want people to spend more money on their more expensive models. But I personally think that these are basic basic features that all cameras should include. Even if you're just a hobbyist, losing all photos from a family trip still isn't fun. Again, it's optional, so it's not really hurting anyone other than Canon's profit (which is probably the only reason why there isn't a second slot on these models).

CR3 files are not JPG files. CR3 has lossy compression like JPG but they have a higher bit depth so you should get more DR out of them and be able to do some more editing on them before they turn to mush in comparison to JPGs. So not RAW but better than just JPG. Correct me if I am wrong Canon users, I am just recalling info I read when the file came out for the M50.

Brother Bear Canon told us it lists the file format that your camera is set to (which in our case was CR3 Raw), but actually only transfers the jpg version of that file if you’re set to auto transfer in Canon Connect. Thanks for sharing this. I've been using and talking about this technique for a while in certain forums, but also have been using Lightroom CC watch the Camera Roll for auto import to CC into the Cloud. While I typically use this for Art Directors and other remote reviews, and not technically as a backup, I have often forced it to transfer the smallest JPEG for speed. I am surprised to learn that the .cr3 file is actually a JPEG however since in my experience, it functions very much like a RAW file in LightroomCC. To force the CR3 transfer, I believe you have to make the camera take only RAW or cRAW with no JPEG on the card. I think it transfers the RAW in that case. I've only tested this with the latest iPad Pro, however, so the RAW support may be hardware or iOS specific. The iPad version of the Canon Connect app is different than the Phone one so this might also explain why my files look so much like raw.

Love your other videos so I won't give this video a "thumbs down," but the subject of this video is ridiculous. Ridiculous because you SHOOT RAW.

@@stepheneckert4006 I guess. You have to install an FTP server on your iphone, but I can not recommend any cause I'm and android user. Sorry

Unfortunately EOS R has been crippled and doesn't have FTP client.

Maybe you can use a dedicated iPod Touch. It would be like a small wifi ssd??

I never understood why Nikon or Canon or eve Sony won't put a on camera memory in addition to the memory card. Like the Mavic 2 that has an internal memory, They can put like 256GB internal memory and even 1 card slot, but in any case you have plenty of space to save both.

I think you can transfer raw files. Just make sure you only select raw as when you shoot and not raw and jpeg. The image that will be transferred is raw. I think. It's been awhile since I test this cause I shoot jpegs only.

At a glance I thought there was some kind of grip on your camera with a second card slot, and then it got me thinking... That should totally be a thing. One grip, double batteries, double cards. They could do it with the card placement on the RP, too, just have an SD shaped appendage sticking off the grip next to the battery shaped wang. Hire me, canon. I just designed a $500 grip that people might probably buy.

Nice video but useless for wedding. I really don't understand why Canon don't listen us... I stop buying Canon cameras because i'm waiting for a EOS R with 2 slot cards... still using 2 5D Mark 3...

Guys, I am missing the Auto transfer option. Is it because my phone is Android or something else?

That grip design is kind of "terrible". It doesnt look like it belongs on the R at all.

This method is not reliable and does not replace a second card slot. This video was pointless and only useful for those Canon / Nikon mirrorless shooters who don’t read the manual or dont see the need for a second card slot anyway.

What about using a laptop with an external hard drive for more storage instead of ipad or phone.
@cooloox

Yes, you can do that if you carry a lightweight laptop around with you. It's especially useful if you happen to usually do your editing on that laptop anyway.

If the battery life the same as the Mark IV this a bad idea. My battery die quick just using WiFi. I can only imagine using both WiFi and Bluetooth. Which btw is required for the auto transfers.

Yes, you can wirelessly send images on the fly (as you're taking them) to a laptop using Digital Photo Professional and there may be several alternative programs.

Been using the WiFi option on my ‘umble Canon SX60hs. Great for throwing from iPad Air2 onto my SONY BRAVIA via house APPLE TV. SHOT to SCREEN in minutes. No need for the SD Upload dodatery. Toodles from London. Luvin’ your channel. Great funster.

they could try to put an sd slot into the grip. not everyone would need it but thoose who do would benefit from it and also have more battery life. perfect for wedding photographer. or at least put a micro sd slot into the camera. maybe it doesn't look very professional but still better then just 1 slot.

Beniyov when I saw the (then) rumored grip extension for the Canon EOS RP, I thought that maybe there was a chance it was a SD card slot on it because otherwise what was the point? Well. I was wrong and the point was simply a grip extension. 🤷🏻♂️
