I live in California. In 2014 I had my in-ground swimming pool professionally demolished and converted into a beautifully landscaped rose garden. I obtained city permits for said demolition and a required geological report for final city approval. It cost around 11K for everything. I never looked back. Pools aren’t for everyone, especially in drought-stricken Southern California.

You can decommission (drill holes) and fill in a pool in most areas in Australia. There are companies that do this professionally. You just have to disclose this was done when selling your property. It’s a much cheaper option than fully removing the pool.

@@matty00866 my last house was built in 1968 and had a pool that was installed in 1971. In 2002, the side walls buckled inwards and I had the pool filled in professionally and converted into an outdoor entertaining area. Because the pool structure is still mostly there (underground) you do need to disclose to new buyers. A keen buyer bought it and wasn’t too worried.

In my area a pool can be filled in. My landscaper drilled holes in the bottom, removed the pavers & stacked them in the bottom, filled the rest of the pool with fill dirt & then graded a new yard with top soil & grass seed. Voila, pool is gone! I must disclose this whenever I sell the house.

Filled ours in professionally done. 12k. Permits are required of course. They drilled the holes for drainage. They were only required to demo the concrete down 2 feet. They removed all the equipment pump...etc...They did a fantastic job! Our pool hadn't had water in it in over 25 years. Inherited house. Non repairable pool. Needed to be completely redone! 80k-100k. No thanks.

I have a question if anyone has input. I live in Calgary, Alberta. Very few people have pools here, as it’s not as humid as where I grew up in Winnipeg. However, we have a huge pie-shaped backyard, and it’s south west facing. There’s no way we could’ve tolerated being back there without a pool. 1/3 of the yard is an inground pool with waterslide and a spillover hot tub. We put a glass fence around the pool area because our kids were two and three when we installed the pool. The rest of the backyard is an outdoor kitchen, a sunshelter covering an outdoor patio sofa, and recliners and a dining table for outdoor meals & entertaining. A large area is a kid section that is no longer a play set but a trampoline. Our kids were in the pool all day, everyday, growing up, and they had friends over to swim all the time. It was wonderful in the summers here. It’s heartbreaking to even consider filling in the pool. So many guests wished they had our backyard. I think a future buyer would appreciate the pool. Maybe I’m wrong. I would like to keep it covered and just drain it. It’s already been winterized as it is October. I’m wondering if I can sump pump all the water out and just leave the winter tarp on until I sell it. I have no idea when I will sell. Any thoughts or suggestions? P.S. I have no money and I’m stuck here. Post-separation, I can’t afford this pool in our backyard and my kids are teens that no longer use it. south-west facing, and we couldn’t have enjoyed our backyard much with kids without the pool. They had so many friends coming to swim all the time. So I’m thinking that when I move out/sell, they may want the pool.

Its ridiculous to say you cant fill it in. Yes you "can" but it does require an excavator to demo it and fill it in. They break up the bottom, for drainage, pull the sides in, gravel and fill, compact it up. Thats called a partial. If they remove everything and then fill it, thats a full removal and it is definitely more costly. Partials have to be disclosed to buyers because you cant build over them. But you "can" remove and fill in a pool. In our case, a new liner was due, and that was 5K. Over time, we saved the electric bills for the pump, replacing a cover or two ($1500 each) a pump or two, sand filters or two, chemicals every year, and in our case we could remove the wooden fencing which would have needed replacing for 10K in a few years. And, we gain a yard. So, Id say that Steves a swimming pool guy and isnt particularly keen on not having a money pit. I mean, pool. no offense.

Swimming pools are definitely money pits. And time pits and work pits. I definitely understand why some people do not want a swimming pool. For Me: I would consider filling in my swimming pool with dirt if I was not willing and wanting to do the required "daily" maintenance. I rather stay at home than travel for vacations. My inground pool would not make financial sense to me if I rather be spending my money elsewhere than my backyard. * I have no choice but to keep and like my swimming pool considering I spent over 10K on it this year with a new liner, and trucked in water , and two battery operated electric vacuums .... etc (lol)

Hi there, I agree. I’d really like a simple garden instead. So sick of it. I live in a country where there are no laws regarding this, I would be allowed to if I wanted to. I do have a question, if someone could kindly answer me…my pool is a fiber one. 15.000 liters. Can I just fill it with dirt, technically speaking, safely? Thank you in advance 🙏🏻 PS.: it’s an unground pool and I’m asking if I can just fill ir because having it removed would be too expensive.

@@YAWEHPrincess_ If you simply fill it in without putting in any drainage, you will have to disclose that when you sell your home and it will devalue your home. If you don't put in drainage holes at the least, it will be a disaster for you and cost more in the long run. The soil in the pool will saggy and wet as it can't drain. You'll end up with a bog.

What about the 10k gallon over the ground pool? the pool itself can be removed easly but there is a concrete slab ring left in the ground. Can i just cover it with dirt and plant grass there? Do i need a permit?

Are liner pools easier/less costly to fill in? I bought a house and found out at settlement that they had filled in a liner pool. I’m not sure if they did it the right way but hoping that the land would be ok for a pool 10 years from now, if we desire.

Yes liner pools are easier. Removing concrete pools from the ground is one heck of a lot more work than a vinyl pool kit.
