I fell on my shoulder years ago, and broke my collar bone. Never got the help I needed, and have injured it further since. Some times more pain, and sometimes less. Right now, because of pts like you, I'm understanding what's going on, and what I can do. So much better. It may never be totally right, but I might get by with exercises and self treatment. Thank you so much.

Slight shoulder pain started appx 5 years ago while bench pressing, However, 2 yrs ago I was throwing a ball and started feeling extreme sharp pain in my shoulder and forearm. Went to an orthepedic surgeon got an MRI it revealed no tears to my RC. He gave me a cortizone shot in my forearm and shoulder. The forearm pain went away but the shoulder pain remains. I can dig down and and feel the inflammed muscle / tendon below the cluster of muscles that connects the top of my shoulder to my arm.

My husband had the same thing with weakness and minimal pain. We thought it was rotator cuff tear too. After he had the EMG test, it turned out to be neck disc impinging the nerves to the shoulder. After the MRI, it was discovered the disc was rubbing on disc. He had an insertion of small round cadaver bone placed inbetween the discs and now he can move his arm without any weakness. Explore that possibility. In order to have the procedure, weakness and pain is the criteria.

yea many people get minor injuries as they get older, especially heavy set people who sleep on their sides/shoulders most of the time, wears it down faster. A major tear usually is done through athletic injuries/accidents, while minor tears happen all the time when people get older. Plus most people don't use their shoulder muscles every day unlike legs, abdominal, etc so they are prone to injury more. Simple injuries can be fixed with a few months of stretching properly.

I too have the same pain. Been a while. ried PT and cortisone. Minimal relief. Two MRIs . one says subscap tear 4mm and solid labrum. the other said labrum tear and solid sub scap. I will try your suggestions. I was leaning toward scoping the shoulder. I only goto sports docs because i am big guy. and normal ROM tests dont indicate as im strong as hell. the most pain is when hand on opposite shoulder and i raise the elbow up. stars

At a warehouse in August I picked up big wide heavy 60lb box. I'm 5"1 so I'm short. The box I had to outstretch my arms to try to lift it. I was afraid to ask for help. I struggled to bring the box up near neck level even struggling to use my thigh to help assist. After with everything else I needed to do every box I tried to pick up after I noticed pain and my right shoulder weakening or giving out to where my left arm /shoulder had to try to compensate and hold most of the weight. My right hand or shoulder is my dominant side and my left is non dominant. Well even tho I noticed during that time I tried not to make a big deal and figured I just pulled a simple muscle. Ok so as days pass I still have the same issue. Even with other certain movements like lifting a rail up and down... Putting my arm behind my back, pulling or pushing a chair in or out, When I would put my seat belt on.... Truing to shower or comb my hair by reaching up or behind my back... Putting a coat on or clothes on.... Normal daily things I once could do with no problem suddenly became painful after the time I picked up the box I described. Whenever I would pick up something with my right hurt side and stretched my arm hand out to my side let's say with a can of water bottle compared to my left my right shoulder felt weaker than the other and has this feeling of wanting to "give out or drop". While my left arm shoulder cam move in every direction just fine my right has pain. When I sleep its worse. At the time when I reported it after days of trying to brush it off like it was something small...I got sent to clinic and they asked me how I was feeling I told them I assume I pulled a muscle. Well fast forward til now February 1st months later I still have pain a tinnnny bit less but its still there. I can no longer lift something like I used to and its more sensitive to pain and have to be even more careful then before but it doesn't take much to agitate it. Its affecting me with jobs since most warehouses lift up to at least 50lbs. Even at 20 and up I still have to watch it. I still have not got medical treatment as I'm in shockingly a financial crisis since nothing has worked out since then. I am now aware something is up. I really want my life back and shoulder back. I want to be able to lift and exercise like I used to and go to the gym and just be 100% normal again. What do I do??????

