Totally convinced. I have a 2024 fish pro trophy with 11 hours and was on the fence about changing the oil. Great info. Oil kit gets here tomorrow. Thanks for the great info.

You said change it after 10 hours on a "high performance" machine.... Does this apply to my new Spark Trixx (2 new ones still in break in period)?
@watercraftjournal

No, the Trixx is NOT a high performance machine.

Great content Kevin. Currently we can see the longer service intervals in manual for all the engines or only jet ski but also cars. It is not because of the engine or oil development but pseudoecology. My car have interval of oil change every 25 k miles but I am changing it every 7,5 k miles. In my Yamaha I have changed oil after 8 hours and I am going to change oil and filter 2 times a year after the seasoning and just before. My yearly hour are going to be max 40. Changing the oil earlier will just help you to maintain the engine in good condition.

Interesting but there is a great deal to be said for modern synthetic blends, better additives and superior engine efficiencies. Modern engines better regulate internal temperatures, lessen frictions and pass through better micron filters. This particular suggestion is correlated directly to the sensitive and contaminating nature of the inferior nickel plating that coats the 300 ACE engine cylinders. XPS is a quality oil for sure, but the initial break-in process can quickly contaminate this oil within an hour or two of operation (particularly during “full load” after the 5 hour retuned map is lifted).

@@watercraftjournal in case of seadoo you are probably right. I don’t know much about their engine but I know many cases from automotive industry that aluminum engine with just a nickel coatin eg NIKASIL for Vw and Audi and BMW is a pain in the …. Those engines won’t last more then 100kkm if not serviced properly. In case of oil maintenance I can speak just for Europ maybe in US it is better. How you would explain that even in instruction manual of one of the car manufacturer it is written. EU service interval 30kkm but outside of the EU ( international) the interval is 15 Kkm. Please see manual on page 272 if you do not believe. www.opel.ie/content/dam/opel/ireland/owners/owner-manuals-20-20-5/OM_Astra_MY20_ID-OASKOBSE1910-en_22.pdf

I wasn't aware that VX, Audi and BMW were using nickel-plated cylinders as well! YIKES! And no, I cannot explain the Kkm difference! Insane!

Do you use break in oil for a new supercharged rotax 1503 for my sea doo challenger 215 and if so what's your recommendation on brand and type of break in oil it or is it just the regular oil and filter change at 10 hours

I’d change oil after break in regardless. 5-10 hours on new machine. Oil change then you’ll be sure. It’s old school engine builder mindset.

What does 'high-performance' mean? Is it just supercharge or can it include NA's?

High performance is primarily towards supercharged machines.

Kevin, how thick is the plating? Can these engines be bored ever?
@watercraftjournal
2 жыл бұрын
Those are very good questions, to which I don't have answers. In Nikasil-plated motorcycle 4-stroke engines, the plating needs to be reapplied when the cylinder is bored. Every article I've read begs people to never "dingleball" hone Nikasil as it can heavily damage the surface. I'm certain there are folks here more experienced with motorcycle engines who can shed a little more light.

To be honest, no - particularly with Sea-Doo engines. The prescribed BRP oil change kit is plenty.

Sometimes users pretend to be more intelligent than engineers... if in maintenance book is written something, follow it and don't ask. There are rules that have to be followed without asking. The designer has come to the conclusion that the best way to keep a long life is that. He has studied the engine and he has built it and long life is that. No more questions to mechanics
@watercraftjournal

Certainly true, particularly in regards to maintenance. This suggestion is entirely voluntary, but errs on the side of caution more than anything.

Agreed! But also keeping in mind that todays world relies on failures to make money so like kev said manual says 50hrs but it won’t hurt to do it after 10hrs. So anything that will “help” the engine last longer is good even if it’s not specified on a book.. it’s common sense!
@DonziGT230

A break-in oil change will cost you $50 right away. Not doing it could cost thousands later. The machining on a new engine is probably clean enough to not matter much, but it could.

It would be hypocritical of me to say "follow the manual" just after publishing a video contradicting the BRP manual, so it's a little hard for me to say. Ultimately, you should be looking at the oil's color and consistency.

Yeah im calling that seadoo writer / tech / manual maker who said go first 50 hours without an oil change is a dumb A.... On my brand new 06 gixxer 1000 i changed oil at 500 1500 2500 miles just because. The oil drain plug had a magnet affixed and you would see the decline in number of Metal shavings present. And a wet clutch does not produce more metal shavings versus a 4 stroke waverunner motor.
