The most wonderful thing about the Addams Family is that they are about as far from a dysfunctional family as it's possible to get. The parents love each other and show it, they love their children and show that. They provide direction and limits to the kids, such as making sure that Wednesday has the correct butcher's knife with which to hunt her brother. They teach, as when Fester's helping the kids with their skit. Sure, they're not conventionally normal, but they are a loving, happy family.

I recently saw a page from the original script for this film. When the Addamses are introduced, the script is interrupted by a note from the writer, a whole paragraph on how incredibly important it is that the audience understand these two people are _always wanting to have sex._ That it must be clear they can just barely keep their hands off each other. It's really funny writing, and it was obviously taken very seriously. Raul and Anjelica just went for it in a huge way, they truly captured the vibe of the original TV series, where Gomez was constantly showering Morticia with kisses while she smirked at her own power. The Sexiest TV Couple EVER.

I didn't see anyone else mention it, but the Addams Family was originally a comic strip, written and drawn by a man named Charles Addams. The original strips are not quite as dark as some other comics, but were the basis of the TV show, which made it more comical than dark. The movies were a little more faithful to the comics than the TV series, but the cast of characters is from the TV show.

1:25 Yep! Thing's actor is Christopher Hart. He's apparently also a magician. Here's what I found about how they filmed him: "Chris would wear various prosthetic wrists. For front, top and profile shots, Chris would lie face-down on a car mechanic’s dolly, his arm outstretched, wearing a black sleeve. The false prosthetic wrist would be added, turned upwards, giving the illusion that his missing body was positioned above. For shots from behind (or when Thing had to turn around), Chris would be positioned above the camera, with a prosthetic placed around his actual wrist (to create an edge). " The go on to say that they rotoscoped his body out of the shots (rotoscoping is the same tech they used to create the OG lightsaber effect in the first Star Wars movies). :D

Cobwebs absolutely light on fire. I actually burned down my garage when I was 8 by playing with matches near a bunch of cobwebs. They burn up almost instantly, so normally it wouldn't be an issue, but in my case they were close to a barrel of oil soaked wood, so the webs basically acted as a fuse.

Glad you enjoyed this movie. It was one of my favorite films as a kid and it still holds up pretty well. Raul Julia and Anjelica Houston as Gomez and Morticia were *the* iconic couple for me. The Addams Family was created as an antithesis to a lot of TV shows back in the day that had bad and dysfunctional family dynamics. Yes, the Addamses were "strange," but they were also a loving, devoted family. They were very much a "don't judge a book by its cover" lesson to a lot of TV watchers, and the movie respected and recreated that perfectly. It's sad that Raul Julia has passed away because he was an acting legend, but the original Gomez Addams, John Astin, is still alive and well.

I used to watch the show when I was a kid and I was a pretty shy child and always felt weird and different from others. watching the addams I learned to embrace my weirdness instead of make it a big depressing problem and now, as an adult, I'm still not caring what others could think about me and living my life as a decent person (I hope) but doing it my way

17:27: About the telegram/morse code: Telegrams were in fact sent with morse code. The word "stop" was synonymous with the word "period". In fact, in the UK, they still call periods "full stops." The reason why "stop" caught on in the US was because of the cost of telegrams. Every dot and dash was a charge, or maybe every letter/word (historians debate this). In any event, punctuation was extra, being newer, and often longer. People tried not to use it at all, unless absolutely necessary, but a period was unavoidable in many cases. People did not want to pay extra for a period that many might not have even known existed in morse code, at first. Spelling out -STOP- was the cheaper option, and -PERIOD- was out of the question entirely. So when Thing is putting "stop" in the morse code, it the same as a period. Gomez saying "stop" out loud is no different than him saying "period."

You would also love the original cartoons by Charles Addams, who did them for many years in The New Yorker magazine. While many of the cartoons involve the Addams Family, others are just as wicked---Such as the cartoon showing a woman who has come into the house, from the garden, to answer the phone. She tells the caller that her husband can't come to the phone right now because he's in the garden. You look past her shoulder to see the grave. Wickedly hilarious! Books of Addams' cartoons are available on E-bay for really good prices.