Cole Tamburelli I can relate in the sense that this injury can mess with your life. Last year I used to be in wrestling. I was the shortest in my team 4’11. One day we were doing drills and I got paired with someone significantly taller (5’5) but as skinny as me which still made me feel uneasy. I ended up getting suplexed 4 times (3 falls on the left and 1 for the right) it only took one fall to mess my right shoulder up. On the other hand the left shoulder that took 3 falls wasn’t affected until later on. I went got an x-ray then got referred to physical therapy then a check up which resulted in another x-ray by this point I got told to go back in to physical therapy and that was the last time I went there. After that I finally got referred to get an MRI done and when I got my results I had to get another one done because they wanted to see more by adding a special dye injection which shows tendons and such unlike the first scan I’d gotten. It’s been 6 months since the incident for me and I learned a few things which I’ll recommend: begin with a heating pad on your shoulder for 20 minutes then Do a couple shoulder stretches like reaching behind your back and if you can buy a pulley as well. After your stretches u do a massage and finish of with 20 minutes of icing your shoulder (do at least 2 times per week) after a while mobility won’t hurt as much that’s when you then get bands which you will use to do shoulder exercises (certain bands will have different types of resistance so start with an easy one) you do 1 set of 10 reps in the motions you struggle with like pulling down to your waist and move up from band resistance when that gets easier. I know it’s a lot but it’ll help get you farther and after that I found that body weight exercise like pushups, pull-ups with a band help gain some muscle and strength back but it all takes effort to get back at the strength u initially had

If you have a real tear, it will NOT heal itself. You can do all the exercises, take all the rest and medicines you want but the tear will be there and will never get better, most likely worse. The only way to fix it is to get it surgically repaired. I had my left rotator cuff repaired last October.
@MzMariaMaria

how was that experience for you because I believe I will need it too, the doctor is sending me to PhT soon but he never even did an altrasound or MRI , he did x-rays no bone fracture (which I knew already) I have every sign its a cuff tare , I can't raise my arm pass my chin ,it completely stops and hurts like heck!!
@chadbreedlove5457

My experience went very well. I had a good surgeon and a good therapist. Recovery is long but needed. My therapy was for 12 weeks. You will need an MRI to confirm the tear and to see how bad the tear is. MRI is needed because that's how soft tissue is visible, x-rays wont show the damage. I would get another opinion or see an orthopedist, someone who specializes in joint repair. Even a sports orthopedic would be good. Loss of range of motion is a good indicator of a tear as well. I had constant pain in my left shoulder/bicep area is how I was aware of mine. It occurred over time due to weight training. But yes, get that MRI.

You are welcome. I just hate seeing a lot of people saying do exercises to fix a rotator cuff. They wont fix it. Again, you can't fix a tear with rest, exercises, medicine, only surgery will. These people will waste all this time thinking it will and will only worsen the condition. Then surgery is more intense, recovery is longer, and you increase the chances of a lesser recovery. My shoulder is great. I am back to lifting heavy again with no problems. In fact I am entering another bodybuilding show in June this year.

I'm a beginner training at home, and I damaged my rotator cuffs on both sides doing the very same thing, DB chest press (because I'm sometimes too thick-headed when doing the last set to failure and forcefully complete unclean reps...) I spent 5 days doing only therapy exercises, then yesterday I tried normal weights again - came to the conclusion that I need so see a physical therapist asap to evaluate the damage. Kinda scared tbh.

Sometimes with a heating pad put on before throwing the pain takes longer to arrive or not at all. Sometimes I can get 25 throws in with no issue, sometimes the 2nd ball I throw in the day starts the pain. I have never pitched and only throw now about once a week for softball. Great Video Madden. I have had shoulder pain for a long time. I have all the symptoms of impingement. I used to lift heavy weights in the gym and was in a bad car accident. I live with the pain daily and sometimes it's so bad I can barely get a coffee cup out of the cabinet. I cant do any kind of weight training anymore. Bench presses hurt bad, Lat pull downs hurt bad. Any form of exercise involving the shoulder I cant do. I get a lot of popping , clanking noises and pain when I try. If I hold my arm down by my side and rotate my fist anterior /posterior back and forth i feel and hear popping and clanking. When I take my bad shoulder/arm and reach over and try to grab the other shoulder with my hand the pain is pretty sever in the front of the shoulder area towards the end of the collarbone/top of the arm bone head. I have no insurance and no money for a PT. I work a very physical job where I have to pick up and carry very heavy things all day. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated on how I can rehab or dix my shoulder myself. I would like to be able to work out again with weights....

About 6 weeks ago doing Zottman curls I had a HORRIBLE sound in my left shoulder - an MRI showed it to be a "...high grade near full tear in the supraspinatus...". 2 days later I had zero pain - but STUPIDLY I was training my WSL Wung Chun strikes on a bag an AAAAAARGH - nasty pain in the left shoulder. Anyway - cut a long story short - I have continued weight training but stopped Zottman curls or any overhead exercises or any movement that causes a pain (and no strikes as extending my near full length is both difficult and can be painful) - in 'theory' if I stay away from those exercises that hurt - am I reasonably safe to continue my gym work? Any 'all care - no responsibility' suggestiosn welcome. Thanks.

