Another method I use is to establish the rhythm first using just the roots, then embellish on the roots (if it fits) and then touch up with fills.

That's another great method David. Thanks for sharing!

this is all probably intuitive for creative people but for technical people like myself it is great thanks

This is maybe one of the most suggestive classes over Bass Guitar. A nice Back to Basic (Musical Instincts). I guess many were waiting since months for it. Greetings!

I know zero about anything, but I know this: to get on ANY drummer's good side, just pick four or five simple notes, played very simply and let the drummer play anything they want. I've been *thanked* for this by a guy playing drums 50 years. might have been my best idea yet. I was trying to emulate Liquid Soul's "World's on a Leash" but I am not Rick Showalter. So what came out was a much simpler version of that idea. He does that James Brown thing a lot: GREAT bass player with a fairly uncomplicated, often repetitive bassline played by an expert.

Nice lesson. Always found using voice the best for me. I like how your lesson also addressed what doesn't work and why.

Great lesson as #1!! Keep it coming, Luke!! Q: You mention “outline the chords.” I’ve heard bass lines that have notes other than the notes of a chord. How is that? Also, playing a rhythm other than the kick drum without clashing with it and the rhythms other instruments are playing.whats a bassist to do ?

Good questions! Let me take them one at a time. In terms of outlining chords, that doesn't mean that you can 'only' use notes in the chord (usually 1, 3 and 5). You can absolutely use other notes. However, the other notes will usually fall on the weaker beats in the bar and they'll carry less 'weight'. By default, that means the strongest beats in the bar will usually line up with the chord tones. These aren't hard rules - there are plenty of exceptions, but it's a good starting point for making functional lines. The same applies to the kick drum/bassline relationship. Sometimes, they'll play the exact same rhythm, but other times they won't, but they'll almost always work together - even if they're playing different rhythms. Think about lines like Another One Bites The Dust. The kick drum on that track is playing on every beat, but the bass line doesn't do that the whole time. It starts with three notes along with the kick drum, but then goes and plays a bunch of other stuff that the kick drum doesn't touch and it still works really well. Now if the kick drum was playing on every beat and your bass line was playing on the 16th note before every beat for the whole song, it probably wouldn't feel very good because there'd be disagreement between the bassline and the kick drum rhythm. Again, these aren't hard rules, but they can give you a place to start from. Just remember - if it sounds good, then it IS good.

Really nice lessons, I wonder how an 8th or quater note pedal on A would sound on this progression  Root of the A chord, fith of the D chord and 3rd of the F chord, maybe even an octave up from where you were starting. When writing Bass lines I usually start from the "mirror the Bassdrum" approach and start noodeling around with filler notes that connect the chords, mostly walking through the Key of the song from root to root at like the last quater note of the chord. What i found really cool is mirroring a fill of the Drums in rythm
