As a Singaporean living in Singapore at this trying time, let me assure everybody who's watched this very informative video, that we are not yet celebrating our success. Despite all the praises coming from so many quarters, though we are proud of this fact, we are not letting our guards down. As a matter of fact, since the first 2 deaths we experienced, we have redoubled our vigilance as individually and as a nation. We were aware the number of new cases would rise with the returning Singaporeans, permanent residents and those with long stay passes, which was another indication we needed to redouble our vigilance. I think I can speak for the majority of my fellow Singaporeans when I say, we are happy others view us as examples to emulate, but we would be much happier if others are able to practice more of the takeaways they get from Singapore's experience and the experiences of the other countries, like South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, to name a few. I wish everybody the whole world over to be safe, fit and healthy in this trying time we are all going through together.

Honestly, after watching the entire video, I'm even more grateful for whatever the SG government has done till date; and even more thankful for the continuous planning and thinking ahead by the team. I know for a fact that Singaporeans are definitely not celebrating and laying on our laurels just yet. We are ramping up measures everywhere - and when I say everywhere, it is EVERYWHERE from hawker centres, eateries, shopping malls, schools, gyms to any public places really. We have a dedicated task force working on providing daily updates and answering queries that the media has. Our media, yes although tightly controlled, we can safely bet that the information we receive are the most up-to-date and the most accurate. We even are able to subscribe to daily WhatsApp updates by the government. Yes, we are a country that's heavily scrutinised. But I would, in a heartbeat, trade a small portion of my "free-will"/"freedom of speech" for the safety, health and security that we have currently in this time of crisis. So tell me, how do you plan on exercising your "free-will" during this pandemic?

@@josephleighton2458 Not forgetting the oft-mistaken concept of "freedom" too, besides rascism and indifference. I am a Singaporean. Born and bred here. Very often I hear (mainly from the West) that unlike, say USA, Singaporeans do not have freedom. Frankly speaking, I am totally puzzled by that. In all these 60 years of living here, not once have I felt that I am not free to do what I like. Freedom can be a very conceptual thing, having different meaning to different folks. To me, the ordinary man on the street, freedom is simply the ability to move around at any time to anywhere without the fear for my own personal safety. It is the peace of mind that I have in not having to worry that something bad would happen to my family and loved ones, no matter how late they come home at night. It is also the relatively freedom from stress and anxiety in ensuring that I'm able to provide a good standard of living for my family. Some may said we do not have the freedom of speech, which is rather laughable actually. At least to me that is. As far as I know, I have been saying whatever that comes to my mind all these years. And with modern technology and such, I frequently participate in the social media and share my views with other Singaporeans in online forums as often as I like. We are in no way living in fear or anything. No Gestapos come knocking on our doors in the middle of the night like in some bad movies. But of course that doesnt mean we go around saying hurtful and insensitive things about others. That wouldn't be call 'freedom of speech', as far as I am concerned. Its just bad manners and ill breeding that's all. There are some "freedom" that the West advocates so much, which to me we are better off not having them at all. What these are, I'll not go into it here. Suffice to say, so long as we are living comfortably, safely and with no outright restrictions on anything that's really significant to make life miserable, freedom in this small but beautiful country of ours has never been an issue for us.

Yes as a Singaporean, we are really not celebrating, feel like we have conquered the problem or ready to pop the champagne like what this program seems to imply. Most of us are optimistic but staying vigilance, knowing that things can go bad real fast..There are calls for government to lock down now and especially in early days ban all flights(which they did eventually). However our government has chosen the difficult balancing act of keeping the economy going while tackling this serious crisis at the same time. Which I personally feel they are doing a good job so far.

I hope my government learns from this current crisis and takes a page out of your Singaporean book Jayden, that in future that are pro-active, pre-plan, pre-prepare, as a proper responsible authority should be. Hi Jayden, I'm a Singaporean too and share your thoughts. I was recommended to watch this documentary by my family living in Australia, but after watching it I felt very annoyed by certain angles they are trying to imply. Our govt is doing a fantastic job - they are credible, and very humble actually - never taking credit for anything themselves. In fact our Ministers thank the people, and hospital staff. Blady Western media loves to spin on ideologies and nonsense.
@katiekat2921

