Welcome back to the first "Will it camp?" episode of 2024!
In this episode, we take a stock standard 4x2 Ford Ranger to Balie's Gat for a night of camping. Despite only being 4x2, it still has a diff-lock for when the terrain becomes tricky. It has some good General Grabber A/T tires. As for packing space... it is a double cab bakkie with a canopy, so it has enough packing space for all our camping gear.
It was my first time to Balie's Gat and it was a pleasant stay. The pass you have to traverse down was really unexpected but yet so beautiful. The campsite below has lush green grass to camp on and each plot has its own ablutions. On the farm, there are multiple rockpools which can be used for a relaxing swim and cool-off session when the temperatures get hot.
The aim of this episode is to prove that a 4x2 vehicle will be able to get you to most public campsites in South Africa. It has good ground clearance and in bad conditions, deflate your tires and use the diff-lock, where needed. I've seen 4x2 vehicles conquer major obstacles if used in the right way. Unless you are participating in a 4x4 event or going extreme off-grid wild camping in the worst conditions, then a 4x2 will easily get you out into the bush and enjoying nature.
