Good advice. As an expansion of the idea "Write as if your parents were dead" I'd say "write like you have no friends". Or maybe your only friend is a volleyball. Basically, write for yourself, not others. My first real big story (over 400 pages when finished) that I did in a fanzine, years ago, was influenced too much by friends that had good ideas. I was a bit too receptive and open minded; the ideas weren't entirely bad but to me they ended up being rabbit holes that I had to accommodate. The story would be much tighter if I had not allowed myself to get distracted by these well-meaning but ultimately fruitless suggestions.

Or maybe write as if everybody else in the world is dead. Or this idea freaked you then think that you are the last person on the planet. By the way, i love the way you laugh. Cheers

I'm in the middle of NaNoWriMo right now and am finally realizing that I do need to write for myself. There are a couple of scenes that might feel kind of awkward to know my parents/grandparents are reading once the book is done, but they're parts of the story, and the story is worth telling. This is a nice mid-NaNo pick-me-up :) Thanks!

The advice is great, the dead parents part made me giggle however morbid it may sound, but it really is as you said. If we don't feel comfortable to be a bit extra and out of the box because of the image we'll convey to the eyes of others, then we'll be consumed by our own obstacles and tabus when writting or drawing. This page came out really awesome, by the way ;)

I gotta say, that’s some of the best writing/creative advice I’ve heard in a long time. I really loved that you mention to not apologize for the work/message you want to put out there-that’s actually been on my heart and mind a lot even before I saw this video. Your second point to “write as if your parents were dead” gave me a good chuckle, but even more so was something that really holds a lot of weight for me. I am an artist who draws both cute children’s book illustrations as well as sci-fi grunge, and it’s always a nagging concern in the back of my mind that I may garner a raised eyebrow from parents and inlaws who enjoy my children’s book artwork, but do not necessarily relate to every piece of art I put out. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter (nor is it accurate) what I think others may think, as long as I do it for the Lord and enjoy my gift of creating, knowing that he’ll use it however he deems right.

Hmmmm... Very interesting points. Especially those where you worry about what others would think, don't write the story with the burden of what your parents would think, and not wasting too much of your time with side projects or too much social media presence. But... For the last point... heh... what if your main / first story you really want to do, might take 20 tomes to be told lol xD
@makonekoart
5 жыл бұрын
Maybe cut those 20 tomes into manageable chunks. I doubt that it's one story that takes 20 books to tell, but a bunch of smaller stories that weave together to form an overarching narrative. So take each puzzle piece and start writing.

I spent so much time improving my drawing skills that I neglected my writing skills. Now, I can draw decently, but I don't know much about storytelling... the learning process is never ending... By the way, do you still use your Pentel brush to ink Phobos? Or is it entirely digital?

I agree that a story is going to have a political slant depending on the writer, but it becomes propaganda if the writer can't give the opposing sides argument without creating a straw man.
@CoffeeTableComics

Yucky Gum Comix Yeah, I do see that all the time. But I also don’t think every story needs to explain both sides. It’s more about sharing the authors unique opinion on a subject. I don’t expect Miyazaki to explain anything except for his worldview. But yeah, I hear what you are saying about politics. It seems like it’s unavoidable with anyone talking politics theses days. Haha

Well, my brother is writing a book that I'm illustrating and our parents are dead...there are some cringeworthy scenes in his stories, but I don't think my parents would have disapproved of it, they were always proud of whatever we did. Now the church crowd might not understand what we're trying to convey, they tend to focus on the negative things in the story that we are denouncing...they focus on the fact that it's in the book, and not on the overall message that we're arguing against such bad things. At least that's been our experience. So in this situation would you advise to do it as if we don't care if they approve or not?
@CoffeeTableComics
5 жыл бұрын
Pete Marquez Yeah. If you really believe the message in your story and think it needs to be addressed. Otherwise you are just dumbing it down for a crowd that is probably going to hate it anyway.

Sutisuk Vudtiyanon well I'm planning to use a lot of shadows and cut-away's from showing the actual questionable or heinous acts, thus at least attempting to avoid "gratuitous," but the impression of what is transpiring will remain... Some it I questioned myself, after my brother explained the reasoning and importance of said elements to the story then we agreed to add captions that help better explain instead of leaving it up to the reader to interpret. That's worked out so far for us and has helped make the overall story better. If I have unanswered questions or confusion after reading through the script, then readers could also potentially have the same questions as I did. In this sense our collaboration has helped to improve what we are creating.
@CoffeeTableComics

Pete Marquez Yeah, I’m not suggesting to be explicit or anything. There are always ways to say anything you want in a way that is not glorifying it. You are right that you can always say stuff in captions instead of showing every detail. You can creatively let your audience know what’s happening without showing the details too.

Bob Usualis I’m seriously trying to understand why it’s so important that I pick a side between two groups that hate each other. I’m all for people doing their own thing, more than what a company tells them to say, but that doesn’t mean that I need to just jump into another group that I don’t really approve of either. I’m going start a third group called the comicsfence where me and my friends can sit and watch. Haha.