@@evae.374 As an Australian I seem to have gotten a whole different angle out of it, Eva. I don't see the journalists focussing on ideologies as much as adding commentary on the differences to Australia so we, the Australian audience, gain some comprehension of the background behind your current social and political environment. What I got from this doco was more the focus on having the infrastructure, organisation and education to handle an epidemic situation ready to go for years leading up to the current situation. Being proactive rather than reactive. Having leadership prepared for the most likely problem scenarios and being ready to handle it front on. Was this the wrong take?
@evae.374
4 жыл бұрын
@@katiekat2921 Hi Katie, thank you for explaining your point of view respectfully. What I'm trying to express is that while the documentary does have its merits, there are parts which are very misleading. For example, when they talk about the contact tracing app it is used to help trace the users' whereabouts so that it is easier to track the virus spread - the App has no other hidden purpose, such as stealing our personal data, like what i felt was implied. Even the part where they show all the surveillance cameras and the narrator's voice is very dramatic, it gives viewers the impression that Singaporeans are being watched and controlled by the country. Just to let you know, more cameras were installed and overall security is heightened because of the growing risk of terrorism in the world. Also, the part where they say "this is not a democracy in a western sense, it's been ruled by one party since independence in 1965", is a very misleading statement without any context. It is a democratic society, but still a very young nation with a political scene that is still growing - the people continue to trust in the current leadership (because it's good and trustable), but can definitely elect opposition if they wish.

Imagine the government weld your door shut whilst your parent is collapsing from the virus (true example) and you cannot get help from anyone as you cannot even exit your own house. Police brutality is a common sight in China when dealing with the people too. I think it is right (as a human being) to criticize the way CCP does things. Singapore, on the other hand, is in total opposite to China as many measures and laws are imposed on the citizens to keep the nation safe and orderly as opposed to keeping and exercising the power (which CCP does) they have. I disagree with some of the things Singapore's government does but in the case of handling COVID 19, I think that the government have done superbly.

Compare that to for example to the US with 330mil people and size of 12000x Singapore with thousand of entry points. Yeah size does matter when it come to difficulty of controlling the virus. two fortissimo entry point is not an issue because the moment you lockdown and refuse foreign entires, it will be the same, and if you look at it the other way, Singapore have much lesser manpower to and productivity to fight the virus, US just use the Emergency Production Act to ask GM to produce ventilators, Singapore do not have any factory with the same capability, it is a country with no natural resources, unlike US and China they can build hospitals in a week, mobilizing navy hospitals and all the bells and whistles.

As I'm writing this its' 07/04/2020: We are now in a somewhat "lockdown" called Circuit Breaker (CB). Most places except for essentials are closed and we can only take-away food to eat at home. We are advised to stay at home and only go out if needed. Our government is also helping us financially with various schemes. All schools are closed and most people are "Working From Home (WFH)". Despite all the measures taken by our government there are still people who fail to comply with it and only think of themselves. I can understand that staying at home all day can be boring but it's even better if we can contain the spread and get rid of this situation.

Actually, almost half of the cases in Singapore were due to the negligence of people. Of course, the majority have been very cooperative. But all it takes is a couple bad eggs and you have a community spread underway. I believe 2 of the major clusters in Singapore were from infectees who showed symptoms but did not heed advice to self-quarantine, and went out to events, work and mingled with people! Singapore also had to grasp with imported cases from irresponsible people who KNEW they were sick, showed signs of the virus, and literally boarded flights into Singapore, and checked themselves straight into the NCID quarantine hospital to receive Singapore's healthcare which is pretty world class. They entered the country for the sole purpose to take advantage of our healthcare. Imagine how many people they infected just to come to Singapore to seek treatment. Selfish people are sadly around in both Singapore and outside of it. This resulted in many many people getting infected. And i believe is how the numbers have climbed so fast in recent days.

Excellent and a must-see for public health practitioners and also non-specialists involved in community leadership. As can be seen, Singapore is not a repressive dictatorship. Yes, it is somewhat authoritarian in culture, but that is more to do with Confusion principles than anything else. At its core, it is about a collective choice for mutuality and social responsibility. It may be a false choice to pit freedom against safety, but in balancing the two, the key factor is trust in government. Sadly, the most liberal, progressive and open societies (according to various indices) have not risen to the challenge of preserving the core of these values. As was said in the video, ultimately, it boils down to trust. Singaporeans and other East Asian countries prefer strict but ostensibly fair paternalism to liberal but inconsistent, philandering parents.

