Campione d'Italia is an Italian “enclave” of just under one square kilometer, in Swiss territory, at the halfway mark between the border of Ponte Chiasso and Lugano. A strip of Italy on foreign soil with ancient origins, dating back to the donation Longobard landowner, Totone, made to the abbots of Sant’Ambrogio of Milano in 777.
This little piece of Italian land, within the Swiss borders, is home to Europe's largest casino, which employs most of the town's residents.
Campione d'Italia has a special treatment within the EU. As you already know EU has a special system of VAT (value-added tax) that needs to be charged on all goods and services. Well, Campione used to be exempt from VAT, and this town is also outside of the EU customs union.
But is Campione completely tax-free? Can you take advantage of setting yourself up in this small enclave? Let's take a look!
