At my age (70), I try really hard to eat good food, even though I'm living on Social Security and have a mortgage. I don't eat at fast food places. That food has so many additives and chemicals in it that always makes me feel sort of sick - "icky." I grow a large garden, and have a small flock of chickens. I can and preserve, make my own bread and biscuits. And yes, I buy or make butter. So my breakfast of two eggs, two slices of bacon, toast and coffee will run me about $2.00. Sausage? I buy pork shoulder, grind it, make my own sausage, and freeze it in 1/2 lb, vacu-sealed packs. The meat costs me about $1.49/lb, so it actually cost me less than bacon. Biscuits? Homemade, of course, and I use lard so they melt in your mouth. Most everything I eat is made from scratch. It's really less expensive and so much better tasting. I feel very blessed - I grew up poor in Virginia, and worked on my uncles' farm in trade for beef and pork for my family. I learned how to do a lot of things, from gardening to raising animals, butchering, and preserving, and I can squeeze a quarter so hard it'll fart a nickel! God has blessed me with these skills, and I am so grateful.

Love this comment. Kindred spirit here. Same sort of life and growing up. My brothers and I worked on two neighbors farms. Mom always got her meat from one and fresh veggies from the other. We also had our own garden with fresh herbs and what ever the farm didn't supply. It was a good life and I'm grateful for it. We’re older too and living on social security. We very rarely go out to eat. I read on our local Facebook where someone was commenting on what a wonderful lunch they had at a local restaurant and took a picture of the receipt. It was $49 for lunch. Wow. I looked at that and all I thought about was what I could buy with that $49 at the grocery. Not much but surely more food than a lunch. I kind of feel sorry for this younger generation. If things get worse, it’ll be harder on them to adjust.

That American classic along with a cup of coffee at my local diner now costs $17.49, coffee $3.79 for a total of $21.28 with sales tax at 10.25% for a grand total of $23.46, not including a 15 percent tip of $3.70. So eating out here in Burbank for us folk who like to live below our means is a no go today. Before 2020 you could get the same meal for for a special price $8.99 between 7 to 10 am. Usual price was $11 bucks. I eat at home and save so much money! Gas is now $6.58 a gallon and I just heard it’s likely to go up another 35 cents this weekend. Thank god I’m walking until this inflation and price gouging goes away. If it doesn’t and keeps going up I’ll be fine. I worry for families though. Its a crime what this government did to us during the pandemic. A crime

This summer I started to make a pancake supper once a week because of the high prices. I make them from scratch, so I won't be able to figure a price per plate. It takes only a cup and half of flour to make. A little sugar, pinch of salt and teaspoon of baking power. Enough water to make a thick batter. A little oil in the skillet. I normally have some leftover that I put in the frig for later in the week. I made some jam this year that did not jell the way it should so, it is my syrup. Usually, it is a little sausage or sometimes bacon. Sometimes I will fry and egg also. Some can fruit finished off the meal. If I am ambitious, I will make some for the freezer to use within a few weeks. I watch for mark downs when I run to the store. I now have a container of buckwheat and a container of whole wheat flour. I bought them both because of deep markdowns. I substitute a quarter of a cup of flour for a quarter cup of either whole wheat or buckwheat in the pancakes to change things up. It has made it easier to make it to the end of the month doing this.

Love me some breakfast for supper. Like you, I can't eat much at one sitting anymore. I usually scramble me 2 eggs and add a slice of cheese in it and along with two pieces of toast with jelly that's enough for me. This morning I actually made a pancake (using a box Storebrand) and spread preserves over it and rolled it up and ate it that way. Tonight, I cooked some collards with ham and had lacey cornbread with it, shared it with my eldest grandchild that loves collards. Still had collards left over for another meal. I'm learning to try and do without meat in my meals. Meats are just plain too high for my budget. I did come across some bacon grease sold at Food lion that is shelf stable. I only buy bacon when they have a really good sale. I've been buying up the bacon grease when I can to use in cooking to give food that bacon flavor without the bacon. Yes, everybody is having to cut back or cut corners in their food buying nowadays. I'm just glad I remember my grandmother's recipes and advice from when they lived through the Great Depression. Sure comes in handy. Enjoy your food, just don't slip Gracie a piece of your bacon...lol.

Your American Breakfast looks fabulous. I love the tip about cooking the eggs/water/foil. There's nothing better than the sight of two eggs cracked in a fry pan. My preference is to crisp up the edges and harden up the center-dash of pepper, stale bread, and margarine. Mr. Tom, you've made me hungry! Eggs will have to be on the menu for tonight's supper. A homemade breakfast like that is so much better than anything found outside the home. It is nice to enjoy a treat now and then and the company of a friend, partner, or other folk. But here in WI it costs $20.00 for breakfast/no coffee at McD's, and $21.00 at Hardees with coffee. Thanks for sharing this video Mr. Tom. Hugs to you and the kitty krew.

