I had the flush mount lights installed throughout my house in a new build. I like them but the downside is replacing the lights is a bit of a hassle. Four of these lights recently went out and you have to replace each unit (cut off power at breaker, unscrew the housing, disconnect and connect the 3 wires on the new unit).

That is odd they did not last that long, they usually have a 25 year warranty?

If you prefer the look of can lights, make sure you get the ones that are insulation contact rated. That way you can pack insulation around the can light. You can also get a sealed lenses to cover the light for air sealing. If you need to access the wiring after the drywall is in, you can drop the metal housing out of the center and the box can be accessed. It isn't easy or fun but it can be done.

I don't understand why no one talks about using can housings for recessed led fixtures. They also cover the hole and have gaskets. This way you get a higher end look that has less glare and are easily changed wihtout needing to deal with high voltage wires.

I don't think it is a big concern if you don't use the ceiling as the divider, insulate the roof, or use radiant heat.

the jbox thing we don't seem to do in australia (we also don't do boxes behind our socket outlets).. but we do have surface mount LEDs.. I'll be going with them instead of recessed because I'm in a hot area, and have no attic (skillion/flat style roof). so i need to keep air/heat/noise/dust transfer to a minimum. thanks for the vid

Interesting to see what other countries do. How do they mount the outlet without a Jbox?

we use metal clips.. and let it all hang loose.. i guess the boxes help keep insulation out of the socket.. maybe help thermal/air sealing.. and perhaps adds a layer of protection when steel framing.. maybe it's just tradition.

Everything is a compromise. This said, the quality of lighting from a recessed box is most often superior to a flat mounted, wafer light...and it looks better too!
@coonhound7300

You are able to access the j box on a can light. You just have to drop the can out from the inside. The j box opens on both sides. If you’ve installed as many as you say you have you should know that.

Great idea for energy efficiency but from a design standard I much prefer a true recessed light fixture. I have concerns for the health issues caused from flickering LED lights. The only LED bulb I can find that is flicker free and offers almost the same color rendering as the sun is from Waveform Lighting. I'm designing a home and was hoping to find a more affordable and energy efficient recessed housing with a 4" opening to house Waveform's A21 95 CRI flicker free bulbs, but I'm not having any luck. Curious if you might have any sources for something like this.

Interesting info. I am aware of the flicker rate in so much tech today, especially TVs. It's not good for your health. I am not aware of any info on Waveform... thanks for posting.

Your video was very informative. What you said about the energy makes a great deal of sense. However, from a visual point of view the deep baffle recessed light offers a look or design that the new flush mount LED down lights don't have. So, what do you do if you want the look of the recessed, deep baffle look? There is something unique about a traditional recessed can (down) light. The fact that you can not see the light directly unless you are right underneath it and that it offers an interesting look when its off and the baffle is a different color than the ceiling make for a striking look. Now you would think that in a era of space ships going to the stars, heart by pass surgery and nuclear submarines the lighting industry and its associated partners could design and build (without charging you a arm and a leg) a recessed unit that doesn't suffer the energy loss described n the above video. That would be my first request or hope. I am simply amazed that the only truly viable option is to choose the new flush mount LED lights. These are not can recessed can lights at all ! They are simply light fixtures that have been smashed so flat that they have no thickness to speak of. NOW, I am not saying they are without merit or don't look good, but to imply that they offer the same look or design features as the traditional deep baffle recessed can light is a disingenuous and disappointing to say the least. The difference between the two is made more striking and noticeable when the older system uses a contrasting baffle color to the light trim and ceiling. The final design element that the new system can't compare to is the indentation of the deep baffle itself. The new flush, flat light is just that...... Flush and flat. I ask , why can't a light be produced that stops or severely limits energy loss??? I believe it could be if the industry had a ounce of vision and aptitude for the the task. It really irritates me that we are being told that we have to choose between a one style or going broke paying a utility bill. Somebody out there needs to take note and develop a light that is energy efficient and has the design, style and visual dynamics of the traditional lights. Thanks to the commentator for taking the time to make the video and entertain this discussion.

There are insulation cups that you can buy to place over the housings inside the attic to keep air leaks to a minimum.

Thank you - My wife and I are enjoying your videos! Could you provide a link to the flush mount LED you demonstrated, or to a similar product!
@@HowToBuildYourOwnHome Thank you! It looks like these aren't quite like the ones you demonstrated. They still require about a 6 inch hole for the light instead having a flush mount with a gasket over a j box.

@@craigoram The first LED lights had a larger transformer that required a larger Jbox. The newer ones have that built into the light so they sit more flush with only a 3 inch jbox and not the larger 4 inch Jbox

As long as they do not have any complex housing system they are both comparable. Look for a gasket on each for better insulation.

Did you never put insulation over and around your cans? That's why they make cans rated to be in direct contact with insulation. So that argument against them is irrelevant.

Yes I would recommend flush mount LED lights using only a Jbox for housing the electrical. Just make sure there is some kind of gasket on the back side to help seal off air floor between attic and living space.

There is very little heat loss with flush mount LED lights using only a Jbox. Additionally there is almost no air flow from living space through the light into the attic, especially if here is a gasket between the light fixture and the ceiling.

If you can't get a complete seal the ceiling will leak via convection and conduction.
