Hey JillianEve! I was the person you purchased this from (and finally had 5 minutes to see what happened with your conversion) and have to say I couldn't be more proud of that little bit of yarn she made! I thought she'd forever just be pretty. Also, thank you for finding region she was intended to imitate, I hope to look into it more myself now.

Yesterday I went to check out a wheel for sale from someone on Craigslist. Thank you for this series. It turned out to be a spinning wheel shaped object. First give away.... no orifice of any kind. Thank you for saving me $375 dollars. :)

My wheel (Moswolt) has no lining either. It's wood on wood. I have put a portion unwashed wool by the treddle. Looks stupid but no more squicking. I'm happy that this s.w.s.o. is now a real wheel!

I've taught felting classes before and it was so much fun. We had water everywhere and I basically spend the whole class walking around with a mop while I checked on everyone's progress. Everyone had a beautiful scarf when they were finished though! What is really fun is to needle felt highly textured hand spun onto a wet felted scarf!

Oh my gosh, where is the oil? AHHHHHHHH!!! I want to believe you did oil it, but this is KZitem so if I didn't see it, I don't know!?!!?! Help! More seriously, I also bought a spinning wheel object that was a lamp, but its a beautiful thing! it looks a lot like a Kromski Minstrel! But.... I couldnt go through with trying to drill holes in the flyer - which was also missing a true orifice, so I bought a second-hand Ashford mother-of-all and attached it, and its a nice wheel - and lots of bobbins! But, then I bought a wooliewinder for my main wheel and haven't looked back. Its pretty though! So pretty.

Yay for technically being able to spin some yarn with Spinoccico. Bummer that it didn't work very well. Probably not worth the effort, but could weights be added to the outer edge of the drive wheel, some how, to help with momentum? Maybe bore out the hole in the hub to add a metal tube in there to work as a bearing for the crank shaft? Possibly smooth/sand down all the points making contact with the orifice and tension band and oil very well? Maybe smooth and oil well for all the connection points even down to the treadle? I've seen some wheels with a leather flyer orifice bearings that need to be well oiled and don't work well if they are dried out. Just some inexperienced spinner ideas; don't feel pressured to keep fiddling with it to make it go.

Yes, these are all ideas Mark and I talked about. I think weighting the rim of the wheel and adding some kind of bearing for it would have the biggest impact in terms of spinning ability. 💕

Maybe use a sliver of a bar of soap to help the friction of the metal and wood. Try adding some vehicle wheel weights to your wheel.

It works - kinda. It was fun watching your videos on your find and getting it to work. It was interesting hearing you talk about felting slippers. I finished my first felted knit slippers yesterday. I have been watching all kinds of KZitem videos on making them with just fiber the past couple of days. It would be fun to have a slipper felt along.

@@tracyirwin103 I watched 2 videos yesterday on "Feral Forest - Alaska". She just sticks it on her foot and keeps massage felting to form it to fit. I did see another video of someone that used a duct tape foot, but she didn't show how she made it. She just said she put plastic bags in a sock and ducked taped it to form a foot.

Spinochio...I love it 🤣🤣🤣 This video was a nice experiment, but you've inadvertently made yet another perfect gem of information for me on my journey to make my own wheel. I'm getting a better idea of how to make my tension. I have a question about the wheel, as you mentioned that this one felt too light. I love old machines that use flywheels, I have a 1910 singer treadle sewing machine. It has a small wheel, but the darn thing is cast iron, so its gonna have some weight to it and that gives it all the momentum it needs. So how about your Ashford traditional wheels? They look robust (which is the design that I'm inspired to base my own wheel upon) but how heavy are they? Also, is there an official set size of how big wheels are historically made? Or are they simply made, then the ratio is determined afterwards? I'd rather have a proper tension ratio in mind and attempt to make the wheel based on that math, rather than make the wheel and figure out the math later. Problem is...I dont know the math haha!
@JillianEve

Check out what is referred to as "Indian head" spinning wheels. They use the wheel and table from the old singers for yarn spinning. There is some fascinating history behind those wheels and sometimes you can find them for sale, especially in the Pacific North West, USA and Western Canada. Also, did you see my ratio video? Wheels have different ratios and you can see that on the wheel specifications listed by the manufacturers. That should give you some ideas! One think to keep in mind though is that when you are spinning, it is important to easily stop the drive wheel if you need to fix something in your yarn or drafting. Happy wheel making!

@@JillianEve Aye, I saw your ratio video, twas also helpful. Unfortunately, manufacturers telling me their ratios doesnt help my math. I need to know the diameters of the wheel and (...bobbin? Still not up on all the names yet, but I'm learning watching your amazing videos! 😍) If I knew how big the wheel and other part was to get a certain ratio, well, that's pretty much all I'd need haha!

@@JillianEve Ah yes! I've actually seen a video of the indian head recently. Tis a very good option. Unfortunately, I'm a "all in or nothing" kinda guy. If imma spin, its gonna be on a real wheel. My sewing machine needs to stay in tact, and spinning wheel must be it's own separate machine heehee :p Unfortunately, I dont know how to use my sewing machine yet. I haven't found out how to string it up or adjust the settings yet >_

Hi Stacy! I am getting caught up on comments. I hope you were able to get it all fixed and are spinning up beautiful yarn by now! If not, let me know how I can help. You might need to adjust the supports on the drive wheel to align the wheel with the whorl better. Sometimes that causes a drive band to jump off. ❤
