Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as Mexico's first woman president by a sweeping margin and has pledged to boost renewable energy. But she sailed to victory, in part, on the popularity of her predecessor who doubled down on fossil fuels. The favoured successor of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, vowed to continue in the direction set by the populist leftist leader. Sheinbaum pledged to increase renewable energy in Mexico by as much as 50% by the end of her term in 2030. However, she inherits the country grappling with climate change and environmental challenges like pervasive drought, and rampant deforestation.
