The Lux Æterna solo grew on me so baldy I fucking love it. Once you get past the “oh man that’s all?” Is a fun solo and is classic Kirk Hammett as fuck.

Y’all don’t know the story behind it. 72 seasons is the first 18 years of a persons life. When we start out that’s what we do. Unnecessary notes, whammy. And shared with no technical abilities. That was the purpose of this solo. And it makes perfect sense .

I've come to appreciate Kirk's rhythm a lot. James often takes shortcuts in his downpicking (which is fair considering he's singin,g) but Kirk has always stayed true to the downpicking in Master, Blackened, Creeping Death, etc.

That's actually the trait I admire most about Hammett and something that isn't talked about too much. That he is able to keep up with one of the greatest rhythm players of all time. And it's not a slight on Kirk at all since Hetfield is just that good.

Definitely. He isnt the best guitarist in the world, and its all subjective, but he is damn good. He makes catchy solos that can still be incredibly flashy, something that many guitarist virtuosos struggle to do.

I did when I was in a Metallica tribute band and let me add that people don't realize how tiring this songs and solos are, it's all fine and easy when you have to record one solo at a time and you have infinite takes, but on the stage after 6/7 fast songs and hard to nail solos you are going to do stupid mistakes, there is no escape.

I remembered the early to mid 90s when Hammett was worshipped as a “metal God” in guitar magazines. Now the script has been flipped and it’s fashionable to hate on him. Other guitarists have surpassed him in ability, of course, but he’s still damn good. I’ve been playing 30 years and I can’t play the majority of his solos. He’s just damn fast and accurate. And keep in mind, when he’s not soloing, he’s playing the same riffs Hetfield is.

Kirk has his haters, which is a shame, though he`s definitely an easy target lol. However he`s always been a cool guy, a decent human being, has come up with some truly amazing solos, and is also (and always overlooked) easily one of the best rhythm guitarists out there too. People seem to always make it sound like hetfield is the rhythm guy on stage and almost as if Kirk just just stands there until the solo comes around lol, but his rhythm playing? Tight as f~~~.

I didn't really like the solo in Lux and I joke around a lot that he sucks for only using pentatonic (mostly), but in all fairness, he's really good and he's still able to play pretty well live and he's alao my second most favorite guitarist (after dave) and sure he's a little sloppy sometimes, but he doesn't deserve that much hate. The thing is he's unique and has his own style that's what makes him one of the best🤘

He’s still awesome idc what anyone says. To still be playing fast paced metal music at 60 is an accomplishment especially since Metallica have been consistently doing shows and tours for 40+ years. People seem to not think about all the wear and tear guitarists hands take especially playing metal. Plus other factors like arthritis as you get older. He’s been doing great and really stepped up his live game in 2022. Can’t wait for 2023!

The problem Kirk has is no one pushes him to write GREAT solos. The last to do that was Bob Rock and we got The Unforgiven. No one is doing it to him now. Lux Aeterna is improv and lazy. It suits the song but he could've done so much more.

What happens to people when they're 60? I think guitar is one of the easier instruments to be able to keep up with as you get older. Vocals can degrade with the vocal cords getting thicker and beat up, drums take physical strength and stamina. I guess arthritis could be an issue but even if he had a big old gut I doubt it would affect his fingers.

Kirk hashed out some nasty ass solos. I think the limitations set by the band hinders his ability to bloom. James and Lars are both heavily riff based musicians so it's hard to fit a good, neat solo in there

Kirk has been one of my favorite as a kid. Great and exciting solos (ride, shortest, ktulu, dyer's, etc) but nowadays, they petit much all sound the same with lots of wah and tremolo picking. No more melody. It's so different that I wonder if he really composed the solos for the first albums !

60 isn’t as old as it once was 20-30 years ago. Ppl were dying at 60 on the norm back then. Nowadays 6o is still considered young if you take care of yourself and stay healthy, Kirk could go on for another 10-15 years playing at a high level and he will.

That's what I have been saying, but it's more like 40-60 years ago. By The 90s people were already living long. 60 wasn't even that old in the 90s. Now it is nothing if one takes care of one's self. I am 41 and people always think O am 28. Look at the two leads from "Cobra Kai". They don't look at all as "old" as they are. Age is just a number. Betty White made it to almost 100 and she wasn't even the most fit person most her life.

He still got it. The only thing for me is that the solo in itself is kinda poor writed by a solo standard... kinda polluted with some phrases that dont make much sense, like the part where he's abusing a little bit of the wammy bar. But yes, he's still an excellent guitar player in my opinion.

the difference is that now he just improvises solos instead of taking time to write a solo so i don't know if its he has gotten bad just different styles of. i like the older solos where he took time to actual write then. idk how people can like the solo for lux eaterna the song is alright but the solo is just awful

People are overblowing how lazy the solo is in Lux Aeterna. If virtually any other famous guitarist laid it down they wouldn't even question it. It's a perfectly effective solo for the song. Everybody needs to just calm down.

Kirk is my personal favorite Metallica Member and although I will say his new solos are kinda shit, it’s not because he can’t play Em it’s because there just basic and boring. But yes Kirk can still play his ass off
