That "Induction" cooker is a great idea to heat the bearings up ,and it heats the bearing perfectly, Lance.

G Day Daryl, Yes it does the job well. A warning though, I set it to flat out and blued the edge of a bearing while playing after the video so just on low from now on. lol.

I use one of the low buck skillets and just lay the bearing on it and set it to 250F. It works good, no smoke no oil, just conduction.

GREAT TIP - Wrap your bearing up with damp shop rag & make sure to cover all the metal & put the bearing in the microwave for a minute & a half and remove carefully it will be hot & it will slip right on

Tried this out at work. Do not do this unless you want to fry the bearing/gear. It heats up fine... The part directly touching the cooktop at least. The temperature differential between the top and bottom was huge. Bottom of the gear got too hot and turned blue. Bearing was the same but worse. The cage, the only spot that made direct contact heated up quickly but the rest stayed cool. Ruined the bearing. The industrial bearing heaters may cost $4k but they won't run bearings as they heat from all directions. Either purchase one of those or use a deep fryer unless you want to have to replace parts.

I have gone back to my chip cooker, you do need to be careful but this was just to see if it would work. I think putting the bearing in a liquid to transfer the heat is safer.

My infrared thermometer has problems reporting the correct temperature of shiny things. It looks a lot like the one you have. I would try a mercury or a bimetal thermometer as a check on the accuracy.

@@Happymacer True. The temperature guns are calibrated for surfaces with an emissivity near 1 (like your black tape will have). A polished metal surface could have an emissivity of near 0.05 - so the reading will be a LOT less than how hot it really is. A big clue in the video is the oil in/on the bearing smoking - that does not happen until it gets to to 150C or so (at a guess - depends on the oil), but the display only showed 68C! Whether it was the raceway or the cage that was getting overheated will affect how long that bearing lasts in service!

Hate those IR temp guns. Terribly inaccurate. Most people treat them as the gospel and have no idea just how bad they are.

You could try setting the bearing on a metal plate to see if the temps are more uniform. Thanks

Seems to work with all of the induction cook tops even the one I paid 5 quid for at a car boot sale. Haven't tried the Meile one in the Kitchen though, walls have eyes and ears you know...

Good one Lance been waiting for you to do this for a long time . The SKF induction heater I remember seeing was 2 pedestals about 6" high 16" between centres with a 1" square bar between the pedestals. Slip the bearing over the square bar I may remember wrong but i thought it then only heated the inner ring . { circa 1998 } How about 2 v block on the induction heater with a round rod between the v block with the bearing hanging between maybe worth a try

I think the chip cooker is the go, I think the cage is going to heat at a faster rate then the rest of the bearing. Interesting experiment tho mate

you could use a metal plate to sit the bearing on to heat the bearing rather than heat the bearing directly should heat up more evenly

dont think it would work on aluminium engine cases (moped motorcycle ) unless you lay a metal plate on the cooker and lay the engine cases on that use a hotplate so the aluminium expands to let the bearings fall out
