As always, very informative video Simon! I've recenty been getting into creative cinematography and creative visual teqnuiqies, and this really helped me touch down on the basic fundamentals of creative camera movement. In a short action sketch/sequence I am going to do later this Summer, the character has to figure out how to escape enemy lines. I think that once he finds the solution, (which is a cardboard box...), I'll have a dolly in on him. Thanks for the tips! -Ilya

Hello fellow cinematographers and storytellers! I am in need of upgrading my camera. My current camera is a Nikon d3200. I've used this for a few years but have reach a bottleneck in my use of it because of the poor high ISO performance and the camera heating up to a point where it has to cool down because of how hot it is getting and is not usable for a few minutes. This has almost ruined getting the shots I need. This is not a good thing because lately I've been doing a lot of events. (i.e. weddings, plays, sports, etc) Missing moments in these events can be detrimental to the end product and since I'm getting paid that is a no no. Anyway can you guys give me any suggestions on what to switch to? I do alot of both videography and photography so it can't be like a Cannon C100 or a camcorder. (Besides that would be too expensive.) And also no Sony a7s. Not spending $2500+ on just a camera at this point. Anyway ya, so good high ISO performance and preferably full frame. (I grow tired of this crop-sensor bull.) And possibly shoots 4k but that would just be future proofing and yes I know the GH4 exists. Thank you!

You're better off buying the adobe suite which includes premiere and after effects since it's what the professionals use. It's $50 per month with free updates. You might want to consider buying a prime lens of around 20mm with the lowest F number you can afford for cinematic depth of field. Another issue could be the colour correction. If you want cinematic videos you need to colour them which can be done in premiere and AE. And other queries I'm happy to help.

@DSLRguide

TrueGamerX14 it really depends on the context - a dolly in doesn't always intensify.. dolly out could be for a character leaving - any kind of sadness could work. To be honest I really don't know - i'd recommend that you watch a bunch of movies and look out for times when they use a dolly out.

I have a quick question, what do you think is the most essential (i use the term lightly) piece of gear? A jib or a slider. I have a camera, lenses, audio equipment, a good tripod, a shoulder rig, lighting, and I'm looking at getting one or the other. I don't have a project that uses one more than the other, I need either of them to complete the vision of the screenplay, but I don't know which one to get. I could simulate small jib shots with the slider but I could simulate slider shots with the jib. Any input?
@DSLRguide
9 жыл бұрын
+ArrKayCee Definitely slider - you'll likely find that you use it more often than the jib. However, even more essential would be actors, locations, props etc. These are the things that we often don't bother paying for because we've bought too much gear. Just a thought :)
@ArrKayCee
9 жыл бұрын
DSLRguide I can afford all of those when the time comes, I'm working with a group called the Santa Cruz Reporatory and they can supply actors and help me get locations for cheaper or free. Props are one thing but I don't know exactly what I'll need yet

You're better off learning storytelling and emotion rather than having a better camera. That being said, you should only upgrade if you think it is necessary to have better low light or a smaller depth of field. Honestly I think you'd be better off buying a good lens rather than a new camera.

Depending on your budget, a simple a5100 is a good starting point at $350, then you can go up to a G7, which will give you 4K (very sharp, high resolution) images at $600. Top beginner would be the a6300 which has good low light and is the sharpest camera at $1.2K With any camera, you would be good buying a soft box kit since good lighting is essential - Be sure to get one with a high CRI rating (over 90 is good) so that the colours look nice.
