Butuan!! A place full of History. It is believed that the King of Butuan plows gold, not from mining, but from shorelines. That's how rich butuan is before, the entire Philippines to be exact. Spaniards took all the golds away. In fact just as how Magellan describe early Filipinos when he got here, wearing full of jewelry made of golds even the servants wore gold.

The thing you notice most about Filipinos is when you look their way and smile, they will smile back and wave with much more enthusiasm; a thing I never found here in the US. I made a mistake once smiling to a stranger after getting down from a bus. He looked puzzled and said: "Are you crazy? Is anything wrong with me?" I said sorry and went my way.
@ynajones1536

Willie Macawili that's true in most developing countries they don't have that passion of happiness inside,when u smile at them they take is very wrong like u did somthung sinful instead of appreciating it they replied back negative as if u are immortal,once I helped someone from her falling purse that she dropped near the counter inside a super store the woman look.at me so accussingly instead of her just supposedly being thankful she even look at me in very wrong way.they are just so cold not knowing how to be nice and friendly,poor desperate hearts.

Oh Willie grow up. Thousands of expats have found a brutal dead living in the Philippines! Look it up. So you smiled at an American and they called you crazy? Well I think you just might be making such a stupid comment! This guy is flirting with death being and running around on Mindanao island. In time a local will sell his info to the kidnappers there...and he will be crying for ransom money...you can bet on it!

AND WHY NOT? People from different nations come to America/Canada/Australia/United Kingdom to immigrate and most embrace the culture of the host country. Some who have just arrived may say I am becoming an American/ Canadian/ Australian or British because I am learning their language, culture, adopting their principles, accents and behaviours. Much like what you have been doing for a few years there in the Philippines. The difference between you and thousands of those people from second and third world countries going to the first world is obvious. You reversed the situation. It is not unique but quite rare still as people usually migrate from a poor country unto a richer one. You are a Canadian living/working/promoting and initially wanting to become Filipino - well at least we thought!, rather than a Filipino wanting to be Canadian. During your time there is no doubt you have brought great joy and pride to many Filipinos. However, to some who maybe more analytical or cynical, I can’t help beg to ask the question why you have to justify or explain what you mean by becoming Filipino and how really you could never be a Filipino? Another question is why is it acceptable for Filipinos to become American/ Canadian /Australian /British whereas it doesn’t appear to be acceptable (at least from your denial that you will never be a Filipino), for a Canadian to become a Filipino? Why is it that Filipinos living abroad don’t feel the need to prove and say their loyalty to Philippines if they had to obtain a second nationality whereas you feel you do - even though yours was actually only implied? It very much reeks of double standard and implies some shame in the process of turning yourself into Filipino. Many Filipinos on the other hand will be comfortable having two or even three nationalities and proudly call themselves Filipino American or British Filipino. This you can’t fathom to do? Really hard to imagine you becoming a Filipino hence you said you will never be a Filipino? Many of the remarks here say that you appear to be more Filipino than themselves, been to many places than they have been, tasted more pinoy foods than they care to dare, seemed to appreciate the foods, events, hospitality and history than other real Pinoys and yet you will never be a Filipino you said. If you think you will never be a Filipino because you are Caucasian, never lived the life of poverty then that is a lame and wrong reason. Not all Filipinos are poor but equally rich and poor people they are proud to say they are Filipino. There are also darker and whiter Filipinos and they are all comfortable claiming to be Filipino. Another analogy is Black, Brown, Yellow they proudly claim to be American/ Canadian/ Australian/ British so why can’t you never be a Filipino when colour, age, gender, status are irrelevant to citizenship. Why will you never be a Filipino?! If you feel, think and do Filipino then whoever you maybe Black, White, Brown or Yellow then YOU CAN BE A FILIPINO! Well, That's if you really want to :)