I can lift weights fine after being injured about 2 months ago. I mean I couldn't for about 2 weeks but like the left the side my body has gotten smaller. Like my shoulder isn't as rounded. My tricep and bicep look flatter. My left pec seems flatter. But I can still lift and have range of motion with some pain in very few lifts but the pain is the least of my concern it's more the fact of if muscle atrophy is permanent or not? Anyone else have answers???

I don't have health insurance so I can't go to a doctor or PT, so I have been trying to figure out what my injury is - At first I thought a deltoid strain but now I believe it to be the rotator cuff. Not being able to use my left arm has really put a damper on my life. And then having suffered a torn piriformis April 2017 had me in the bed for two years! And then 2013 suffered a broken sacrum! Today was the first day I was able to almost lift my arm to where I can shave my armpit. Not being able to scratch my back is a real pain in the butt! This whole time I've been wondering if what I had was in fact a rotator cuff tear. After seeing this video and you illustrating the symptoms I am 100% positive this is the issue. If you are moving a treadmill and a man decides to jump on it for fun don't try to lift it up again because you will tear your shoulders out of the sockets and Tear your piriformis muscle.

Just a hunch, but I imagine stress would close the subacromial space too. Pressing one's elbow on a chair arm-rest would seemingly close the space as well. Story: About 4-5 years ago a sales rep told me he had an operation to repair a rotator cuff due to weight lifting. I remember the conversation, because I experience some pain in my shoulder as well as the infraspinatus of the clavicle. Just now I experimented stretching my arm downward and I sensed a bit of relief. Based on my experimenting just now, this type of physical therapy seems legitimate. What I always remember about the sales rep was that he said the rotator cuff can heal by itself. My personal belief is that if you can avoid the knife DO SO.

During the time, I use to sleep on my arms/ and at times in an abducted position. Soon, i started to notice a sensation that my right shoulder felt somewhat lower and imbalanced compared to the left, which felt perfectly stable. The right shoulder-joint area feels weird around the deltoids and the muscles connecting to the chest

You don't need hands-on physical therapy for a minor rotator cuff injury. I've learned this in my years. My first time I did it, did what the doctors said, and realized that after learning what to do and how to fix it, going into a physical therapist is useless when you can do the same basic things at home. Sure, if your insurance pays for it, go for it, but there is NO reason to pay to go to someone for stretching when you can do it at home. Plenty of youtube videos from doctors showing you the exercises to do at home. It usually takes 3 months of stretching (forward, sideways, behind the back) to get your muscles stretched out for full range of motion. Minor tears heal up in about a week, it's just painful after that. You need to stretch to get the muscles back into order.

thanks for the info. I visited my doc. today and also had x-rays done; and based on his evaluation, he said it seemed like a pinched nerve due to "not so good" posture and bad sleeping position. Hopefully it's not too serious but anyways thank you!

I think I tore my rotator cuff muscle that's in the front; I thought it was a chest muscle. I got it from a looping stretching exercise using my arms. I let it heal on its own, and I think it's 90% healed, maybe more. Is letting that muscle heal on its own okay?

Hi, my rotator cuff does hurt when i do the things u talked about, reaching overhead, driving etc. i also feel a pull when i turn my head to the right (injuried shoulder). sometimes i can feel it pull from behind my right ear, through my right trapezius, through the shoulder and further down my ribcage/lats. it is even visible in my neck, it looks like a tendon pushing through/out to the side. my neck is actually giving me more problems in daily life than the shoulder.

Whatever it is, it hurts like a bitch. I have had this pain a few times before but it always healed fast within a few days of rest. This time after hurting it again I rested for week and went back to training, bench press, dumbell rows, pullups, etc.., and it hurts like a bitch. I have good range of movement it only hurts bad when my shoulders are forward and my arms are hanging by my side. The pain is coming from back of shoulder and radiates into tricep. No pain when I move arm up and down, side to side or above my head. What could it be?

I have an assignment about rotator cuff tendopathy (RCT), while I am searching, I am confused between impingement syndrome (IS) and the RCT, are they related and connected? the RCT is caused by IS, is that correct? and Please if you can explain the key intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for rotator cuff tendinopathies in biomechanics

I was wrestling with a friend when he slammed me on my left shoulder...This was 5 months ago tomorrow...I can handle the pain, but its just annoying. Does it matter how long I wait before trying physical therapy? The pain is almost all gone when I do normal daily stuff, but I can't workout anymore...I can't even do a push up because the pain is so bad when I try.