It's a good reporting, but I wish that the narrator could stop being ethnocentric in his comments, and stop using the European-American point of view that thinks that democracy is the panacea to everything. I didn't like when he kind of suggested that the only reason Singapore is succeeding in its fight against the virus, is bc the country is a dictatorship, with the same ruling party for years. The U.S for ex. have only 2 parties that have been governing for more than 200 years, and the U.S are more a plutocracy where rich people control everything including the politicians, rather than a democracy. Nobody says anything about that. Singapore might be under the same ruling party forever, might sacrifice the freedom of its people, but it's one of the richest countries in the world. Singaporeans might live under a surveillance state, but they have one of the best health and education systems in the world. The government truly takes care of the people. Can you say the same thing about our so-called democracies? When people get bankrupted in the US for ex. for going to see a doctor, or die at a younger age bc they cannot see the doctor. I would rather trade my freedom, for a better life.
@teerificbitch

Well said dude. In fact, the only thing Singaporeans lack is the smallest bit of freedom of speech. We don't have fake news. And if you publish an article that berates the government with no evidence whatsoever, you will be subject to advertisement revenue penalties for which said articles cannot earn money. That really is not much. Moreover, the country is so broadband penetrated that all its citizens have excess to a plethora of global news. Seriously, why do the West keep talking about freedom of speech as if it is the only aspiration that democracies should have. I too would rather trade such freedom for a better life. One of the world's best education systems, healthcare systems, a meritocratic system that looks at your paper resume instead of your ethnicity or gender, a country with one of the lowest crime rates, so safe you can walk the streets at 3am as a woman and not be afraid of anything, a country with one of the world's highest home ownerships, a country with practically zero homeless people, one of the lowest levels of corruption. As a Singaporean citizen residing in Singapore, I can say that I (and my family and friends) are cautiously hopeful that the various measures implemented by our Government at different times during this pandemic from the time that we had our first case(s) detected are sufficient and appropriate (from a medical perspective as well as from a socio-economic perspective) to accurately measure the extent of the problem, contain the problem and minimize community spread as the situation unfolds in Singapore and as we see the effects in our country from what's happening in other countries, including the many returning Singapore nationals who are coming back from the UK, the rest of Europe and the United States. We are certainly not preparing to "pop any corks" at this time and I remain hopeful and cautiously optimistic that this contagion can be contained if properly managed with decisive action taken to ensure (and enforce) compliance with measures put in place. Everyone has a role in fighting back against this virus outbreak and we have to be responsible for playing our part by following the regulations and directions from the Ministry of Health in Singapore and our leaders. We try to remain calm and not succumb to panic or panic impulses. We are accountable to each other for our actions in these very difficult times. Together, we can prevail.

The most important successful prevention was that Singapore government react banning Chinese people on the very early stage before spreading. That's why this country became one of the most successful countries in the world. The government reacted so quick and wise.
@skychaos87

Yes, Singapore was quick to react. Luckily China is also aggressive and effective with their containment efforts and we only had 200+ cases over the length of two months. Unfortunately Singapore did not react accordingly when the pandemic hit the west. The situation in the west has worsen, people in the west are now more likely to be infected compared to China back then. Turns out there's a second wave hitting all Asia countries due to people returning from the west. Singapore had over 900+ new cases in the last 2 - 3 weeks because of that. And now Singapore have to enhance and upped its measures yet again.

The success of Singapore is mainly because of their own citizen of being responsible and obey to their Gov.'s direction (this is what I observed during my visit in January 2020), besides being just a small country. Singapore and Taiwan should be the example to others.

You are missing out China, which is by far the most aggressive and effective given that the outbreak began there. Also i'd like to add that even Germany had large number of cases infected, their system and testing efforts are actually very function. Its just unfortunate that they are located among countries that are terrible at handling the pandemic thus affecting Germany. South Korea is also very impressive given that they had a crazy ajumma literally causing massive spikes of cases in the thousands and they still manage to contain it. Now most Asian countries are getting hit by the second wave of people coming back from the west, we'll have to see how things evolve now.

You know what's funny? the reason why south korea was handling this well was also thanks to their surveilance and a controlling government, turns out in a crisis like this having an authoritarian government have it's merits. Although this disaster was also caused as a result from an authoritarian government iron grip of their own people too.

The Purple Helicopter don’t be too distressed. We are doing a great job here, but I feel very sorry for those who no longer have a job. You can’t compare Singapore to Australia, we have a huge landmass with multiple entry ports. We are a people from many backgrounds and have freedoms way beyond the people of Singapore. They are a highly educated, very wealthy city state, with a close proximity to China and accustomed to early contamination from China in the past. The people are obedient.......punishable laws against spitting or gum chewing amongst the simple ones. The media is controlled by the government so as not to upset the population. Take care, do not worry unnecessarily, we will all pull through this 🙏🏻

They were less prepared in previous events. This is key because of the measures they decided to put in place after SARS should another event occur in the future. Then matched with a high level of trust toward the government, general respect for authority, general social compliance and obedience; this makes for a near perfect recipe for a hive-mind-like response to deal with this global outbreak.

Thats exactly what i ask people. Here in USA everyone says no need to wear mask unless u r infected but the same time cdc says even if someone who is infected with no symptoms is contagious. So if i was infected, i could pass the virus to someone not knowing. That's why USA is #1 with this virus because they encouraging people not to wear a mask.
