Hi from southern New Zealand. The Tonga eruption was an astonishingly powerful event, don't forget there's now a 750 meter deep hole where there used to be a small island so it pumped a lot of material into the stratosphere so yes, I'd agree that eruption is having an effect on global weather
@davidarundel6187

Tonga is in the southern hemisphere, so shouldn't have much impact on Iceland . There have been enough volcanoes erupting in the northern hemisphere , which would have a greater impact . Did you catch the spectacular aroura borealis a couple of weeks or so back ? The sky over wellington was a beautiful shade of magenta .

@@davidarundel6187 I take it then you haven't heard of the Tambora eruption in the 1800s that caused the year without summer. Tambora is in the southern hemisphere and it was the northern hemisphere that recorded the year without summer. Volcanic eruptions of the magnitude of Tonga can and do have an effect on both hemispheres. Tonga pumped vast quantities of water vapour into the normally dry stratosphere increasing its water vapour load significantly. Water vapour in the stratosphere is a massive driver of global climate. Fortunately, the eruption was oceanic so sulphur dioxide loading was reduced significantly otherwise it would have really hit the fan. To see the effects of that look at the historical effects of Krakatoa and Pinatubo, both southern hemisphere volcanoes that effected northern hemisphere climate. The reverse is also true. Large Icelandic eruptions can impact the southern hemisphere with sulphur dioxide loading. The laki eruption in the 1700s effected new Zealand weather significantly. We have long twilight's down south so no, I haven't noticed any aurora australis this summer although it might have been visible from Wellington because you're 1000 km north of me. Hope you enjoyed the show

Iceland has the best of Earth phenomenon ! A little bit of everything...volcanoes, glaciers, auroras, glitter clouds...and I think there is a season for noctilucent clouds as well...different from the Glitter Clouds. I checked SpaceWeather, and Dr. Phillips shows the noctilucent cloud season has started in the Antarctic, so yours must be in the summer months. Have you seen noctilucent clouds in the your sky? As always...best regards and travel safely...🤗

@@JustIcelandic Noctilucent clouds form at the edge of the atmosphere in space. They are formed when ice crystals from the atmosphere condense onto dust particles from meteors so in very cold conditions. They are affected by the solar wind moving by the earth...the waves in the clouds are formed by the solar wind. I think the northern season for noctilucent clouds is coming to an end. As the earth "tilts" back toward the sun and the Spring and Summer seasons return the upper atmosphere warms just enough to affect the formation of the n. clouds. They are most visible a few hours after sunset or before sunrise. I have only seen them once...a truly rare event since I live in FLA (USA). They are usually seen in the upper latitudes.🤗

I live in New Zealand and heard the boom when the Hunga Tonga Volcano blew. I was sitting on my back porch after work drinking a beer and talking to my mate on the phone. Next thing I heard a noise that sort of sounded like a dumpster lid being slammed shut several times very rapidly. Later I looked at our local weather website to check the weather, and realised that it was the volcanic pressure wave that had passed over at the exact time I heard this noise.

They are not only indicators of weather events, but they are also quite beautiful. I remember when Pinatubo erupted in 1991. We had deep Red cloudless sunsets for many days where I lived, on the Tropic of Capricorn East coast Australia. The dispersing high-altitude dust cloud made for some brilliant photography opportunities at sunset.

Hunga Tonga Ha’apai only greatly affected Australia. I believe that this is caused by a weird La Niña current and a low air pressure funneling an atmospheric river through the USA. Also including a weak northern polar vortex mixing cold Canadian air with warm Atlantic air. Lots of weirdness going on in the skies of the northern hemisphere

I see this footage is over a week old. Here in my location near the west coast of southern Norway, we have had had only fully overcast since the 19 th of January, over 10 days, so very little to see in the sky. Except for Thursday afternoon, the 26th some hours clear. Then we we had a fantastic colorful sky to the southwest after the 🌞 had set. Quite similar colours to what you had there, but with a fantastic ORANGE colour. Can't remember to see so much orange and so clear and strong for about an hour ! I wondered where it came from, some polluting dust from the UK or from farther off 🤔 ? That midnight, an asteroid smaller than 10 m was to pass by the Earth at 3600 km height over South America and south Pacific. Could that have brought the dust ? I don't know, could be another explanation, maybe related to what you had there ?

i think geologyhub said that the honga tonga eruption didnt erupt that many gases and it was mainly water vapour due to a smaller eruption that allowed the see into the magma chamber which made it go boom and the crator is now some 800mtrs deep and increased in size and will continue to erupt under sea until it gets above sea level again and rebuilds the island (there is a chance of another big eruption if the sea gets into the chamber again but its only a small chance) at which point the place may go boom again. your ancestors may have a point about the clouds as it maybe like the saying we have in the uk "red sky at night sailors delight , red sky in the morning sailors warning" the sailor can be swapped out for shepperd depending on where you live in the uk and basically means the sun is showing dust and water in the atmosphere if it shows up at night it will pass over during the night or has gone and in the morning it shows what is coming (or something like that) so im guessing that when the sky is showing those clouds in jan (when the sun starts coming back) it is lighting up ice crystals in the atmosphere. and as iceland has a lot of fishermen they will have noted this over generations and basically put 2 and 2 together and got 4 more often than not , while it isnt 100% accurate it is more than likely true to a certain extent and something they felt was important enough to be passed down the generations and not to be ignored , there are often grains of truth in old wives tails ok not all of them but enough to take notice of.

This is indeed a fine topic 😊 it came as a surprise to hear this thing about Tonga aftermath uðp here, , those clouds are not so unusual at all so it's hard to blame them alone on Tonga, however many where speculating if the the odd sunrises lately in south Iceland were related to Tonga water weapon, and it was not the people with tin foil hats 😊 i haven't been there recently but I can however say that the winter colours now are odd, but I will be on the lookout for more inso, and I processing more images of those cloud formations, time lapse actually, and greetings from Iceland and thanks for the information.

More likely it's winter that's responsible, or that icy wind from Greenland. Rainbows formed from ice crystals instead of liquid water droplets have this look to them. Usually the angle of the sun (or moon!) plus the orientation of the ice crystals has to be just right to see the colors.

I speculated last year that the eruption may be favourable for polar stratospheric clouds to form, due to the huge amount of H2O ejected into the stratosphere. This, in all honesty, probably had nothing to do with the volcano. From what I can tell, polar stratospheric cloud instances haven't been so high this winter...

These clouds appear when it is extremely cold in the upper statosphere (12-15 km altitude). That layer is very dry, so clouds are rare in that altitude. It might be more frequent nowadays because of global warming. Carbondioxide captures the heat from the earth at lower altitude, preventing it to hit the upper atmosphere at normal speed. Thus, this layer gets colder more frequently.
