@Scarker

I understand that - relativisticly - this does involve calling someone after they receive it. But there's a huge difference in that and breaking causality itself. In this example, to have the Faster Than Light signal appear to move backwards in time, you have to involve someone who's also moving Faster Than Light in the same direction as the signal - ie, away from the source and it's light cone. For that information to then influence the sender again, the FTL interceptor would have to turn around or send a similarly FTL message backward - skewing its world lines again - and could therefore not arrive within the causal range of the original sender until after they had made the call. Unidirectional causality breaks involving multiple FTL transmissions of data are weird to a world bounded by the speed of causality, but they do nothing to effect the linear sequence of events in that world. After all, what good is an FTL telephone call without the response from the other end? As soon as you introduce bidirectionality, the causal paradox evaporates. TL;DR - This still isn't time travel, the instant you try to influence the original light cone, causality is restored. It just looks weird because of all the space warping.

The return of Supervillain Kyle:) Also yes, Spinach Dip can be amazeballs. As for a phone that can call throughout time. You call with the winning lottery numbers and tell your past self to buy a ticket with those numbers. But of course if every person has a phone like that then the number may have changed same for who knows what all else. Unless of course time is linear and can't be affected. But if it isn't then various other factors will affect things. So can end up calling into an evil dimension or a dimension that lottery doesn't exist and so on.

My concern with the “ phone yourself in the past” paradox isn’t the signal traveling faster than light, or even the person in the past’s ability to receive it. It seems to me that distance problem is at least as big as the FTL transmission.

Mass Effect 2 has a device called a Quantum Entanglement Communicator. Two particles are entangled and then put in different places. By manipulating one, the other is manipulated instantaneously, regardless of distance between them. The communicator then decodes the data into an image to allow communication across the milky way between two specific points. Very cool.
@nd7042

Realistically? No... There ARE distance limitations regarding quantum entagled devices. It's all theory that includes the possible issues. For one, distance... There's a limit on distance. So communicating while on two seperate sides of the galaxy? Not going to work...

Even quantum entanglement can't transmit information FTL. It's one of the foundational principles of quantum mechanics. Mass Effect is a cool sci-fi story, for sure, but that's still not an anti-telephone nor a feasible technology that is likely to ever exist.
@EclecticFruit
3 жыл бұрын
I liked ME's QEC but it is not feasible sadly. We do not have any evidence that we can use entangled particles to transmit data. Each side is essentially looking at quantum soup as it changes itself around randomly, and therefore the changes themselves cannot carry data, to my understanding. At some level, we need our data streams to have structure in order to assign meaning.

I first heard of tachyons in the Odyssey One book series. They used tachyons to instantly scan solar systems they "transition" jumped to, since it was hours or days faster than their normal passive sensors since it didn't have to wait for the light to travel back to them, meaning anything they saw with the passive sensors was technically the past since they were so far away. Problem was that potentially enemy ships would also detect these tachyon particles and see the same thing, sort of like sonar in a submarine. They ended up eventually discovering a different sci-fi form of communication I think, but I don't recall them discussing how they would be technically calling the past. Think it would have made an already concept-dense story even more dense lol. This is so cool though, I'd heard of the concept but hadn't seen it visualized before, which makes it a lot easier to understand. Super appreciate all your videos!

Pair a phone and receiver with particles whose quantum states are entangled. Another phone is created the same way. The phones go anywhere. When a call is made, the entangled particles vibrate. The vibration is sent to the paired particle in the relay/receiver station and the particle in the second phone reacts. The two phones can now communicate instantly over vast distances, breaking the light barrier for the flow of information. Spooky action at a distance. More easily, you could put the paired particles in the two phones only, but then you would be limited to communicating exclusively between the paired phones.

Hey Kyle! There's actually a pretty interesting anime about the concept of time messaging called Steins;Gate where the main protagonist accidentally creates a machine which makes a microscopic black hole where information fed near it can be time dialated to be received at a previous time. Not exactly scientifically sound, but obviously the consequences of such things are dangerous. That all being said, there an amazing device in it that allows the main character to understand if he's in a different position within his light cone. It's a random number generator that after generating a combination of 8 numbers it locks in place. The odds of it being the same number randomly as another timeline is astronomically low, so he uses this to understand his "divergence" from his original reading of the device and acts accordingly. Or at least that's my understanding of it. Love the show dude, keep it coming!