Hey, Mr. Tom! 👋 One of the advantages restaurants/fast food joints have is they bulk-buy and I'm sure, at a reduced rate. That's such a cool trick with the eggs! I'm excited because I like a runny yolk too, and over-easy can be difficult. So I'll be trying the water trick. Same breakfast for me, except only one egg because I have jumbos, would run me $1.89. Now stop talking and eat while it's hot! Hugs!

Here is our breakdown, we live near a big city in the middle of the country. We have chickens, the eggs would be cheaper per egg if I didn't give them so many treats. Each egg is about .40 right now for us, the really thick bacon we buy at Sam's is about .60 per slice, and the artisan style bread we use (my daughter likes it) is .09 per slice. That makes one breakfast a base price of $2.18. Not bad, but then I save the grease to use in other meals, and any waste generally goes to the dog or the chickens, which makes me feel better. The price of eggs at the stores here are about what I am spending on the chickens at the moment. What a fun video, I haven't done a meal breakdown like this in a while, and it's nice to know what each component costs. Thank you for the diversion!

I bought a bunch of packages of bacon ends and pieces and froze them when they were 3.69 per pound. I have quail that give between 8-11 eggs per day and 8 equal 2 hen eggs. I cook the extra for the dog, or put them in the freezer for later. I make my own bread in a machine I bought secondhand for $10, best purchase ever. Jelly for my toast, I made it too. I have different flavors grape, and a marmalade type from squash, and goldenrod, they are all good. Two types from wild plants and one from the garden. I am not sure how to figure the cost of the things I made, found, grow, but I am happy with them. I enjoyed seeing your trick with the foil for cooking your eggs. I sometimes pan toast my bread. The little bit of bacon fat from cooking it first gives me just enough to keep the eggs from sticking, I cook them second, and then toast the bread last.

Home cooking usually costs a lot less than buying meals someone else has cooked for you. Anyone living on a tight budget who has a kitchen could be saving money with home cooking. It is easy for a non-cook to learn to cook simple foods such as pan-fried eggs and bacon. Where I live in southern Nevada, a 24-pack of raw eggs is now under $6 at Sams Club and Costco. For a brief while earlier this year, when we could find them, eggs were going for 75 cents to $1 each and were being sold only in dozen or half-dozen packs. I make a three-egg bacon and Cheddar omelet each morning, topped with a little guacamole sauce, because I have been on a low carb diet for nearly three years now. So, no toast, biscuits, hashbrowns, home fries, grits or gravy for me. And my cooking fat of choice is either genuine butter or bacon drippings. Sometimes I dice some leftover cooked steak or chicken and add this to the omelet. I also brew my own large cup of low-carb pumpkin spice coffee each morning because there is no way I am going to pay that big markup for a Starbuck's sugary coffee drink (or consume all those carbs). I don't much care what ingredients cost me, because I can usually substitute a lower cost alternative to a higher cost ingredient if need be. And home cooking with first class ingredients is still usually less expensive than what a restaurant would charge for a similar meal. And that is not even considering the additional cost of the tip and taxes. The local Denny's restaurant cost us $40 for breakfast the last time the two of us bought two omelet meals plus either coffee or iced tea. We can have a week of homemade breakfasts and lunches for two people for under $40. And our cooking tastes better than Denney's meals because we use best quality, minimally processed ingredients and best quality seasonings.

Mr Tom, love your cooking/home economics videos. I start every week, with a written dinner menu on the front of the fridge, which also has a list of options for work/at home lunches, as well as another list of bfst options for the upcoming, new week. I work hard to continue to offer a variety of options for our meals. Breakfast, for instance, included this week: Raisin bran, corn chex (both were gifted to me) or plain cheerios; cream of wheat or oatmeal (the stove top kind), eggs only served on Sundays, home baked goods: leftover scratch corn bread, apple spiced zucchini muffins; homemade French chocolate chip brioche bread turned into French toast (bought the Brioche for $2/loaf at a discount shop, used what I call, cheap "cooking eggs" and reconstituted dry milk, cinnamon and vanilla. We have seasonal fruit, canned/frozen/dried fruit available as well as cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. For breakfast meats, for both health as well as economy reasons, we do a rotation, on Sundays: one week, it's bacon, then bfst sausage, SPAM, Ham. Can be served alongside eggs or incorporated in with the eggs to stretch even further. You asked about eggs on toast with bacon. I am in expensive CT. That said, here are my tips/tricks: Bread: I make my own, call it $2/2 lb loaf or 13 cents per slice. I rarely buy bread, when I do see it on the discount rack, I'll grab a few for back up. Store brand white bread, 2 lb loaf is normally $2.39 here. I just bought 2, however, as they were priced down to 59 cents/loaf! so 3 cents/slice. Eggs: yes, I use pasture raised, organic $$$ eggs on Sundays, $/dozen or 67/2 eggs. I also keep WM cheapo large white eggs for cooking needs: $1.29/doz (med not sold here), so 22 cents/2 eggs. Again for health as well as economy, we are using more Blue Bonnet margarine here as well. I grabbed 3, 45? oz tubs as they were "damaged" for $2.75/tub. We are set for MONTHS. Bacon: I only ever buy it when on sale (often 12 oz for $1.99 Jimmy Dean at a discount grocery)and toss it in the freezer. A full lb of bacon can usually* be found marked down for about $4 (instead of the usual $7/lb! and no, not talking organic). A lb yields 8, 2 piece servings so 50 cents for bacon. So yes, I can easily do a 2 eggs, toast, bacon breakfast for $1 or under/serving. Another tip: save your pork fat drippings and store in a covered glass jar in the fridge for frying. Flavor is phenomenal! Today's breakfast: I had coffee, 2 pieces of corn bread, water. My son had cottage cheese, water, herbal tea (gifted to us), the last of the apple spiced, zucchini (garden produce) muffins, a piece of corn bread, banana. Good eats, nutritionally sound, too, with a nice variety.

