I adore the Czech version! I never thought about the Mermaid story in terms of agency, but it's spot on. It may have been about proving that anyone can attain soul or can act humanely, given a conscience and consideration. That may be why she's quiet and thoughtful in the original. The consequence of that is once you act to your own morals and vallues, you have agency. I love that Anderson had such a heartfelt view of people he might have considered incapable of making humane choices. There's so much to unpack there, that shows why some stories endure beyond time.

Interesting to see how different cultures & storytelling trads interpret the same source material. The emphasis on agency & choices, and the absence of the soul in the Czech version provides a unique perspective on the classic tale. What you said about the Disney version, particularly about the loss of agency and the OTT portrayal of certain characters, it highlights how adaptations can diverge from the original intent of the story.

Very true. The choices a producer/writer makes in their adaptation can highly influence how a whole culture thinks about a story. That she gets the prince at the end is such a massive deviation from the original story, that we can question Disney's choices on that. Thank you for your thoughtful comments!