It doesn't heal, ask any surgeon, it can only become asymptomatic. If you spend the rest of your life on the couch watching TV you can become pain free. Otherwise if you want to continue to be an athlete and do sports and fitness properly, you have to have it fixed. Suggesting a full thickness tear can heal really is preying on the hopes of would-be clients.

I tore mine initially about a year ago, but was able to deal with most limitations, then a few months after, I felt and heard it tear again while mountain biking. Then, about four months ago, I tripped going upstairs and hurt it worse than ever, but don’t recall hearing it tear again. It’s not my primary shoulder, so I can deal with the limitations. I think I’m ready to begin exercising again and want to strengthen the muscles around the area. I’m curious how you’ve come along?

What would your guess be till my shoulder is healed. Heres my scenario. In august i hurt my shoulder doing dips. I couldnt do a single bodyweight pull up or even do shoulder press with just my hands.. for a month. and it hurt to do the empty can test. now i am painfree but if i lay on that side of the shoulder i feel a slight ache. it feels 90% better. i noticed my injured shoulder is alot less flexible than other arml.( i can only putarm half way on my back and my other arm goes higher

Hi I'm not sure what my issue is. Last night I was doing the olympic snatch movement and as I was doing it I found my left shoulder becoming gradually weaker until a point when I put the bar down and could barely lift my arm straight out in front of me. I couldn't produce any strength using my shoulder and the only way I could lift my arm properly was to use the muscles around it, for example the trapezius. I don't experience any pain really but I fear I've damaged the rotator cuff. Any Advice?

My left shoulder bothers me during my workout. Doing shoulder presses/military presses aggravates the shoulder and I feel weak but only at a certain angle. Once the weight is up and I space my hands to a wider grip, the pain and weakness is not so bad. Do I have a rotator cuff issue? I do sleep with my arm extended and experience some pain after several hours of sleep.

Is that the inflammed Rotator Cuff / tendons who are doing this cric/crac noise. Or did the tendons became loose ( because of over-stretching ) and now my shoulder joint is moving with some specific movement and will the noise ever go away?

Injured my shoulder back in October 2013 and now ultra sound shows I have a 1.5cm X 0.4cm tear on my rear rotator cuff. Sucks because since my injury I stopped going to gym (which I attended 5 times a week prior) and have gained 10lbs of fat. Depressing.

My left shoulder has had pain for years now Years ago I remember hurting my soldier in a wrestling match There is popping, cracking and a rubbing in the rotator cuff area. The popping happens right at the very edge of my shoulder If I bend my elbow in and move my shoulder up and down it rubs and ends up making a pop or cracking sound. Sometimes, I will have slight pain in my rotator area Please help what do you think is the problem Is it a possible tear? My left shoulder is weaker than my right.

this is a old post but info never hurts. Popping, cracking, etc aren't from a rotator cuff tear, a damaged muscles has no effect on your joints/etc working like that. Usually with such things its a combination of things like bone spurs, a tendon or cartilage problem, or basic arthritis/bursitis. Mine have rubbed for 20+ years as long as I can remember. Just old/abused joints my friend lol. Lots of injuries when it comes to sports related stuff. Read up on proper shoulder stretching exercise.

ok hurt my left shoulder about 4 months ago been lifting weights for 20 plus years Im 38. Its not a major pain but chiropractor says I need to strtenghten my RC it feels like a pinching in back of left shoulder when I do pressing or pushing...or try to reach around to scratch back. He says it tendinitis and muscle tightness. He says do that exercise to get it stronger than I should be ok.

I would really suggest getting that checked out I had a similar accident snowboarding and I ended up with a grade one ACL tear so the tendon that use to hold down my collarbone is now stretch and I had the same symptoms as you after I had the injury

Saw doctor. Apparently my shoulder X-ray was fine. He wants to order an MRI next & some blood work. This video gives me hope that whatever is wrong with my shoulder can be repaired without surgery. My concern is that if I don't get treatment soon, it will worsen the problem. It's been three weeks. Sleeping, dressing, brushing my hair or teeth, cooking, doing dishes, driving, and so on, all are very painful. I'm older so maybe I've just worn it out. I don't know what happened to it.

I've recently been diagnosed with impingement rotary cuff tendinitis also had a Ultra scan etc! After exercising the pain just seems to get worse. My painful arm started after l had a Covid jab over six months ago. Could you suggest other ways of relieving my pain. Would an X ray or MRI scan have a better view of what's going on inside my shoulder/arm.
