Thank you for a useful video. I've just rented a mini-digger whose 3rd function had not been used for a "long time". in the end we had to dis-assemble the female end of the coupling in order to un-stick the parts that need to slide for the coupling to latch together. the Challenge is to keep all the bits clean, not loose any of the springs / small bits and then check the hydraulic fluid level afterwards to ensure its not become low from what leaks out. Best Wishes, Douglas

Dave, Very helpful! I’m a new grapple owner and I couldn’t attach my hoses yesterday afternoon after letting my grapple sit for a while in the Alabama sun. Watched your video last night, went out this morning (after everything cooled down) and they attached instantly 😊. And, you were absolutely correct that everyone who owns a grapple should watch the Messick video about how misuse can damage hydraulic system. Thanks Dave!

Those valves being a requirement on aerial lifts have been overlooked for far too long in the tractor world! We installed one on our disc mower to prevent driving down the road and all of a sudden your hitting mail boxes lol. HA like dad says wrap it before you tap it don't just slap it ... Our small older tractor has a Valve body the loader controls work from you can shut the tractor off relieve pressure and disconnect the lines, But it will slowly allow the fluid to change place in the cylinders so you have to tap the lines to reconnect. Awesome video and a good subject for sure lines will just not connect if under any pressure.

Hey Dave, great video. Those dual pilot check valves sound interesting. Me, I don't have a grapple, but I do with the backhoe what you mentioned at the end: about leaving it in neutral position when taking it off the tractor. Like I try to position the dipper stick and bucket in a way that when I remove the pins and tilt the boom back to unhook backhoe from the tractor, the dipper will be in vertical position, so it wouldn't want to sag in either direction (which would build up pressure in the lines). Also if I'm gonna have the backhoe off for a long time, I stick a big wood block underneath it between the stabilizer legs and sit it down, so that the legs aren't taking the brunt of holding it up. So far that works for me.

Those valves your talking about there are common in excavators where I live. (NZ) the idea behind them is that if you get a sudden drop in pressure like a busted line or what have you. The boom or main arm won't suddenly drop. Safety first

The easiest way to avoid doing this is when you detach the grab is to open it, then stop the tractor,then operate the lever to close the grab by gravity, that way you have emptied most of the oil from the rams so heat and cold don’t really have any effect. That’s how I do it with very few problems.
@daveknowshow
8 ай бұрын
Mine don’t close under gravity it has a double piloted check valve to holds the unit in place. This helps protect the hydraulic system from pressure spikes during certain operations.

Excellent tips in he vidro, Dave. I had this happen once on my grapple and twice on my GC1710 subcompact front end Loader lines. I had to depress the nipple on the male hydraulic line after wrapping the coupler with a rag and then depressing the nipple using channel lock pliers. As soon as I applied pressure on the nipple ball bearing plunger, the line pressure was relieved immrdiately. Of course, the rag prevented hydraulic oil from shooting all over the place. Thanks for the video, Dave. Take it easy. Full-watch 👍🏽🙂.

Thanks for all the info! I wanna ask you a question related, when I shut down my tractor I always lower any implements to relieve pressure and jiggle the levers and third function buttons also. Is that ok to do? Thanks, I’m pretty new to this stuff.
@daveknowshow
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely its beneficial to relieve the pressure off the system. when we leave pressure in our lines and systems the sun can heat the hydraulics up further raising the pressure and cause additional problems. problems such as: blow by at the hydraulic cylinders, blow by at the hydraulic spool valves and so on. this can in turn create wear and premature failure of those components. thank you for an awesome question I may even make a video about this.

Hi Dave. Did you install locking valves on your three point hydraulic top and tilt cylinders?
@daveknowshow
4 жыл бұрын
yes it does have locking valves on both. I ended up replacing my top link that I got from agri supply and I may do a video about that soon. I bought one from brooksagparts.com that has a locking valve on it. the tilt cylinder I built myself has the same locking valve as the grapple but its located on the tractor. this makes hydraulic line hook up difficult at times however I only have to hook it up when I removed it to install the back hoe. it would be better with a locking valve mounted on the hydraulic tilt cylinder like most of them are. the money I saved building my own was sort of a waste. wish I would have had one built by someone who does this on a regular basis. the issue was the fitting. the locking valve that fits on the cylinder has a British standard parallel pipe thread the cylinder commonly found here is a national pipe thread that is tapered. the double piloted locking valve that fits the cylinder has a British standard parallel pipe thread with O-Ring seal. I bought the locking valve and a tap to try and re-thread my cylinder to the British thread arrangement. so far been to chicken to try it. lol ha ha I may attempt it one day or have one custom built by one of the guys that do these on a regular. not all cylinders are created equally. the ram in some are merely chrome plated and the rust quick. my agri supply top link rusted in less than six months. the one from brooks had a built on locking valve was only a few dollars more and the ram is made of Chromoly which resist rust much better than chrome plated steel. well worth the couple dollars more. plus included the locking valve.

Hi Dave. Thanks for repliying. After seeing your video on the locking valve install for your grapple,i installed one for my homemade bucket ,add a grapple.When useing the grapple i no longer need to continuely cycle pressure to hold the load. The valve i used is relatively small only 2 snd one quarter by 3 and one half by 1 inch thick. It only has a flow rating of 5 gph. Even useing size 4 hyd lines from rear remotes to the front of my l3800 the grapple works well. I want to install one on a hydraulic top link cylinder. The valve was purchased here in Canada at Princess Auto for 79 dollars. It also uses o ring style fittings but are redaly available. Looking forward to all your videos so be well.
I have no idea if this would work or not, but wouldn't storing the grapple with the male and female connectors hooked to each other allow the hydraulic fluid to circulate freely, neutralizing the pressure on the cylinder? At least until the sun heats up the hoses? I still haven't hooked up the third function on my tractor yet, so I'm just guessing. If that wouldn't work; please explain why not.
@daveknowshow
4 жыл бұрын
thats a good suggestion. not sure if it would work or not. I would imagine the lid would tend to close since fluid could freely travel or open if put in that position. I know it wont affect mine because of the double pilot locking valve which requires a minimal amount of pressure to unlock the valve to allow flow. I will suggest that to some folks and see what they find out. of course a lot of grapples come with two male connector on the end not a male and female like mine has. so an adapter would need to be made or set it up like mine.
@MrTks1959
4 жыл бұрын
@@daveknowshow I thought about it after I wrote that and realized that it doesn't solve the issue pressure build up due to heat. And I'm guessing that the only option at that point would be to loosen the threads, which you don't recommend. I like your double pilot locking valve idea.

Great video, Dave! I loved the idea of rotating the grapple over and will add that tip to my toolbox. I follow Neil Messick and had seen his video on grapple use and was impressed and now take extra care with my grapple. My loader was parked over the winter and was fighting me come spring to reinstall requiring me to tap the connector plunger. Here is a link to Ken's hyd tools should you get to the point of having to bleed off hyd fluid manually. www.boltonhooks.com/hydraulic-tools/ Love your channel! Stay well!
