Try strumming a little softer with smaller up and downs so you can keep your palm on the bridge. You'll be using much more wrist than forearm. Think it will help. Good luck!

It's only harder because of muting strings, if you don't mind sounding exactly like the song the main riff is easier

Just a tip for everyone having trouble with the muting, I recommend raising the action(string height) high action makes muting much easier. Frusciante himself uses high action.

Yes and high action is easier for bending in my opinion because when your action is low the strings goes under your finger and it sounds awful

I’ve been practicing this for a couple of weeks and the breakthrough on the muting for me was raising the index finger of the A string when you fret the G. If the A string is still droning it kills the clean feel. I also found playing it louder helps to overcome the sound of the clicking from the muted strings. I found using the pinky wasn’t easy but definitely helps with the muting because the middle finger can lay across the higher strings, but isn’t 100% needed. Less is more in terms of ringing notes and repetition is key to getting it down pat. 🎸🌶

Actually, if you listen closely to what he is saying in the video, he tells you everything that you found out on your own except the playing loud part. Playing loud striking all the strings with confidence does help progress.

This single note with muted rhythm technique is (or at least used to be) called skank. The best description and tutorial I have seen to help build up rhe skill level is in part 2 of Ross Bolton's funk rhythm guitar video from the 90's. It's on youtube.

I think I must be one of the few people who actually found it easier to play the verses with my thumb. It wasn’t easy at first but after while it actually became more natural to me than to use my main fingers. Either way it’s a fun song to play.

Bruh Ksns oh i forgot to add jimi Hendrix to the list.... Haha it’s really fun too see when people just judge without any bases... It’s the muting technique that used by Hendrix and John..... kind of their uniqueness.... that I was talking about... also the g chord and all other that he played... just like John Mayer and Hendrix plays... So this song is kind of beginners stuffs to get into that territory....

8:29 the absolute single most crucial part of the song and also the hardest. The best way to practice is to just repeat playing the open string then muting it then playing then muting. Crucial. All smooth sailing after this

Your amazing, I've been playing that song for a long time now and I've been doing it wrong obviously, lol. I can hear the difference, during the chorus and pre chorus I've done it differently and I can see why it doesnt sound exact, plus I use a Ibanez with a flat radius which gives me a challenge

I’m trying to learn this now and I couldn’t do the muting how he was doing it so I changed it a little to basically use my pointer finger to mute all the 6th fret strings and then just play the rest of the notes like normal with the other 3 fingers. The only weird part is the open 4th string bar. Hope this can help someone!

its actually called muting- hendrix's muting technique. raking is different i think

Raking is when you hear each individual note but played in a sweeping action of the picking hand. Like a strum action but pick out the individual notes of each string.