While you showed the diagram of interception at faster than light. The diagram only demonstrates that you must know the FTL message will be sent to intercept prior to the sending. If you were to FTL transmit or travel after the point of interception. (Changing direction on the diagram. You’d still receive and return the information after it was sent. In order to break the causality, you would need instant transmission between two points in space time moving at different relativistic speeds. You need an Einstein Rosenberg bridge to intercept the message before it was sent.

Question Kyle, if something like "Tachyons" say really exists, would we be able to detect it since it travels faster than light!

Entangled particles could theoritically be paired transdimensionally (rather than interdimensionally as we feel we observed), but only one other dimension, this would allow FTL communications over vast distances, but those communications would be with a seperate universe and you therefor could not disrupt causality.

I had a thought, and maybe it's dumb, however... What if tachyons are created at the "death" of the universe? Some thing that happens at that time where physics don't work like we're used too triggers a tachyon, and from our frame of reference it goes back in time and interacts with the Singularity, another point in our universe's evolution where physics breaks down, triggering the big bang? From our perspective that would seem to fit with the theoretical behavior of breaking causality.

If you could contact your past and violate causality wouldn't that generate a blackhole? A paradox is a time loop. Space and time are connected. Time is spacelike within a blackhole so looped time outside of a blackhole is the same as looped space within a blackhole. Wouldn't forcing looped time upon regular space spontaneously generate a blackhole for the light cone of the paradoxical events? The blackhole would thus resolve the paradox for the rest of the universe.

A lot of SciFi also gets around the entire problem by introducing sub space communication (or, travel), which is likely related to the alcubierre drive. So that's at least theoretically possible :)

So I just read something about how quantum entanglement has been observed at a macroscopic level (they used 2 aluminum "drums"/things about 1/5 the width of a human hair, so pretty big for quantum physics). This, I think, bodes well for a quantum internet/quantum network (ftl communications 10:55) so hopefully we will be seeing more research on this soon. The study also looks into Heisenbergs uncertainty principle and quantum back action, and how it might not apply to quantum physics because of how they measured it. I would have to do more research on that second part, but its still very exciting to think of possible practical applications of this research. Hopefully we'll see a video about this at some point in the future

A thought I had a while back about communicating faster than light using quantum-entanglement. It’s my understanding that quantum-entanglement ignores distance and that a change in one particle instantly causes a change in its entangled partner, meaning you can predict with absolute certainty the state of that particle without looking. My idea was actually to speed up the internet. Put extremely simply, you’d quantum entangle two computers in two datacenters an ocean apart, one would be responsible for “sending” and the other “receiving”. Data would be fed to the sending computer which would then be read by the receiving computer on the other end and vice versa. The way I understand this video, quantum entanglement would basically erase the line between call and answer. There is no particle stream between the two points in time, therefore there’s nothing to intercept, it’s an instantaneous change. I’m no expert, and I’m sure the relatively basic understanding I had and have of quantum mechanics doesn’t quite cut it for my explanation to work out, but I do think it’s something to consider

Homestuck's trollian; where you had the option to see and choose any point on the person's timeline to message them. Note.: that includes starting chats with your future/past self or group chats where multiples of you might join at the same... time...? In the chat is more linked to reality than the people that uses it themselves. Things happens on it in order of causality independent of the point in time in which the user interacted with it. I imagine you could think about an interuniversal communication server.

@9:51 Thumb down, your graph clearly shows that the message is intercepted AFTER it was sent. The only way to go back in time is to have a timeline inclined downwards.

Closest thing to plausible we hypothesize to FTL is warping space itself so stuff doesn't have to travel faster...and that isn't very plausible. Unless something changes humanity might be stuck turning itself into robot people or unaging and accept the mere 1000's of years for long interstellar travel. Kind of a shame that we won't get out of the local area of the universe that way, but it would still be an accomplishment to manage it rather than killing ourselves off.
