I think they should make a rule though. The families have to give up their modern ideas. Each “House” series had people that didn’t follow the historical narrative and I think it took away from the series. If you volunteer and buck the historical tradition, you should leave and have another volunteer or family take your place. Your family should definitely know what to expect. Several families have broken up due to be on the shows.

@@sugakookie6303I think they need to select people who have at least some of the skills required. These jobs weren't done by people who had never done them before, they grew up that way. To throw people with no skills into situations they have no idea how to handle isn't fair, doesn't give a true picture of people's capabilities. Friends of mine applied for the pioneer show, but were turned down because they already knew how to milk a cow, grow a garden, can food, etc. They didn't want people who were already equipped to do a good job.

That young girl would never have even thought of behaving like that in the old days. Children were taught respect of their elders and Mary Ann arrived and went straight to work, Anna clearly did not. She quit the garden, had to be told repeatedly to help with chores and she was never on board from the get go. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and would have been punished and reprimanded for such behavior.

Back in the 30s respecting your elders was the golden rule. There’s no way a 14 year old girl would be able to stamp her foot and get her way. If she can’t tend to the garden how is she going to run a house? They showed the girl being lazy the whole show, the older woman organized, scrubbing laundry by hand, so why would the older woman move out? Perhaps it’s just the way of editing and dramatization of the show.

I think that was done on purpose. Young people aren’t as lazy as you think and frankly they make her look that way for people like yourself to feel superior. Just like the media does a lot. Another issue with “kids acting up” is nowadays parents don’t work in the same place anymore and don’t have the time or means to parent. It’s very rare a mother gets to stay home and teach a child anything. Bad behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated but our society makes it very difficult for parents to actually parent.

I totally enjoyed this, except for Anna's part in the friction. I hate to bag on the kid but... She agreed to do the garden, she didn't, so there was no crop for their family. She is obviously used to getting her way with her dad & doing as she pleased at home hence in her own words she was used to being in her room all day talking on the phone, on the computer, & socializing with her friends. No mention of any chores. I understand her loneliness but she needs to put in more effort & things will be easier here & when they do go back home. Her dad is a sweet man but he is not used to a bossy elder or enforcing chores on his daughter prior to this either. Hopefully the lessons they learned here will make their home life even better. Anna will not look at some of her peers the same, they will seem so much more immature than she remembered because she has been learning responsibilities. A bit. Not enough to remember some of the the important things she was determined she could do on her own. Like keeping the stove going for food. The other family really worked at the lifestyle even when it was frustrating at first. It's a lot of work & their family tried & did well even their young ones. They are a strong family unit. I was kind of hopeful they'd have a baby on the way.

Why should merchants become millionaires when fishermen still had to scrounge for a living? Because of the choices they make. Harsh reality but someone who chooses to take an entry level job at McDonald's can't reasonably expect to become as wealthy as Elon Musk while continuing to work at that entry level job. I think a big difference between their time and ours is they couldn't imagine something better for themselves. Whatever job they found they stayed with that job and didn't think about how to use that as a stepping stone to something greater for themselves. It's just like the fact they mentioned at the beginning about most of them not knowing how to swim yet going out in boats every day. How many people today would take that kind of risk today? So it was reasonable that based on the employment they chose one family was destined to struggle all their lives while another could prosper.