Who said ya can't eat that for supper. Lol . I do it all the time. Reminds me of my hubby when I do. He was the breakfast cook around here. Now it's a way to use up some extra eggs. 🙂 Rose

I had 3 eggs that we bought on sale .18¢ for all three, no meat bacon is too expensive for me and we don't eat it very often two pieces of toast (out of a loaf) which hubby maybe paid a $1.28 a loaf for, he paid $3.98 for a ten pound bag of potatoes, and I washed peeled and shredded it 1 potato into a frying pan for a rather large hash brown patty. So I'm pretty sure it was well under a dollar. That's what I ate earlier for dinner and all day. I had a big bowl of cereal for a snack later. But we usually only eat once or twice a day. So we don't eat a lot most times. We shop around sales and can eat cheaply most times. I ate one yolk and the dog ate the other two. Out of my dinner.

We’re an allergy family on medical diets with autistic food aversions and intolerances so our cost is - 1 dozen corn & soy free duck eggs ($16), organic bacon ($7 for 6 slices), & a loaf of organic whole wheat top 7 free bread - ($6 for 10 slices). If we want to top it with butter it’s $6 for 2 sticks (we have to buy European imported) or $9.99 for a jar of safe strawberry preserves (again imported from Europe or Canada because food manufacturing laws & allergy labeling & disclosure laws are stricter). Not cheap but as there is ZERO safe restaurants in the entire USA we can eat at (all have soy or other legumes in the kitchen) we always cook at home. No alternatives for us. It’s eat at home or die 😢

I am the only one of my friends that can cook. They look at me in the kitchen like I pulled a rabbit out of a hat. I think they could do the prepared bacon and make toast but eggs would baffle them. Obviously my house is where everyone gathers and I love it. Biscuits and gravy always in minutes morning or night. It's a blessing to feed people, it brings us together.

I'd have to put a little jam on that toast but one slice would be enough. I'll have to look into prices and figure out the cost of that breakfast.

I have 2 eggs and toast for breakfast or dinner. Sometimes I don’t have bread. I scramble the eggs with onions and peppers or some diced ham. Glad you are feeling better!

In former times, the classic American breakfast was steak and eggs with buttered toast or biscuits. Apple pie and coffee included. If you are a lot hungrier sometime, you could add a small bowl of oatmeal you your meal. We like the classics, but we also eat leftovers regularly. I am not sure that would be enough for my husband who needs a good breakfast before work in the morning. He usually likes eggs and whatever we have to go with them. So I can't calculate that. I'm still not big on breakfast first thing in the morning.

When and where was that? I’ve never seen steak and eggs referred to as “the norm” for American breakfasts. That was always the upgraded breakfast. I’ve never even heard of apple pie being included.

Looks great Mr. Tom. Breakfast for dinner is great. I will try to do This later . I have a horrible cold.
I’m 48, married, never had kids. I buy food when it’s on sale. I buy a lot when it’s cheap. Got lots of freezer space to put it in. I also have a garden and I can. I’ve given up on fast food. When you can cook, it doesn’t taste that great. I scratch cook. With todays prices, have to do what you can if you want a healthy meal. Gotta do what ya gotta do. Eggs and toast or oatmeal for me. I buy my oats in bulk. I like $1 meals.

I’m allergic to wheat, so oatmeal or really any hot cereal is good. I do add a little jam or apple butter to sweeten it instead of putting plain sugar in it. I like a little flavor with my sweet. Maybe if I’m feeling a little extra, I will add a Pat of butter to my oatmeal. I think I’m a pretty cheap date!

Here in Minnesota I shop Costco and whatever price leader specials are at Aldi, HyVee. Don’t eat much bacon or sausage but use for flavoring in cooking. Coleman no nitrite bacon .76 My favorite favorite bread Killer Dave’s organic. .50 Aldi special on eggs .99 a dozen .16 Total $1.42 I don’t eat this kind of breakfast regularly but great comparison. All the stores are within 3 miles and can hit all in one run. Costco gas worth the trip much cheaper than other stations. Now at $3.59/gallon Coffee $.12 a cup.
