I have a xTool D1 laser and one of the main uses I’ve found for it is cutting inlays. I absolutely love it. The method I’ve used most is to use the laser to cut cavity area and filling that in with epoxy mixed with mica powder for color.

Late to the party... I'm REALLY excited about the potential to create wood inlay *easily*... so much so that I just purchased the Ortur LM3. But, I got to thinking more about it... your inlays, the ones you have done by your own hands are so incredible - and there's a reason for that. Each individual piece is obviously planned for (grain direction, figure) to bring out the true magic when the pieces are brough together (check out drifwood's other inlay videos). I GUESS you could get to that level of detail with individual piece selection with a machine, which would be much more time consuming... but at which point is the juice not worth the squeeze? I'm stoked to see how my inlays turn out with my new laser cutter, but right now, as cool as that sounds, there's just something downright SPECIAL about hand-crafted art that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I hope to get that same feeling ✌

Excellent excellent fellas! Miss y'all. I do use my CNC for my inlay, the dots and my letter M with an .023 bit. Works pretty good in abalone, but I don't think it will do more when I get into your type of detailed inlays! I do use my laser to cut my back and top out oversized, and I also run a light tracing where all my bracing goes for glue up on the back and top. Don't have a template yet for that. Hello guys, lovely work as always.. I use CNC and laser on most of my works and designs on lutes, however here is a nice tip with this kind of machine, try using some kind of raiser (honeycomb is best) under the piece u r cutting, it will reduce the burn effect dramatically and also find the sweet spot (of each species of wood and thickness must be considered) between the speed of the laser head and laser intensity. You can reach to that very minimal burn effect on the edges. Thank you for all the nice videos.

If you are looking to do fine marquetry in veneers on a diode, you should look into FAC (Fast Axis Collimation) as a feature on the laser module because it changes the beam shape from a grain of rice to approximately a square, allowing you to use a half kerf width offset to get things really really tight. A typical Co2 laser has very close to a round spot, but with a diode the beam shape becomes critical once you get down to the .1mm -.2mm zone.
