#2 from 'Le répertoire des demoiselles', Op.5 (1820)
-------------------------------------
Phillip Sear plays a piece from a set of 12 'musical sketches' by the French composer and music publisher Camille Pleyel (1788-1855).
-------------------------------------
"Camille Pleyel inherited not only his father, Ignaz's last name, but also his musical talent. While not as prolific a composer as Ignaz, Camille shone as a virtuoso pianist. He toured Europe, impressing audiences with his skill, and even earned the praise of Chopin, who considered him a master interpreter of Mozart.
Following in his family's footsteps, Camille became a partner in the renowned Pleyel piano company in 1815, taking full ownership upon his father's death in 1831. A savvy businessman, Camille not only ensured the continued success of the company but also fostered a vibrant artistic scene around it. He established the Salle Pleyel concert hall, which became a prestigious platform for musicians, including Chopin who performed his first and last Parisian concerts there. Pleyel's commitment to excellence not only benefitted his company but also enriched the musical landscape of 19th century France." (Gemini, 16/6/24).
This short piece comes from a set of fourteen pieces designed for young women with small hands. Joachim Raff wrote a similar set many years later.
