Those are both correct. A trick for this.. ask yourself: is what you're referring to imaginary, or did it really happen? If it's an imaginary situation, use "I were". If it really happened, use "I was". Imaginary/not-true situation (like said by a woman): "If I were a boy" If you truly were a boy before (like said by old man): "when I was a boy"
