Shame on any Plumber that says that real Plumbers only replace things. And same for any Auto Mechanic. I do not know about a plumber but a auto mechanic that simply throws parts at a vehicle that had a problem is simply a "Parts changer" and not a mechanic that I would want to work with. The reason they do that a lot of the times is because of the money. More money to be made replacing parts in the mechanical work especially if it is a flat rate shop for labor.. Thumbs UP to you Brain......... OH hey I see that you was using the American made Stanley , I used mine last week on some plumbing and have to say that it works GREAT !

This video was priceless for me, exactly the same type of outdoor faucet. The old packing was tough but got it. The old washer was a fourth the size of the one in video. Had a washer that fit. The old faucet has been renewed. Thank you.

Fix it guy. Spot on with this video. Our house was built in 1979, Bibco bib, had to gouge out old packing, too much silicone packing on 1st attempt. I had to go back and retighten the packing nut ( didn't want to overtighten it 1st time). No doubt, had I NOT watched your video, I would have damaged the stem by not removing the old packing. 😅 Follower for life.

This video saved me. Thank you. I had an old spigot that after fixing a broken screw and gasket it was spewing worse than before. Wouldn't turn off. Turns out I was missing valve packing tape. There was none in the chamber when I took it out so must have eroded away. Added the packing and a perfect fix. Thank you again for this video.

Richard on "Ask this Old House" suggested using a few feet of teflon tape doubled over and rolled into a makeshift packing rope. I would lightly grease the valve stem where it turns inside the packing....no squeaks. Why not put some screws into that wall to hold the valve and then caulk? I agree about fixing things. I bet that Nibco will, as old as it already is, out last a crappy big box chinesium valve the plumber would have stuck in there.

I have an older outdoor water faucet that was leaking behind the handle. I looked at a few different videos, before I found this one. You were repairing the EXACT faucet that was giving me problems. After watching this, I went to a local hardware store hoping to find the parts I needed without waiting on an amazon order. When I took the faucet apart, it was missing the washer that was supposed to be holding the packing material. Then I made a second trip to the hardware store to find a washer. The back rubber washer looked worn, so I replaced that, added my washer and wrapped the packing material in place. My original problem was FIXED. I had to see your video to visualize what I needed to know. Incidentally, the new rubber washer at the back of the stem now leaks, which wasn't a previous problem. My replacement seemed too thin. I found a thicker tapered washer in the assortment I bought at the store, and I finally had complete success. It took a little thinking on my part, but your video was critical for me to know some basic information. I couldn't have figured it out on my own. Thank you very much for your great video.

The issue is when a plumber come to fix stuff in your house, the cost break down is usually 95% labor and 5 % part! Let’s say you have a old valve that is leaking, take it apart and replace a washer will save you $7.50 vs .59c. But the repair bill is still going to be $249 vs $240 and take about as long to do the job! So why wouldn’t you replace the old one and be done with it? If you are going to DIY, sure repair it with part. No issue

This is the same problem we have on both front and back frost proof faucets but they have both also been replaced with new ones (not so recently) so packing is/will be the answer. The only thing I would suggest is to smooth up the shaft where the packing will be rubbing. Leaving it rough is asking for a new leak as the packing is 'sanded' by the roughness with use.
@ThatFixItGuy

I'm hoping I can get my valve stem out. I watched another video where a guy just loosened the packing nut, which was on the outside of his faucet like mine, without removing the handle, and he was able to twist out the stem by hand. But you have given me the idea maybe I need to unscrew the handle and dig out some packing. UPDATE: I was able to get the valve stem out after being a little more aggressive with it. Unfortunately the screws that hold the handle, packing nut, and washers on each end of the stem are so corroded on this 44 year old faucet, I think there's no way I'm getting them off to do a proper repair. Looks like I'll be calling a plumber and possibly a mason as well.

I had to replace mine last year and it is fairly involved to do so . I had to go into the house cut out drywall to gain access to it and replace it . So 500 sounds about right for someone to come in and fix it . If i was building a new house I would never install one on the house . I would use the free standing frost free hose spigot from the ground outside of the house . No exterior hole in the wall , no chance of it freezing and causing catastrophic water damage to you home .

Yeah all plumbers cost a fortune for labor rate by the hour so it is cheaper to replace things then try and fix them and a lot of people would not be happy when they were charged 200 labor to just put in washers and the faucet looks the same . It is nice you are fixing things rather then just replacing whole faucet at a more reasonable price then plumbers cost . I cant believe you found a old fashioned tool my dad didn't have I never remember seeing one of those folding Stanley knives like that now i will have to get one to add to my collection of tools lol

Greg That little Stanley is an awesome knife. The sleak little design makes it such a nice utility knife for your pocket. I feel bad for my EDC because I've been rocking this knife for a while now. I totally get what your saying about customers not wanting to pay a plumbing labor charge to do a little repair job. That is a hard balance that I can see both sides of. Companies need to make money as well.

GET RID OF THESE OUTDATED JUNK FAUCETS. Replace them with 1/4 turn ball valve faucets. No o-rings and no gaskets. I replaced everyone of mine many years ago and have not had one leak or drip since. You can get ball valve faucets at any home improvement or hardware. I live in Michigan, USA. I have all outside 1/4 turn ball valve faucets and have never had a leak or a freeze problem. Old style faucets are nothing but trouble.
