I used to buy cheaper new models instead of older flagships until I bought a galaxy s7 in 2017 (around 1+ year after it came out). None of the cheap models I had bought lasted as much or remained in such a good condition, but my s7 still works great, which is why I went with a Samsung flagship again. And frankly the only reason I switched was bc I wanted more storage/better gaming performance and to be able to use the spen. If I were a more casual user I could see myself continuing to use the s7 as my main device.

A 2017 Flagship and my dads budget galaxy phone which stop getting updates since 2017 can still download the latest and greatest apps like new. Apple actually sucks when it comes to software updates because ince support is gone, apps become “unsupported.” My ipad mini 2 is borderline useless. I have a 90hz refresh rate display, iPhone doesn't. I have fast charging that doesn't heat my phone up to what feels like 50 degrees in your hand, with a charger I got in the box along with the phone mind you, also, expandable storage that iPhones don't have, oh and I also don't have to buy my own usb-c - aux dongle when I already paid a grand for my phone. No notch, in screen fingerprint reader and face unlock. iOS is the only thing that is ever so slightly better than android, but it also loses out to android in customisability, no third party apps, very few, almost featureless widgets that you can't place anywhere on the screen as they snap back into place at the top. Maybe, just maybe, you can argue that the top of the line iPhone 12 Pro Max can compete with both software and hardware, but you'd be paying double the price I paid for my phone and still have to pay extra for dongles and charging bricks lmao

There is a 3rd option, buying new old stock from 3rd party online retailers. I did this a few years ago with my LG G4. The G5 just launched and some retailers had to clear out old stock. I got the phone for quite a bit cheaper than its original listed price. In South Africa, our mobile operators even offer previous gen flagship phones on a 2 year contract at reduced prices...Sometimes even at the same price as current gen mid range devices... Which means you can get a new previous gen phone without the battery degradation and with a warranty included. The fact that you get it on contract means that you can choose between new previous gen or current midrange and still stay within your monthly budget. You will also have the added bonus of getting a data plan with your device, which is sometimes a nice added bonus.

Reasonable, and well thought through. I typically buy my phones phone during black Friday, or some 'after christmas' sale, just prior to new releases - because it's fairly easy to find very good deal on what soon will be 'last generation' hardware. For my parents though, I tend to recommend a new 'A-series' Samsung, because they've had Samsungs before and thus know their UI, and use some of their default apps. For whatever reason, the A-series Samsung phones seldom go on decent sale anyways, so I tend to get whatever is the newest that provide good value.

Anything isn't perfect to be made fully or totally impressive. There has been always a lapsed. Android at present has matured so much to the point that most necessary features are already in the os. Only very few negligible /gimmic features are being added just for the sake of adding features. And dont even get started on security please. So why does it matter to have latest software??? Mental peace propably.....😊

One thing you missed, Arun: Older flagships, historically, are also facing an impending end to their OS updates. If you buy an older flagship, you could have only months or weeks of software updates left before it's completely cut off altogether. Brand new midrange phones have a full lifetime of software updates ahead of them.
@neutatamayo8365

also, I'd say battery life counts for 2 points. Putting them at a draw. Why? because what's the use of a phone thats dead in the water? What's the use of a premium feel if you can't make an emergency call? In my mind there is only 2 options. Save up for a modern flagship phone or get a midranger that is prepped for the problems seen in the generations of phones before it.

Still keeping a Samsung S7 as a spare and switch to it every now and then. That phone still holds up in my opinion. With good apps and a little knowledge in photography you can get almost equally good pictures. Root and fix battery issues. Lighter, smaller phone, with premium features. And headphone jack. What happened to that?

@@jamiel0985 so far i love the wiko view 2 go. its a 120 euro phone. at first it looks like shit just a big screen but 5000mah battery. it can last nearly a whole day gaming. and best of all at 15% battery it auto goes into this low power setting. i cannot find this anywhere on my a30 :(

@@jamiel0985 How's your camera performance? I'm using the S10+ exynos version and I felt like when the phone was brand new, it was great but now after all the new updates it became crap and the focusing on the camera is so terrible and overcolorised the photos I take as well. Battery life ain't that good and the fingerprint sensor is not very sensitive, I should have just kept my S9+ I felt it was more premium and still lasted really well but I sold it to buy the S10+.

@@steph3255 So far the camera has been fine. Battery life is only average but I carry a small wireless power bank around so I can live with that. Had no problems with the fingerprint scanner at all, it's been 100% accurate for me. I guess everyone has different experiences with a phone. Hopefully they'll update the camera app and make it better for you soon.

I'm still using the Mate 20 pro. Still as good as the day I bought it! I am supposed to be "upgrading" now, but this phone is only slightly less spec wise, than the S21. I've gone sim only, as I'm not spending £950 on a phone that's only very slightly ahead of mine 🤷♂️

Most people probably think that galaxy Note 9 captures night mode photos a lot slower than Galaxy A71 but it's mostly because it has 4% battery so it captured a lot slower to last battery for a lot longer like almost all of the phones do...
