Solid video. I installed a new set of cam bearings into my 302. Sadly my Cam won't spin freely by hand. It will however spin freely with the timing chain sprocket slightly attached. The Cam is used and sat in an engine block for a number of years. I may have to bite the bullet and get a new Cam and valve springs.

Great videos! I have a chance to get a 69 Mustang with a 302 from a relative. But I'm told it is seized up. Should I stay away from that or give it a try? I notice most of the engines you do are not locked up. Just wondering if a seized engine is worth tearing into?

I got a question to pick your brain pertaining to the thrust plate for the cam. What is a better setup for a roller cam in a roller block, the OE plate or an aftermarket plate such as Comps 3120TB thrust plate with bearings?

I just installed a new melling cam into my 302. It does not spin freely and is stuck in the block. Can not figure out what the problem is. Any advice?

Would the install on a roller cam from an 87 Mustang be the same process? What lube should you use for the roller cam?

Camshaft install done well. I assume this is a new cam so where did this cam come from and what are the specs on it? Also I am wondering if new cam bearings were installed or were they good enough? Either way good vid. Shows a good demo of a home installation.

its a new cam and I pressed in new bearings. I did not show the bearing bit in this because most people have a machine shop do it. I also made my own drivers because each cam bearing is actually a different size believe it or not. hence the simplicity of the cam install unlike the FE engines. I NEVER REUSE CAM BEARINGS. just bad practice. not a good rebuild.

ThunderHead289 Cool. I didn't mean to insinuate that you would reuse cam bearings. Sorry for that. I agree 100% and the perfectionist in me has never allowed me to reuse most any part that gets wear like that. You appear to be a very tedious person and that usually makes for a great engine builder and I mean that as a compliment as I tend to be the same way. Again good job on the install.

awesome series. Did you have machining done on your block/heads as part of this rebuild? What determines that? Did you check all the vital specs when you tore it down to decide if machining was needed? thanks!

I did indeed! I'm pretty sure on the playlist where I go through and hone the block, I show the tolerances. Also, I did have the crank polished .001 under I believe. Didn't work the heads over outside of lapping the valves. Guides showed minimal wear. I don't remember as this was awhile back, but I think I showed how I checked valve guide play

ahh ok! I musta missed that- I'll go look for it. But the point is, there will always be some machining required (assuming you want to do things right) and specs/tolerances will determine how much, I guess.Thanks again!

+Kelly Trosper you are indeed correct. I always polish the crank at the minimum. Lap the valves, and check the ring clearance. Too much and it has to be bored, needs a valve job, and so on

Are you sure the oil groove goes towards the cam, and not facing out to the back of the cam gear?

TH289.........Love your videos. I have a new 351 Windsor and I have a 2500 RPM Stall Covertor and a Xtreme energy Comp Cam Hydraulic lifter type in My 69 Mach 1....with a 600 Holly. Problems: 1. Misfires at cold crank 2. diesels when shutting off 3. wants to stall in slow traffic and at red lights. I have to pop it in N to keep it running and the RPMs go through the roof and jerk the car when I put it back in gear. Any ideas??? I believe these issues are all related, but not sure

+Skip Barrus skip, you are correct in assuming that your issues are related. lets go back to carb basics, it seems as though you have your throttle plates open a bit too far and are exposing too much transfer slot. leads to run on, poor performance, and so on. also sounds like why you might rev to the moon. so here we go, set your carb to where only a square of the transfer slots are exposed. set your mix screws to 2-1/4 turns out. now, adjust your timing for the idle rpm you want. this should get you close. you want no more than 1200 rpm in park, so tune for this. ideally idle would be 1000 or so, and when put in gear, it drops back to 800. a few more things. heat is not your friend and causes performance issues with you carb. a half inch 4 hole carb spacer goes a long way. also, you may not have enough octane fuel just anyway. im linking you to a page i send people when they have these issues, set your carb right, and then look this over. basically the same as what i tell others to do as well. www.badasscars.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=94/category_id=13/mode=prod/prd94.htm

+ThunderHead289 You're not going to believe what I discovered. The Vacuum line from the vacuum advance to the carb was placed on the bottom front port of the carb from the garage install...I reinstalled it to the upper port later on. I did't relaize the size of those two port were different, and the hose fit snug on the lower one, but was way to loose on the upper port...causing a vacuum leak all this time. I discovered it today and put on a smaller hose on the upper port...giving me 100% vacuum. Runs like it's suppose to now. Hope this holds.

Regarding the 302 engine you are rebuilding: Is it a "Boss"? What is the difference between Boss and "regular"? How do I know if my 69 Mustang's engine is the Boss or not? Thanks!
@ThunderHead289
7 жыл бұрын
I believe the boss is a 4 volt main and some other bits that made it what it is. With the aftermarket world, engines can be built that are far superior in performance to the original boss. This one in particular is a standard 302 that could be in a car/truck

I recently bought a 302 from a 88 gt 5.0 that I'm guna out in my 1966 mustang I want to put a cam and I saw in another video that the cam shaft pin is specific for fuel injected and I'm guessing carbureted..so what I'm wondering is that true you said to make sure the right one is installed that it comes with several so would I just do what you did and out the same size in or would it be different the engine was fuel injected and I'm switching it to carbureted any help would be great thanks in advanced
@ThunderHead289
9 жыл бұрын
luciano hernandez its usually the shorter one! it depends on what type of oil slinger bolts onto the front of the timing chain. i would say to try the shortest one first. it wont go to the end of the timing chain cam gear since that semi left over hole os for the slinger. now if your running a mechanical fuel pump timing cover and a mechanical pump, you will need the longer pump for the fuel pump offset lob that bolts to the cam gear. does this make sense?
@lucianohernandez3468
9 жыл бұрын
Ya I get what your saying about the mechanical pump I forgot to say that since the engine was fuel injected I'm going to use a electric fuel pump that il mount under my tank so would I still do what you said and try the smaller one? And thank you for responding I appreciate it
@ThunderHead289

I have a 87 302 and I'm puting a lunati voodoo 268/276 cam and 515/525 on intake and exhaust with a 110 LSA and it came with all the valve springs and everything. I'm porting and having heads done, will I have plenty of valve Clearence?

That's fairly aggressive. It's best to clay it up to test clearance. Definitely will need to be careful if you run larger valves
