This is incredible. A quick Google search will take you to an article by The Strad that was reporting on this discovery, providing strong evidence that this is indeed played by Paganini's only pupil, Camillo Sivori. I would love to hear this digitally remastered with noise reduction software, which is extremely powerful today. It's the closest thing we have to actually hearing PAGANINI himself. Even though Sivori recorded it in his old age, this recording is still of great historical importance.

Yes, with the appropriate skills and technology, it would be possible to completely pitch stabilise it, remove a good portion of the noise and have it ending up quite close to a very early 78. That said, I have to be brutally honest here - if we really could hear Paganini I think we would be disappointed on an objective level yet astounded on an historical level. It is for that reason I am very glad we cannot hear Paganini himself. I want the God-like illusion remain in my head as it has for fifty years now. It is the same reason I would refuse an offer to drive an E30 BMW M3 - my expectations and hopes are at odds with the reality!!

This is a version with heavy noise reduction and other things applied. I do not think pitch correction though. It would destroy any meaning of this recording. Modern tempered pitch was not used on the violin until around 1900. About hearing Paganini himself. I think we would be surprised. It would not be what we might think. But saying we would be disappointed is fro me like saying the copies af a greek/roman statue or painting a of a Master is better than the original. And that is almost never true. I often find that these old recordings says more than many modern ones

@@larshenrikrn4105 The versions of the cylinders you are hearing were done around 2005, with noise reduction to make them more listenable to the general public. They have since been remastered with state of the art equipment.

Sivori or not, this is an important recording in many ways because it is so early.. For instance I can hear that Fritz Kreislers interpretation of the concerto is close to this. If it is Sivori Then it it confirms a lot about Paginins style of playing. Even more so because it quite clear what you hear

@@marcvilleneuve1889 I can tell you to me this is not bad playing. This is the old style of playing. Sivori was btw not the greatest violinist of his day. But he represented the legacy of Paganini

@@larshenrikrn4105 nothing in common with Paganini... I am sure not Sivori playing. There is no credible evidence at all. Sarasate was contemporary, Ysaie...there are recordings...never they would play in such a vulgar manner

It’s exceedingly difficult to imagine this being authentic. Sivori died in 1894 and the recording industry was in its infancy to say the very least. The recording, although clearly aged, still has way too much clarity for the time which is sad because the playing would have benefited from way less clarity.

These were wrongly attributed to Wilhelm but recently discovered they were not by him but Sivori but I agree with you about the dates.

When was this recording made? Is the pitch corrected? Normally with older recordings (especially early 1900s) the pitch rises. Sometimes even as much as a whole step higher. This recording doesn’t feature this rise in pitch. I definitely agree that the recording has a bit too much clarity to be 1890s or earlier

No. Paganini also taught Ciandelli--but Ciandelli was an obscure cellist, unlike Sivori the famous and acclaimed violinist.

Not Sivori, not Wilhemny, for sure. Amateur violinist... Great violinists during that era like Sarasate ( evidence with recordings) would never give such a performance. This is just a parody...
