Sort of. Generally, An Audiophile shifts the music and creativity involved in producing musical works into the background and as secondary importance to acquiring gadgets, equipment and the latest technology upgrades. There is nothing wrong with that approach. I remember seeing an interview with a symphonic orchestra conductor in his home. The interviewer commented on his vast library and shelves of Vinyl, tapes and CD in his home. His sound system was very modest at best. He was always talking about the music, the composers and the creative process. His music library made up probably 95% of the total outlay of his listening experience. Each to their own.

it is in the word: audiophile, should not be hard to understand. love audio and we all have that in common. even with no money or gear you still an audiophile, pretty sure i was one at 12 years old listing to my parents old jamo's. but one way of telling how much people care is when they have money, do they spend on the things they like, do audio have a budget that reflects that?

@@PetraKann I don't think there's much point in trying to narrow it down to a certain type since there are all kinds. All that's necessary is to point out that an audiophile tends to want the music to sound good in addition to loving the music. I don't think the compulsive upgraders define the group, even though they probably are seen more when visiting audio tech youtube channels etc.

If you love music and want to hear it at its best - you're an audiophile. It doesn't matter if you're listening on a £300 or a £300,000 system. It's the knowledge that no system is perfect - the pursuit of 'your' perfection is where the fun lies.

I’ve been willing to trade time building my system for cost in the sense that I only spend maybe a grand and a half a year, and I constantly lurk around used marketplaces looking for what I need. It’s taken me six years to complete my setup but I’ve done it for a little over six thousand dollars and it sounds wonderful to me.

Being an audiophile is about having high performance audio equipment - not high priced audio equipment. Some snobs still don't think that a second hand Sansui receiver from the late 1970s bought second hand for $100 being tweaked to make it sound like its a $3,000 YBA integrated amp is audiophile at all. 😕

I have a room upstairs built for the purpose as a theater/music entertainment room and I barely go up there. I listen to music in my home office working or in my living room while I am doing chores, cooking in my kitchen or sitting in my favorite chair. I actually have the room upstairs to properly space speakers away from walls, the walls are tapered at the top avoiding 90 degree angles, treatments, so forth, so forth.

Sure you can get a amplifier for the price of car, but I started out all second hand. Nad C540 cd player. Marantz PM80mk2 and some Kef IQ7. Bought a rug at the thrift store and for 500 bucks I could sit down and really enjoy! Over the years I have upgraded step by step and now I have Klipsch RF5's a tube pre and some nice Class D monoblocks. Happy camper. If you are always busy you can get a very decent mobile phone dac and some great headphones for the same budget.

Can't afford not to be an audiophile

he can't afford to be a true audiophile, because he doesn't have a state of the art equipment? taking the word audiophile apart it contains "phile". philos in greek means love/friendship. therefore audiophile means love towards audio. nothing else. the passion is not connected to money. the cliché says audiophiles are snobby and rich. for that reason many people declare themselves not being audiophiles because it's almost becoming something negative. if you love audio - you care. even if you just care how you position your speakers. even with a cheap gear, you can still love audio and care. but of course with a better equipment (not necessarly expensive) you can get a better reproduction of the original sound.

Anyone that listens "in" to the music, is an audiophile. No matter the quality or the price of their equipment, they are audiophiles. Folks that just enjoy the melody, or the lyrics, without attention to the make-up of the music... I would label them more as music lovers and not so much as audiophiles. All audiophiles are music lovers. But not all music lovers are audiophiles. But if they consider themselves to be an audiophile, then they are an audiophile. There is no test or standard to be an audiophile. Audiophiles do, however, overall, tend to be interested in equipment and details about what is happening within the songs.

Maybe we need two 'areas' of audiophile, the actual person and his equipment. As in a dedicated audiophile, that unfortunately only has sub audiophile gear - as in insufficient funds etc. Or the man who had great audiophile gear, but only because he has too much money, and otherwise does not really value it, so not an audiophile.

As far as affordable "audiophile" speakers go, a good approach is building Jean Hiraga's "Le Petite"; pair them with a cheap Chinese tube amp and enjoy the music. You won't get house shaking volume levels though

I think the answer could be about the aspect of diminishing returns or 80-20 rule. What can you get for a reasonable amount of money that's pretty darn good? It may not be Paul's stuff, even the FR-5 could be too much for the guy's budget at about $3,500/pair. He has answered other questions about how speakers are the most important so what do you recommend for say $1,500/pair? And while big expensive amps give you headroom, chances are if the guy's listening to music while he works, it's a lower volume (maybe 70-75 dB?) so a big amp ain't needed for what he's doing, etc. Forget the high end cables, earthquake proof turntable, etc.

As much of an enthusiast of all things two channel and home theater, I would never call myself an audiophile since I run the risk of being criticized by a know-it-all audiophile (who may or may not be as knowledgeable as I am). I prefer to call myself an “audio video enthusiast” since it doesn’t lay claim I know everything and if I spoke to an audiophile from that perspective I can case them out better to see if they’re an a-hole or someone who truly wouldn’t mind educating me with their knowledge.
